There are ambitious plans for Old Trafford’s future•Lancashire CCC

Lancashire have pushed back the timetable for turning the Old Trafford square by a year, but are still on course to meet the redevelopment deadline of 2012 as they aim to secure their international futureThe pitch was due to be rotated 90 degrees at the end of the current season, but the major project will now take place after the 2010 campaign. The club said that this is to try and minimise disruption to the cricket seasons and keep costs down.”The decision to turn the square at the end of the 2010 season doesn’t affect our goal of having the new cricket square up and running by 2012,” Jim Cumbes, the chief executive, said. “The reason we’ve moved this element of the redevelopment is to contain the period of disruption to one season, whereas starting at the end of the 2009 season will affect two cricket seasons thus reducing the stadium’s capacity and increasing costs for temporary facilities.”Changing the programme will also provide some additional time for the club to work with outgrounds and help produce the best conditions possible for Lancashire’s first-class matches during the 2011 season.”The plan for the 2011 season will be to split Lancashire’s matches between Liverpool and Blackpool, while a couple of outgrounds not used in recent years may come back into consideration. The building work at Old Trafford has swung into action over the winter with a new outfield and drainage system laid along with the demolition of the Tyldesley, County and Jubilee Suites to pave the way for a new development.Turning the square is part of phase two, which will see the building of a new “Players, Media and Education Pavilion” on the Metrolink tram side of the ground where there is currently a double-decker stand. One of the main reasons for rotating the pitch is to prevent the setting sun causing problems during September and it will also increase the number of strips available from 11 to 16.”Our vision and plans are very ambitious, possibly the most complex of any sports development in progress,” Cumbes added. “There will be disruption for spectators and patrons over the next few years, but once built, the improved facilities will provide Lancashire with state-of-the-art facilities and a world-class venue that will have a long-term international future.”Lancashire’s long-term ambition is to secure a 2013 Ashes Test having been overlooked for this year’s series.

Jesus must start for Man City vs Brugge

After securing a 2-0 win over Burnley in their latest Premier League outing, Manchester City are back in European action on Tuesday evening with an away clash against Belgian side Club Brugge on the cards for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Their previous Champions League tie saw them lose 2-0 against Paris Saint-Germain thanks to goals from Idrissa Gana Gueye and Lionel Messi.

On the chalkboard

One player that did not feature in the game against Burnley at the weekend who we feel should be in the starting XI for City against Brugge is Gabriel Jesus.

Jesus was not involved in the game against Burnley due to his involvement with Brazil on international duty just a short period before the match against Sean Dyche’s side.

Now that he should be back and available for the team, we feel that Jesus, who has been labelled as City’s “unsung hero” by Guardiola in the past, should definitely be in the starting XI for the midweek match.

City signed Jesus back in the 2017 summer transfer window from Brazilian club Palmeiras. Since then, the 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £54m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 204 appearances for the Manchester club across all competitions in which he has managed to score 85 goals and provide 38 assists in the process.

So far this season, Jesus has made nine appearances for City across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists, proving how much of an important attacking asset he has been for the club, even more so considering he managed to score the winning goal in City’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea, proving himself as a match-winner for the team.

His latest appearance for City in their 2-2 draw against Liverpool saw Jesus pick up an assist and ultimately earn himself a solid match rating of 7.1/10 according to SofaScore.

Looking ahead to the Brugge match, we feel that not only will Jesus give Guardiola the chance to rotate his team and give one of his attacking players that featured against Burnley a rest, but would also give the team a great chance of winning based on the attacking prowess he’s shown so far this season.

– Nosso time é assim, sempre que o companheiro estiver bem colocado a gente vai tocar a bola.

'Pakistan have to bide their time'

23-Apr-2009Paul Marsh,
Paul Marsh: “The difficulty here is that until cricket returns to Pakistan and the implementation of agreed security plans is tested, how can any board or player association confidently recommend to its players to tour?”•Getty Images

There are two major issues that would need to be overcome before the ACA could recommend that its players tour Pakistan again.Firstly, the general threat levels are unacceptably high at present. As such the country would have to stabilise significantly and who knows how long this could take. Unfortunately this is largely uncontrollable, so those involved in Pakistan cricket have to bide their time and hope for improvement.Secondly, based on past experience we have limited confidence in the ability of the security forces to deliver on agreed security plans. This is an area that we believe can and must be addressed. The difficulty here is that until cricket returns to Pakistan and a board agrees to tour, and therefore test the implementation of agreed security plans, how can any board or player association confidently recommend to its players to tour? What’s most important right now is for cricket as a whole to address every aspect of security in every country. We must be receiving the best information on all potential countries and venues, we must develop the best possible plans and implement these plans exactly as laid out and then audit and review them constantly. There is no room for error in the area of security.Graeme Labrooy,
One way forward for Pakistan cricket is to revise their strategy in the short-term and look for a neutral venue like Dubai, or even Sri Lanka. For instance, who would have thought that the IPL will be held in South Africa this year? I just hope Pakistan’s cricketers won’t lose heart and will grab whatever chances they get to keep on playing, be it even in the English or Australian leagues. The Pakistan Cricket Board, meanwhile, has to play a crucial role in constantly communicating with and updating other boards on the situation there. It’s hard to say when international cricket will restart in Pakistan, because there’s lots to be done. But I do believe that it will return. To start with, there could be an security review in Pakistan in about six to seven months, with the ICC stepping in, and we could take it from there. Who knows, the situation would have improved by then. But the key is for the board to keep its communication channels open. From a Sri Lankan point of view, the players have gotten over the Lahore attack though the memories will remain for ever. And I am happy that some of them are moving forward and have started playing again in the IPL, if not for the country.Tony Irish,
One hopes that cricket will again be played in Pakistan. It is obviously a country with a great passion for the game. But in the forseeable future – the short- to medium-term – it is difficult to see teams touring there. The general approach is that we rely on our security consultants to inform us of the internal and external risks of a nation ahead of a tour. I think we would need to see a substantial lowering of that risk before any team would consider returning. When we were dealing with the issue of playing in Pakistan ahead of the Champions Trophy, the big concerns being relayed to us was of the number of incidents and attacks in the cities that were reprisals for what was going on in the North West Frontier Province. Since then, there have been more attacks, and cricket was specifically targetted, so the situation has deteriorated even in that timeframe.Heath Mills,
You hear some people saying we shouldn’t be playing in Pakistan for four or five years, but I don’t abide by that theory. There shouldn’t be any time limits. I think playing there in the next little while will be difficult, and it’s no secret that our series that was to be played in Pakistan might now be played (in New Zealand). But perhaps by the end of this year I think each series should be judged on a case-by-case basis. We should speak to our security experts, and if they give the green light in 12, 18 or 24 months, then we should go.

Arsenal fans slam Pepe vs Crystal Palace

Many Arsenal fans have been left slamming the display of Nicolas Pepe in their 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Monday night.

The former Lille star actually started off quite well, with a nice curling effort that was saved by Vicente Guaita and then tucked home by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the opening few minutes of the first half.

However, his performance became increasingly laboured, as he struggled to have any real impact on the game after that.

The Ivory Coast international lost out on 13 of his duels, and failed with five crossing attempts and five dribbles, while he also lost possession of the ball on no fewer than on 22 separate occasions in the match, the most out of any of his teammates to have set foot on the pitch (Sofascore).

These Gunners slammed his performance on Twitter, with one supporter even going as far as to claim that he has been ‘woeful’:

“I’m also done with Pepe at this club he’s so wasteful. He’s been overall woeful for £72m. Lille robbed us. Move him on in Jan and give a young player a chance.”

West Brom: Fans react to club’s Mbaye Diagne post

West Brom took to Twitter on Thursday to wish former striker Mbaye Diagne a happy birthday.

And a number of Baggies fans were quick to flock to the official post, with some even throwing in the suggestion of bringing him back to The Hawthorns in the New Year.

West Brom signed the Senegal international back in January on loan for the rest of the season with an option to buy.

Unfortunately, Diagne couldn’t prevent the Baggies from returning straight back to the Championship, scoring three times in 16 appearances, so the permanent clause wasn’t activated.

He’s now back with Galatasaray, where he has found the back of the net on three occasions in 14 games, whereas West Brom, now managed by Valerien Ismael, sit third in the second tier.

West Brom’s post regarding Diagne caught the attention of these Baggies supporters, with a selection of responses available to view below, where one fan called him a ‘monster’ – the 6 foot 4 target man did win over three aerial duels per game as a Baggie after all…

The domestic Twenty20 winners of West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, as well as Delhi Daredevils, will also get an opportunity to participate in the inaugural Champions Twenty20 League, to be held from October 8-23 in India, just after the Champions Trophy. Lalit Modi, the tournament’s chairman, said the prize money for the tournament will be US$ 6 million, and the draw will be held in London on June 23 after which the venues will be finalised.Delhi have been included on the basis of having topped the round-robin stage of the 2009 IPL. They will be joined by Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the 2009 IPL finalists.Other 2009 domestic finalists and winners include Victoria and New South Wales (Australia), Cape Cobras and Eagles (South Africa), Otago (New Zealand), Trinidad and Tobago (West Indies) and Wayamba (Sri Lanka). England’s Twenty20 Cup only begins on Monday and the finalists will only be decided on August 25.There will be a total of 23 matches and the teams will be divided into four groups of three each to play on a league basis before the top two teams from each group move on to the second stage. The four top teams from there will play the semi-finals.Last year’s IPL finalists Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings will not be eligible. Sialkot Stallions, the winners of Pakistan’s domestic Twenty20 tournament, will not feature as originally scheduled because their government has restricted travel to India.”Unfortunately, the Pakistan government won’t give them clearance to come to India, and since yesterday was out cut-off date, it’s not possible to have a team from Pakistan this year,” said Modi. “Delhi Daredevils this year have highest points from the league. But from next year, the third team from India will be decided from a play-off between the two losing semi-finalists.”Modi also said that players from the unofficial ICL could also represent their domestic teams, provided they resign from the league before May 31. However, if their domestic sides qualify for the Champions League those players will not be allowed to play as part of a “one-year cooling period”.The tournament was initially supposed to held from December 3-11 2008 in Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore but was put off after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The cancellation came as a huge blow for the teams that qualified for the 2008 edition, as they would have received at least US$250,000 as participating fees. Each team gets a minimum guarantee amount for playing in the tournament. On the night of the IPL final in Johannesburg, Modi said on television that the fourth season of the IPL, in 2011, could feature ten teams instead of eight.
