ICC to meet WADA on code solution

The ICC will soon engage with the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) to find out whether there can be a meeting ground on the contentious ‘whereabouts clause’ in the agency’s amended code

The ICC will soon engage with the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) to find out whether there can be a meeting ground on the contentious ‘whereabouts clause’ in the agency’s amended code. The ICC board will study the results of this engagement – and whether they will lead to a satisfactory solution – when it convenes again in three months before arriving at a final decision on implementing the WADA code.Until then, the ICC will continue in-competition and out-of-competition drug testing of all international cricketers without applying the ‘whereabouts’ clause. “We need to find a solution to the practical problem India is having, which is a constitutional issue of the country, which is why we decided to suspend the ‘whereabouts’ clause,” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC CEO, said after the board meeting in Johannesburg on Wednesday. The Indian board has been leading the opposition to the ‘whereabouts clause’ in the amended WADA code, which mandates cricketers, nominated to an international testing pool, to reveal to an ICC-nominated officer before every quarter. details of their location for an hour every day for the next three months to facilitate out-of-competition testing. This whereabouts system was to start from August 1 but was stalled after the 11 Indian cricketers in the pool, including Sachin Tendulkar, refused to reveal the required information citing security and privacy concerns. The BCCI has backed the players on this issue and its stand, in turn, has been validated by India’s Attorney-General, the country’s topmost legal officer, who has conveyed to the Indian board that the clause violates constitutional privacy guarantees.Besides, it has emerged during the ICC meetings in Johannesburg over the last few days that the BCCI’s stand has been backed by other major boards, including Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; they have apparently conveyed this in writing to the ICC, too.The Indian board’s proposed solution is that the ‘whereabouts clause’ be scrapped altogether or that testing officials accept a guarantee from national boards that a player who needed to be tested would be made available within 24 hours of a request being made. But if WADA refuses to budge over the issue, the BCCI may eventually push for the ICC to develop and implement its own cricket-specific code.”The doping question is best described as a work in progress,” David Morgan, the ICC president, said. “We will have further meetings with WADA and we hope to have a situation that is acceptable to Wada and all the cricket-playing nations.”

Além dos citados, voltam de empréstimo no começo do ano: Vagner (goleiro), Lucas (lateral-direito), Taylor (lateral-direito), Mateus Muller (lateral-esquerdo), Leandro Almeida (zagueiro), Bruninho (volante), Daniel (volante), Renato (volante), Juninho (meia), Patrick Vieira (meia-atacante), Gabriel Leite (atacante), Kaue (atacante), Leandro (atacante), Mouche (atacante) e Rodolfo (atacante). O futuro destes é incerto.

Liverpool must secure Erling Haaland

Earlier this season, it was revealed that Liverpool’s sporting director Michael Edwards will be leaving his role at the club at the end of the season after being appointed back in November 2016.

During his time at the club, he has seen the Reds secure their first Premier League trophy in 30 years and sixth Champions League title under manager Jurgen Klopp, helping the Merseyside bring in a significant number of players that have played a big part in their recent domestic and European success.

With this in mind, Edwards has the chance to end his time at the Merseyside club on a massive high note by securing a summer transfer deal for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, who the Reds have been linked with in the past.

Since joining the Bundesliga club, Haaland has managed to rack up an astounding goals record of 71 scored in 70 games across all competitions with 19 assists also under his belt, which has led to former Premier League star Thierry Henry labelling him as a “lethal” player in terms of his goalscoring.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-liverpool-news” title=”Check out the latest Liverpool news!”]

Despite suffering from some injury issues this season, the 21-year-old, who is currently valued at a whopping £135m according to Transfermarkt, has still managed to score 14 goals in 11 games. On that evidence, it’s clear to see why he was dubbed a “goal-scoring cyborg” by reporter Alex Truica.

Liverpool have managed to score more times (39) in the Premier League at this point in the season than anyone else and while Haaland may not be the most necessary transfer move for the Reds to make in the summer, it would surely be a dream move for Klopp to have someone as exciting and talented in his side that could rival Mohamed Salah for top goalscorer at the club.

However, if Edwards did make Haaland his final transfer masterclass before leaving Liverpool, it may not be as easy as he would hope. It’s recently been claimed that if the striker left Dortmund in the summer, his preferred destination would be Real Madrid.

Despite this, Liverpool have more than enough factors that Edwards could use to tempt the Norwegian with a move to Merseyside. The chance to play under Klopp and an opportunity to win big trophies are both tempting lures.

Combine that with the chance to play alongside Liverpool’s world-class players in front of a dedicated and passionate Anfield crowd in one of Europe’s top domestic leagues and this is surely a move that suits all parties.

Leeds backed to sign Kalvin Phillips deputy

Leeds United are likely to sign a backup midfielder for Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Lack of midfield depth

The Whites have suffered a number of key injury problems so far this season, with the likes of Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford missing for long periods.

Even Phillips hasn’t quite been an ever-present in the middle of the park, starting 12 of his side’s 15 Premier League matches.

There have been a lack of options in that area, especially with Robin Koch a long-term absentee, and the need for reinforcements there is clear.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Journalist makes transfer claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed it appears likely that a new No.6 will come into Leeds’ squad next month, in order to provide more depth:

“From what I’m hearing, they might bring in a No.6 midfield cover in January, somebody to provide some backup to Kalvin Phillips with Adam Forshaw just returning from injury. So probably a more defensive midfielder or central midfielder rather than an attacking one.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-27/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Makes perfect sense

Leeds don’t need to make wholesale signings in January, especially now Ayling and Bamford are fit again, but midfield is certainly a position that needs to be strengthened.

Phillips went off with a knock in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at home to Brentford, while Adam Forshaw has only recently returned from a two-year injury absence.

Someone like Cagliari and Uruguay enforcer Nahitan Nandez would be perfect, with the Leeds-linked man averaging two tackles and 2.6 aerial wins per game in Serie A this season, compared to Phillips’ 2.3 and 0.8 in the Premier League, respectively.

Calm McKay enjoys the ride

Ricky Ponting was a relieved man at the end of a gripping game in Hyderabad, with Australia taking a 3-2 series lead after Sachin Tendulkar threatened to chase 351

The injuries in Australia’s squad have been the negative of the tour of India but the big positive has been the way the secondary players have stood up to help deliver a series lead. One such man was Clint McKay, the Victoria fast bowler who debuted in Hyderabad and finished with 3 for 59 from his ten overs.Particularly impressive was the way he held his nerve in the dying stages of India’s chase, when they needed 19 from 18 balls with four wickets in hand. With the first delivery of the 48th over, McKay deceived Sachin Tendulkar with a slower ball to have him caught at short fine leg for 175.He also played his part in a run-out in the same over, taking the throw from his Victoria captain Cameron White to find Ravindra Jadeja short. McKay sent down several well-directed yorkers that kept the over to three runs and he was especially glad Tendulkar wasn’t still around to guide the chase.”I don’t think there is a good place to bowl to Sachin,” McKay told AAP. “The way he played was sensational, but in the end he didn’t quite get them over the line. We did a good job of containing through the middle overs and finally got a few wickets late in the game.”Ricky Ponting was especially pleased with McKay’s efforts towards the end of the match, when India appeared to be well on top. McKay finished with a better economy rate than the two leaders of the pace attack, Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger, and was a key in getting Australia back into the match.”He was very good, he was calm under pressure,” Ponting said. “We had to experiment late in the innings, with lots of different slower balls and things to try and take some wickets. Full credit to Clint, he executed things really well, a really good debut on that sort of wickets, I think he ended up with 3 for 50-odd off his ten, and that’s as good as anyone.”It has been a whirlwind week for McKay, who was called in to the squad when Brett Lee flew home and had never before met some of his Australia team-mates. His recent performance in the Champions League Twenty20 gave McKay a good idea of the conditions in India, and he was determined to enjoy himself regardless of how his first ODI unfolded.”From being over here in the Champions League, Shane Harwood and Damien Wright, senior guys for Victoria, said no matter what happens just have smile on your face, walk back to your mark and do it again,” he said. “There’s going to be days when they hit fours and sixes, the batsman is allowed to play a good shot.”As it turned out, McKay had good reason to smile. He could well have jumped a couple of places in Australia’s list of fast bowlers but he knows that it will be tough to force his way into the side during Australia’s home summer.”You hope,” he said. “The guys out from injury will come back in the side, there is always a pecking order, but as soon as you get an opportunity you have to make the most of it so when another one comes you are top of the list again. I am realistic about the way things are.”

Leeds backed to make move for Dele Alli

Leeds United should ‘seriously consider’ making a January move for Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Alli’s fall from grace

Alli was one of the hottest properties in English football at one point, scoring 18 Premier League goals in the 2016/17 season when he was only just out of his teens.

He has been hailed as ‘fantastic’ by former Arsenal hero Ian Wright but his stock has fallen rapidly of late, with only six league starts coming his way this season and none since the arrival of Antonio Conte.

It means a January exit could potentially be on the cards, and Leeds are desperately in need of a new midfielder, with Phil Hay believing the plan is to go shopping for one in January after the injury to Kalvin Phillips.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Leeds backed to sign Spurs man

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed Alli is an option Victor Orta and co would have to weigh up if the opportunity arrived to sign him:

“Not to rule out Leeds, either. I think if Dele Alli was there and he wanted to go to Leeds, it’s something they would have to seriously consider.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-28/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Worth a gamble?

Alli’s reputation has undoubtedly diminished over time but he is such a talented footballer and he may just require a fresh challenge.

He is still a player with 37 England caps to his name, not to mention scoring 51 goals and registering 37 assists in 179 Premier League appearances.

Granted, he wouldn’t be a signing to accommodate the loss of Phillips to injury, given his attack-minded nature, but Marcelo Bielsa may believe he could get the best out of him, and he would certainly add quality depth to a side whose injury concerns are becoming a full-blown crisis.

Sangakkara fights but India in control

Kumar Sangakkara stood alone between India and the No. 1 Test ranking, scoring his first hundred in six Tests in India

The Bulletin by Sidharth Monga05-Dec-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outKumar Sangakkara carried Sri Lanka on the fourth day with his maiden hundred in India•AFP

Kumar Sangakkara stood alone between India and the No. 1 Test ranking, scoring his first hundred in six Tests in India, a fighting effort on a pitch that helped both spinners and fast bowlers. Although India were made to work hard for six wickets on the fourth day, they were still in control of the Brabourne Test. Their position was strengthened after a Sri Lankan middle-order collapse, kicked off by Sreesanth, continued by Zaheer Khan and finished by Pragyan Ojha, resulting in four wickets for 25 runs. The day began with another umpiring howler against Tillakaratne Dilshan, followed by a stodgy 90-run stand between Tharanga Paranavitana and Sangakkara, before the middle-order wobbled against inspired bowling. By then, though, Sangakkara had overcome an edgy start against Harbhajan Singh, who extracted alarming turn and bounce even with the new ball, and went on to ensure India would have to bowl on the fifth day, and perhaps bat again too.In the morning, Dilshan looked to play a game that didn’t come naturally to him, padding away the big offbreaks from Harbhajan. Arguments will abound if that was the right approach but Dilshan was not allowed to make his own mistakes. In the sixth over, he was given lbw while padding up to a sharp offbreak that was easily missing leg stump.Although he was lucky with Dilshan’s wicket, Harbhajan then gave both the left-hand batsmen a tough time. He bowled smartly, but Sangakkara and Paranavitana batted smartly too. Harbhajan mixed pace, trajectory, line, and angle and beat the batsmen with his variations. But Sangakkara and Paranavitana didn’t let him have a prolonged spell at either of them by taking quick singles. Three of Harbhajan’s subsequent overs in that spell featured plays and misses, all four had singles.Initially Paranavitana was more at ease than Sangakkara, who looked for the getaway sweep shot against Harbhajan and nearly got out twice. Even at 98kph, Harbhajan got sharp turn and, although he didn’t bowl the doosra much, he kept the batsmen guessing with topsinners from round the stumps.Paranavitana was solid in defence and rarely played away from his body but he still played aggressive shots for release every now and then, especially against Pragyan Ojha, whom he lofted for three on-side boundaries. After lunch Paranavitana reached a well-deserved half-century, his second in the match, but was soon done in by a superb outswinger from Sreesanth. The bowler had to wait his turn on the fourth morning, with MS Dhoni choosing to begin with spin from one end, but made his presence felt with sharp swing.By then Sangakkara had settled in and Sri Lanka’s challenge was to bat through scoreless periods without letting it affect them. Sangakkara managed that, defending stoutly, using his feet against the spinners, spending 17 balls on 46, and then bringing up his fifty off 145 balls. The other two middle-order mainstays, though, couldn’t match Sangakkara. Zaheer followed Sreesanth’s impressive spell with his best of the series. A 22-ball run-less period followed a ball that moved slightly away from Mahela Jayawardene and took the edge. Four overs later, from round the stumps, Zaheer tucked up Thilan Samaraweera, who edged low to first slip where VVS Laxman took a sharp catch. Just before tea, Ojha spun one sharply across Angelo Mathews, giving Dhoni his 100th catch, and not a straightforward one at that.Sri Lanka went into the break 189 runs behind. They returned having learnt the lesson, and made a conscious effort to not get bogged down. Sangakkara started stepping out to Ojha and cleared the aggressive field placements with ease. Prasanna Jayawardene pulled and drove Zaheer for fours, slog-swept Virender Sehwag for a six, and in no time the deficit started approaching double figures. Ojha ended that partnership when Prasanna played down the wrong line and was caught lbw.The two had added 64 runs in 14.4 overs and Sangakkara had moved to 81 off 198 deliveries. Two balls later Nuwan Kulasekara survived a plumb lbw, and that was the closest India came to getting a wicket for the rest of the day. Sangakkara farmed the strike initially but soon realised Kulasekara was not having much trouble negating the spinners. Keeping with the trend on the first three days, the pitch seemed to have eased out in the final session.Sangakkara spent 24 balls in the 90s, refusing singles and picking boundaries when the fields came up for the last two balls of the overs. By the time he reached his century, India had taken the new ball, and he unleashed a flurry of attractive drives. By stumps the two had added an unbeaten 66 in 17.3 overs, and Sangakkara had scored 83 runs in 107 balls since tea. That despite refusing many a single.
