Zaheer: Drug testing would be good for the game in general•Associated Press

Zaheer Khan has said that Indian cricketers were not the only sportsmen to oppose the ‘whereabouts’ clause in the WADA code.”I’m sure athletes all over the world have problems with the clause. It is high time someone took the initiative and we are happy that we did it,” he said.Zaheer said that drug testing would be good for the game. He also said that Indian cricketers were willing to undergo tests and had concerns only over the clause which required players to disclose their whereabouts three months in advance.”We absolutely have no objection to be tested,” he said. “We know it’s important for the game that the players are tested, it’s undoubtedly for the betterment of the game we play. It’s only a particular clause that we don’t agree to.”The fast bowler said that while the players had the support of the BCCI, they would adhere to the decision of the board.Zaheer, who suffered a major shoulder injury last month and has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, said he had taken it in his stride. “We just can’t wish away injuries. They are part and parcel of the sport, and one just has to be patient. As far as I am concerned, it’s certainly not a setback for me; I am actually viewing it as an opportunity to come back stronger and fitter.”

Newcastle must axe Dwight Gayle

Newcastle officially appointed Eddie Howe as the club’s new manager earlier this month and he is now tasked with hauling the side out of the relegation zone.

The Magpies are currently 19th in the Premier League table and are the only team in the entire division yet to win a match, with 20th-placed Norwich even on one win.

A key part of his plan to evade relegation could be the January window when he could need to make major decisions on transfers in and out of St. James’ Park.

Get him gone

One player who find themselves on the chopping block in the January window is outcast centre-forward Dwight Gayle.

Steve Bruce handed him three appearances earlier this season, all of which came as a substitute, and he has been unable to prove that he is a better option than Callum Wilson at the top end of the pitch. He also played 18 times last season and scored one goal for the club in the top-flight.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

In the 2020/21 campaign, he lost a whopping 61% of his duels on the pitch and missed five ‘big chances’. This shows that he did have the service required to build on his solitary goal but his finishing was not up to the desired standard and that could be why his role has been reduced this term.

Toon legend Alan Shearer previously blasted the striker for ‘cheating’ after he was booked for a dive against Manchester City in the Premier League. He said:

“My first reaction was that it was a dive. The referee gets that absolutely spot on.

“Why would he go down there? There is no need. You have the chance to go on and pull the trigger. It is just cheating. I’m still so angry with Dwight Gayle – I really am. Why did he dive? Why didn’t he take the chance to shoot?”

Following PIF’s takeover of the club, a number of transfer links have emerged suggesting Newcastle want to sign a new striker in January. Dusan Vlahovic, Giovanni Simeone, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are just a few of the names touted with a switch to St. James’ Park in the winter window, which could leave Gayle on very thin ice.

Therefore, Howe must ruthlessly axe the £32k-per-week dud in January and allow him to leave on a permanent deal, replacing him with a fresh addition to the squad. His statistics since the start of last season suggest that he does not have the quality to make a significant impact for Howe’s team in the coming months to help them avoid relegation and that could spell the end of his career on Tyneside.

Chilton guides Lancashire to draw

Mark Chilton and Faf du Plessis guided Lancashire to a draw on the final day against Durham at Old Trafford

John Ward at Old Trafford14-Aug-2009
ScorecardLancashire escaped with a draw against Durham, with the only interference from the weather coming late on the final afternoon, as the rain kept away. Part of the reason was Durham’s failure to press home their advantage fully on the third evening, leading to a delayed declaration. But otherwise, both sides batted more competently on the whole in their second innings than the first. In the end, a fine fighting innings by Mark Chilton, helped by Faf du Plessis, saved Lancashire from defeat after a bad start to their second innings. This was probably due to a combination of factors. To an extent, the batsmen on either side worked out a more effective game plan the second time round, having taken on board lessons from the first innings. The pitch also did not seem to support as much turn and bounce on the last two days. But this may have been due to the one specialist spinner on each side, Gary Keedy and Ian Blackwell respectively, feeling a little tired after getting through such an unaccustomed amount of work first time round. Unfortunately few county teams nowadays carry two experienced specialist spinners, which would certainly have been desirable and quite possibly crucial on such a pitch, a type which is sadly rare in modern English cricket.Durham began the day on 256 for 5, and immediately showed the positive intent they might profitably have pursued the previous evening. Phil Mustard laid into Gary Keedy’s first over, hitting him for two boundaries in his first over, while Dale Benkenstein reached his 50, which due to his laborious batting after tea the previous day took him all of 146 balls. He only added eight, though, before he was run out through a brilliant piece of fielding by his fellow South African, du Plessis, who raced in to field a push by Mustard to midwicket and threw down the wicket with Benkenstein just short of his ground.Mustard, now in the company of Liam Plunkett, continued the assault, his most spectacular shot being a pull off Stephen Parry over the midwicket boundary for six. He ran to his 50 off 58 balls, at which point Durham declared. They had added 64 runs in ten overs, which only emphasized the time they had wasted the previous evening. They played Keedy in particular much better during the second innings, and this time his 46 overs brought him only two wickets for 107 runs.Lancashire were set 326 to win in 86 overs, a target they probably never seriously contemplated. Any dreams they might have had of glory were extinguished within a few minutes, however, as for the first time in the match apart from the opening overs of their first innings, the pace bowlers played a significant. Even then, it cannot be said that the bowling was particularly impressive, but rather that the batting was poor. First Paul Horton (3) cut a ball from Graham Onions square, only to see Benkenstein in the gully take a superb low diving catch. Three balls later, Mal Loye played indecisively to a good ball just outside his off stump and edged it to the keeper. Still with only four runs on the board, Parry was suckered out, hooking a bouncer from Callum Thorp straight down the throat of long leg, and Lancashire were facing capitulation. This was Chilton’s moment. He and VVS Laxman saw off the pacemen calmly, which was not too difficult with good judgment and avoidance of unnecessary risk. Laxman (23) went soon after lunch, like Loye nibbling outside the off stump to Onions and gifting the keeper a catch. Du Plessis came in and took root after a little uncertainty, but Chilton was Lancashire’s rock against which the Durham bowlers dashed themselves in vain. With Blackwell choosing to do most of his bowling over the wicket into the rough, he was happy to present the broadest of pads, but he was never dour. Briefly he cast aside his chains, reaching his 50 (84 balls) with a handsome four through the covers off Thorp, and followed it with another four and a pulled six in the same over. Then he returned to his valuable watchful game.Du Plessis, restraining his natural instincts, batted with increasing confidence and judgement, his own 50 taking 103 balls. A draw looked inevitable when at 4.30pm the umpires decided the light was inadequate, a decision that would certainly have caused controversy if the match was in the balance. Play was not resumed, and the two batsmen finished with 79 and 54 respectively, good reward for their sterling efforts.

Newcastle transfer news on Brereton Diaz

Newcastle United are reportedly tracking Ben Brereton Diaz ahead of a potential transfer move.

The Lowdown: The Chilean from Stoke

Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Brereton Diaz changed his national allegiance to Chile in June this year after playing for England at youth level, and has since managed to score three goals in nine games for the South American nation across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The Chilean press have since raved about him after some of his performances in the Copa America and in World Cup qualifying, with journalist Cecilia Lagos claiming that the 22-year-old is a ‘box killer’ who is ‘so eager’, ‘so active’ and ‘fits like a glove’ (BBC).

Brereton Diaz has become such a popular player in the South American country that he is now the face of their Pepsi commercial (BBC), and his aim is now to help Chile qualify for the World Cup in Qatar next year.

The Latest: Newcastle tracking him

As per Football League World, Newcastle are among a number of clubs who are now tracking Brereton Diaz ahead of a potential move.

Leeds United, Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton have also been tracking the 22-year-old, who has admirers in Sevilla as well.

The Verdict: Wilson alternative?

With 16 goals in just 19 Championship games so far this season (Transfermarkt), Brereton Diaz has shown that he looks capable of making the step up to the Premier League.

The 6 foot 1 striker could be a very nice alternative to Callum Wilson, who does come with injury scares. Notably, Newcastle failed to win and only managed to score four times in the four-game period that he missed earlier in the campaign (Transfermarkt).

Thus, when Wilson is injured or finds himself out of form, Brereton Diaz would be a valuable understudy to have, and the two could even play alongside one another if he is particularly impressing Eddie Howe.

He might also attract a new Chilean following to Tyneside, and he seems like a player who the Toon Army could easily get behind.

Sussex scrap but relegation looms

Sussex have good memories of this ground and against a Nottinghamshire side looking pretty ragged as the season closes it would not be a surprise were they to emerge with a win

John Culley at Trent Bridge23-Sep-2009Nottinghamshire 294 for 8 (Read 78*, Fletcher 0*) v Sussex
ScorecardSussex have good memories of this ground and against a Nottinghamshire side looking pretty ragged as the season closes it would not be a surprise were they to emerge with a win, their first in the Championship against a county other than the long-doomed Worcestershire.Sadly, victory will probably count for very little. The defeat against Yorkshire at Hove in the penultimate round had the feel of a mortal wound and Sussex knew that even if they were to take all 22 points on offer, they would have to rely on someone else — Yorkshire, Hampshire or Lancashire – taking a hammering if they were to avoid relegation to Division Two.Hard to imagine that, only three years ago, they crushed Nottinghamshire by an innings and 245 runs in three days here to secure a second Championship in four seasons, a title they would retain the following summer.Where has it all gone wrong? This year, according to Robin Martin-Jenkins, there have simply been too many mistakes. “We’ve dropped catches at crucial times, had mini batting collapses when in a strong position, maxi batting collapses from any position, fallen short of extra batting points on many occasions and even lost a point due to a slow over-rate,” he told the Brighton Argus. It might also be pointed out, quite reasonably, that they no longer have Mushtaq Ahmed. It would be incorrect to say that their three titles were down entirely to him but a brilliant spinner with a 100-wickets-a-year habit is a fairly substantial asset, as indeed he proved in that crucial moment three years ago, when Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 150 following on and he finished with 9 for 48.Yet a side that reaches the Friends Provident final, wins the Twenty20 Cup and will probably clinch the final Pro40 title as well cannot be hopeless in four-day cricket and, among seven almost equally moderate counties between Worcestershire and runaway champions Durham, Sussex may simply feel they were the ones left standing when the music stopped.Given that Nottinghamshire, chasing second place and the £225,000 prize that now goes with it, entered the last round with three wins to Sussex’s two, they might have a point. On the other hand, if the number of defeats were seen as the crucial statistic, they are clearly the next-to-worst team. This game, so far, has gone reasonably well for them – but not as well as they would have liked when Michael Yardy opted to let Nottinghamshire’s batsmen have first use of a pitch that promised more than it has delivered so far as his bowlers were concerned. They will surely collect maximum bowling points, but whether they can fashion a win remains to be seen. With a good covering of grass, the pitch did help the ball bite and deviate for the seamers even late in the afternoon but with not much pace there was little margin for error.Productive opening stands have been a rarity for Nottinghamshire this summer. Indeed, not since Darren Bicknell retired at the end of 2006 have the county enjoyed dependability at the top of the order. So for Bilal Shafayat and Alex Hales to put on 70 for the first wicket, their second-best opening stand of the summer, was a bonus.Hales, a tall right-hander who will probably open with new signing Neil Edwards next season, was first to fall, lbw playing across the line to Jason Lewry, in his farewell Championship match after a 14-year career.Shafayat departed soon afterwards, taken well by Yardy at first slip off a ball that bounced perhaps more than he expected. Samit Patel was a little unlucky to play on to Martin-Jenkins, while his 19-year-old brother, Akhil, a left-hand batsman making his Championship debut, lasted only four deliveries before, trying to work to leg, he was trapped in front by Dwayne Smith.A fine catch by Rory Hamilton-Brown at second slip, holding on to a ball that Ally Brown went after hard, reduced Nottinghamshire to 163 for 5 but the wicket Sussex really wanted was Mark Wagh, who had been dropped on 19 by Murray Goodwin at gully.Ultimately he was bowled by a leg-break from Piyush Chawla as Goodwin, in charge in Yardy’s absence, turned to the Indian wrist-spinner but not until he and the Nottinghamshire captain, Chris Read, had put on 76 for the sixth wicket.Read, far and away his side’s most consistent performer with the bat, lost two more partners as Mark Ealham — another in his farewell first-class match — became Chawla’s second victim and Andre Adams, trying to execute an unnecessarily risky slog-sweep, was bowled. But the wicketkeeper survived on 78 at the close and Nottinghamshire will surely claim at least a third batting point, putting them on course to pass Somerset in the race for second spot, in which Warwickshire are the other contenders.
