Tottenham Hotspur retain an interest in signing Nikola Milenkovic ahead of the January transfer window…
What’s the word?
That’s according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, who claim Spurs manager Antonio Conte is an admirer of the Fiorentina colossus, though they will face competition from the likes of West Ham United, Manchester United and Juventus.
Valued at £18m by CIES Football Observatory, the Serbia international is a target for the north Londoners this winter, with his current contract set to expire in 18 months time.
It remains to be seen how much a move for Milenkovic would cost.
Conte’s dream defender
The Viola colossus has all the attributes to be a perfect signing under Conte and if sporting director Fabio Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy can seal his signature, then they could well form a frightening duo in north London.
Spurs could well be in need of additional centre-backs, too, with Cristian Romero facing a pretty long stint on the sideline. There won’t be many better options out there this winter than Milenkovic, and he could well be an ideal option alongside the Argentine in the future, particularly under Conte.
Milenkovic ranks inside Fiorentina’s top six players and is arguably one of their best on the ball, averaging a passing accuracy of 90.8% – the second-best of any player to start ten or more league games.
This would suggest that he’s more than capable of being a reliable ball-playing option in defence for Conte. Furthermore, he offers a ruthless edge, also averaging 1.9 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game, via WhoScored.
Once likened to Premier League great Nemanja Vidic, the Serbian should have no trouble in adapting to the English top-flight, especially if he turns out to be half the player of the ex-United powerhouse.
“Milenkovic is better than Vidic with the ball at his feet, and he is much calmer on the field,” Mozzart journalist Dejan Stankovic told ESPN in 2018. “He is the most talented centre-back Serbia have had since Vidic, and they definitely have one thing in common – [they are] both are fearless.”
Meanwhile, he has also been dubbed a “beast” by former Partizan head coach Ivan Tomic.
On the above evidence, Conte would surely love to seal a move for Milenkovic. He had the best defence in Serie A with Inter Milan last season, on their way to the league title, and the Fiorentina star has all the skills to be a perfect fit in his Italian-based system over in N17.
Conte and Milenkovic would be a frightening prospect heading into the remainder of the campaign.

West Indies refused to let Australia run away with the first Test, but the hosts have the stronger position after a bright opening to the contest

West Indies refused to let Australia run away with the first Test, but the hosts have the stronger position after a bright opening to the contest. The local batsmen, the ones whose first-innings lapses cost the side in England, failed to convert a series of promising starts, with four of them departing between 41 and 92 as they went to stumps at 5 for 322.Those lapses may not prove costly but the pattern exposed the Test rust of a group that has been heavily focussed on limited-overs engagements recently. Simon Katich, who was able to warm up with a couple of games in the Sheffield Shield, was the most composed as he almost reached three figures, but Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey fell when set and Michael Clarke’s international comeback from a lengthy back injury ended in a one-day style slash that was snapped up by a lunging Chris Gayle at first slip. While West Indies appeared to be out of touch on a couple of occasions, they kept fighting back with energetic bowling and some local generosity on an excellent surface at the Gabba. Dwayne Bravo removed Clarke (41) and also picked up Katich in his 2 for 66 while Jerome Taylor, who gained a sore hip, and Kemar Roach were also tricky at times. The tourists must remember this ground has staged many first days like this, where the hosts seem in range before racing away on the second morning.Marcus North and Brad Haddin (9) have the task of driving their side forward after surviving through the afternoon shadows. Like Katich, North has spent a lot of time with his first-class side already this season and he did not allow any openings as he finished with 42.Katich and Ponting made sure the loss of Shane Watson – he starred with the one-day team in India – before the team had scored was forgotten quickly during a settling stand of 126. Everything was happening so easily that the field was spreading and the shoulders of the tourists were beginning to sag. The exits of Ponting and Katich in the middle session kept the mind of Chris Gayle, the jet-lagged captain, busy as he plotted against the Australians. As the pitch offered the bowlers some help in the first half of the day, Katich was able to switch between defence and attack as easily as the wind changes and the increase in tempo was always a shock. He started cautiously before breaking free with a hook and a handful of firm cuts and then wound down again. The next time he changed pace he launched into action against the debutant Ravi Rampaul, driving through cover for four and pulling him for six in consecutive balls. Another lull followed. He was accelerating again, hitting strongly through cover, shortly before his dismissal and had a reprieve on 81 when Sulieman Benn missed a take above his head. Bravo was the unlucky bowler but didn’t have to wait for long for his reward, with Katich frustrated to glance to Denesh Ramdin just before tea. There were 13 fours and a six in Katich’s 92 and he left the field with his side in reasonable shape at 3 for 200.Ponting was troubled a couple of times by deliveries coming back into him but was able to ease to a half-century, which came with a hooked six over fine-leg in the over before lunch. After the break Ponting was again worried by a ball darting in and Roach was unlucky to miss out on a leg-before decision. Two runs later Ponting tried to defend and edged behind for 55.Hussey entered and was immediately uncomfortable, playing, missing and squirting thick edges between the slips and gully for a couple of boundaries. His mood changed when Gayle stirred and came on for an over to allow boundaries to point and cover. Hussey joined the list of those to falter when in control and gave Benn a wicket with a caught-and-bowled on 66. Another strong start had been given up.The persistence of the visitors was admirable as they moulded the experience of Taylor and Bravo with the youth of Roach and Rampaul. Taylor and Roach caused batches of trouble while Rampaul was off the pace as he gave up more than five an over during a nervy entry.West Indies’ day started badly when Ramnaresh Sarwan, the No. 3, was ruled out with a back injury, but they were lifted in the third over as Watson was lbw not offering a shot to Taylor. By stumps their position was bearable and their future in the game depends on how their fast men back up in the morning.

Past the halfway point of 2021-22, Premier League finds Manchester City as the retainers of the Premier League titles.
However, several contenders could make a return, albeit a rocky start of the season. We will show you top-ranking teams’ odds to either retain or win the Premier League title.
Manchester City: Premier League Title Favourites
They were seen as favourites to keep the title even before the season kick-off. Manchester City seems to prove the predictions.
Given the strong start of the 2021-22 campaign and odds that evolved from 8/15 to 2/17 recently, with a 1/18 maximum, Pep Guardiola’s side remains at the top of the table.
Manchester City advanced ten points ahead of the main contestants, most recently following a 2-1 win against Arsenal. Rodri, one of the many team’s that are top FIFA performers of this season, scored the winner for Man City.
A win against Swindon Town seems to be a given. Still, the January 15 match against Chelsea may slightly affect its position. However, a 10-point advance and 95% probability of keeping the Premier League title is hard to topple.
The Main Contenders: Chelsea & Liverpool
With 12 wins out of 21 played matches, Chelsea may rival the 17 wins out of 21 matches feat of Man City.
Tuchel’s side, nonetheless, will have a hard time getting out of its string of constantly drawn matches, such as the most recent 2-2 result against Liverpool.
Is Liverpool the Main Contender?
This is also why some analysts place Liverpool as the second favourite, based on some bookie margins. And there is some truth to it.
The Reds have a better win percentage, with 12 out of 20. Additionally, both the objective number of goals and the goal difference are better than Chelsea’s, closer to Man City.
The most recent bookie odds place Liverpool at values ranging from 59/5 to 25/2, with the best choice being 61/5. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s odds are currently on the shift, with no consensus.
However, considering the point system of the Premier League title ranking, the Reds still lag behind Chelsea. But not by much.
Our educated guess is that the apparent instability between these two teams is rife with opportunities as far as betting is concerned. The Chelsea-Manchester City match will clarify it. While not resulting in the dethroning of the Premier League title favourites, a win or even a draw could put some distance between Chelsea and Liverpool.
The Rest of the Table
The official rankings show Arsenal, West Ham, the Spurs, and Manchester United to the remaining runners-up.
Other teams are sitting at under 30 points, or well over 20 points under the Premier League title favourites.
Bookie predictions also agree with the rankings, except for the presence of West Ham.
Manchester United
Manchester United disappointed many fans this season, especially given several high profile transfers, such as Jadon Sacho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, following 19 matches, the team only accrued 31 points, and it seems to be in freefall.
Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur
The Spurs remain bookie favourites in matters of the regional rivalry with the Cannons, despite the former lagging behind the latter in the ranking ladder by two points.
We are hardly talking about Premier League title contestants. Still, as far as butting heads in the regional scene, the story is not clear-cut regarding Arsenal and Tottenham.
The Spurs can still challenge the Cannons for the fourth place, as the team is on the upswing. The wins to matches played ratios of the two clubs in this season are almost identical, with Tottenham Hotspur coming slightly on top. This trend is bound to continue, given the fewer games played by the team and Arsenal’s recent defeat against Manchester City.
However, just as for Chelsea, the draws the Sours faced hurt their rankings, compared to Arsenal that only saw a loss following a string of wins.
All things being said, the January 16 match between the two will clarify the rankings. A draw would not cut it for the Spurs, while the aggressive Arsenal playstyle may dish them the second notable defeat this season.
Final Predictions for the Premier League Title
Manchester City is bound to keep the title with no viable contestant. Neither Chelsea nor Liverpool have the time to close in the 10-point distance in half a season.
As for the second place in the Premier League title ranking, Chelsea will probably miss the mark and lose it to the Reds.
Arsenal does not have a steady enough hold on the fourth place. Tottenham Hotspur will advance in rank and will be a considerable challenge for the Cannons, judging by bookie odds.
West Ham United is another hurdle for the Spurs, as it still scores one point over the team. It has a better goal difference with similar other results. Nonetheless, West Ham failed to challenge Arsenal for advancing in the Premier League title ranking.
A final (potential) prediction for the Premier League title table would be:
Manchester City – the Premier League Title Winner Liverpool – the possible runner up in the future Chelsea – sent to third place if it fails to perform against Man City Arsenal – keeps its place only if it manages to beat the Spurs or ends with a draw Tottenham Hotspur – in case its advance stops with the Arsenal match West Ham United – it will probably be surpassed by the Spurs Manchester United – it can hardly recover from the season’s start Brighton and Hove Albion – it should manage to win against Crystal Palace Wolverhampton Wanderers – it may also maintain its 8th place if it performs well Leicester City or Crystal Palace – Leicester is falling in rank, while Crystal Palace has an opportunity to advance.
Is Manchester City guaranteed to win the Premier League title? No, but the team is the undisputed favourite of the 2021-22 season. No team has enough time nor a good enough performance to be a challenger. However, nothing is guaranteed, and the rankings, as well as bookie odds, are set to change in the future.

Peter Siddle must get through Wednesday’s FR Cup match against New South Wales to play in Saturday’s opening Test against Pakistan. Siddle missed the final West Indies game in Perth with a nagging hamstring complaint but has been picked in the Boxing Day squad. However, his last hurdle before the MCG is a 50-over game at the SCG as the defending champions aim to shift from fourth place. “The funny thing was I was actually better before the Perth Test than I was in Adelaide, so it’s not as big a deal as everyone thinks,” Siddle said in Melbourne.”I’ve had a couple of bowls the past two days and I had a good hit-out yesterday in the middle of one of the district grounds and it’s come up fine. I don’t feel any different to when I was bowling a few months ago. It’s feeling ready and I’m feeling confident.”Siddle was pleased to be able to test the problem before he ran into Pakistan. “I’ve got to get through this game with no worries and I am confident of doing that,” Siddle said. “Hopefully I get my spot back now and get back in there.”He comes into the squad for Rob Cassell while another boost for the Bushrangers is the fitness of Brad Hodge, who had to pull out of what was meant to be his final Sheffield Shield appearance with a knee injury.New South Wales have called in Dominic Thornely for the encounter after losing Phillip Hughes to the Australia squad.
