A Conservative councillor has attacked Birmingham City Council’s decision to lend Warwickshire £20 million in order to fund the redevelopment of Edgbaston.The ambitious plans were unveiled in October and include increasing capacity by 5000 with the construction of a new stand. In addition, and to help recover the loan, there will be corporate hospitality suites as is now common with modern cricket grounds.At the time Warwickshire claimed they would need to borrow £10 million, but a row at Birmingham City Council has broken out with rumours that the club will need at least double that figure. For a club who have struggled to break even in the past two years, there are deep concerns over how they will repay such a significant loan.”Some important questions need to be asked. The council helps many organisations but is it right to give financial support by means of a loan considering our other priorities?” James Hutchings, chairman of the council’s finance committee, told the .”During the past couple of seasons the cricket club has barely broken even. If they are only just breaking even how can they afford to pay £1 million annual interest charges and at some stage repay the loan? It wouldn’t be very friendly for the council to lend them the money if that drives the club into financial failure.”Edgbaston is just one high-profile ground in England to announce extensive redevelopment plans. Both Lord’s and The Oval, in London, have promised to expand their capacities and protect their financial future with corporate hospitality, and even hotels. Last week, the MCC expressed concern that their new development – which is estimated at £200 million – may run into difficulty if, as is threatened, the ECB decrease the number of Test matches hosted at the home of cricket.”There is a big question mark in my mind as to whether [Edgbaston] will be able ever to repay the loan and whether the council has more urgent things to fund,” Hutchings said. “The cricket club are very keen to retain Test match status and I absolutely support them in that.”A spokesman for the council said discussions were ongoing.
Everton have been involved in a dramatic saga over the last few days involving one of their star players; Richarlison.
Premier League teams took a collective stance over the international break when sides agreed not to send players to red-list countries.
However, FIFA have come together with the relevant national bodies of various nations in a bid to ban players who didn’t travel for five days.
That would mean that any affected player would not be able to play for their club in the top-flight this weekend.
Brazilian players have been hit the hardest with the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Roberto Firmino, Alisson, Ederson and Fabinho among the high profile names to be banned.
However, Everton have been treated leniently by Brazil and they will have Richarlison available to select when the Toffees face Burnley next Monday.
The Merseyside outfit has a particularly healthy relationship with the Brazilian FA after they allowed the striker to go to the Olympics earlier this summer.
Richarlison was a key part of their gold medal triumph as the Everton star scored five goals en route to the top of the medal rostrum. As such, the Brazilian FA has decided not to invoke a ban on the Toffees’ forward.
This will come as a huge boost for Rafa Benitez who will no doubt be delighted to have the attacker available.
After all, Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains a doubt for the game with a broken toe and thus, he may need his Brazilian dynamo to play through the middle.
He has scored once this term but played in a central role at the Olympics and thrived, netting a 30-minute first-half hat-trick against Germany at one stage.
Calvert-Lewin is the player who usually carries the load from an offensive point of view and if Benitez was without both him and Richarlison, they would have struggled significantly.
Instead, they will face Sean Dyche’s men with extra confidence now after this saga was resolved.
The 24-year-old only scored once in his last 12 outings towards the end of last term and has failed to register a single assist in 2021.
However, he still finished last season as one of the club’s most important offensive players with 13 strikes to his name.
Consequently, it will be a seismic advantage to have him available.

O discurso foi reforçado pelo técnico Rogério Ceni. Neste quadro, a semana que se inicia pode ser determinante. O Tricolor tem, até o próximo domingo quando enfrenta o Santos, o último período mais largo de treinamentos para sair da zona da degola.
A famosa “semana cheia”, tão pedida pelos treinadores num calendário ingrato, só se repetirá na virada de turno após sete jogos. Ceni voltará a ter esse período após o duelo contra o Bahia, marcado para 6 de agosto no Pituaçu. Dali, serão sete dias até a partida contra o Cruzeiro, primeira rodada do returno, no Morumbi. Até lá, após encarar o Santos, viverá a rotina do jogo “quarta e domingo, quarta e domingo”.
– Ganhando jogos, não tem outra maneira. Trabalhando todos os dias. Tentando fazer com que a equipe se torne cada vez mais forte, tentando mentalmente trabalhar a cabeça dos jogadores. Claro que não é bom estar na zona ou mesmo próximo dela como estávamos. Temos 28 rodadas pela frente e temos de buscar sair dessa situação incômoda – afirmou Ceni, sobre como tirar o time da situação que se encontra.
Desde o início do Brasileirão, o São Paulo teve três semanas cheias e os resultados não foram tão animadores. A primeira surtiu efeito. Agora, o adversário é o Santos, que faz nesta quarta-feira, em Curitiba, o primeiro jogo das oitavas de final da Libertadores contra o Atlético-PR. O técncio Levir Culpi poupou o time no último sábado no empate por 1 a 1 com o Atlético-GO. Não dá para saber se fará o mesmo no clássico, mas terá o desgaste do jogo na semana.
Se serve de motivação, o Tricolor tem a lembrança da vitória contra o rival no Campeonato Paulista. O 3 a 1 na Vila Belmiro simbolizou o melhor momento do time na temporada. Porém, vale lembrar que Luiz Araújo, principal destaque daquele embate com dois gols, nem está mais no elenco. Foi vendido ao Lille (FRA), representação dos problemas do São Paulo atual.

Some West Brom supporters have slaughtered Karlan Grant’s performance in the Baggies’ disappointing goalless draw with Derby County.
Valerien Ismael’s side could only draw 1-1 at home to Millwall last weekend, although the point still took them to the top of the Championship.
On Tuesday night, West Brom faced another home league game, with Derby widely expected to be swatted aside at the Hawthorns.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, however, with the Baggies unable to break down their opponents, eventually having to settle for a 0-0 draw.
One player who struggled was Grant, with the striker offering very little in the first half and eventually being substituted at the interval.
It was another performance that suggested the 23-year-old isn’t good enough to lead the line for Ismael’s side.

كشفت تقارير صحفية إسبانية أن ممثلي أحد لاعبي فريق بايرن ميونخ عرضوا خدمات موكلهم على نادي ريال مدريد في موسم الانتقالات الصيفي الحالي.
وحسبما ذكرت صحيفة “ماركا” الإسبانية، فإن خدمات لاعب بايرن ميونخ ليروي ساني قد عُرضت على نادي ريال مدريد هذا الصيف.
وأوضحت إنه خلال مفاوضات رحيل لوكا يوفيتش إلى فيورنتينا، تم عرض ليروي ساني على ريال مدريد، حيث أن الثنائي يتشاركا على صعيد من يمثلهما.
ويمتلك ليروي ساني عقدًا ساريًا مع بطل الدوري الألماني حتى 2025.

وأشارت إلى أن ريال مدريد قد أوضح إنه يركز في الوقت الحالي على بيع اللاعبين وليس التعاقد مع آخرين جدد.
وأوضحت أن الأولوية الرئيسية على طاولة مسؤولي ريا لمدريد تتمثل في التخلص من اللاعبين غير المرغوب فيهم في النادي.

O Vasco conseguiu o seu primeiro ponto fora de casa no Brasileiro com o empate em 2 a 2 contra o Coritiba, no último domingo. O panorama poderia ser melhor, já que o time de Milton Mendes chegou a abrir o placar. Pelas circunstâncias da partida e o retrospecto cruz-maltino longe de São Januário, o zagueiro Paulão classificou de forma positiva o resultado.
– Voltar com o empate fora de casa foi excelente considerando que a gente não estava conseguindo voltar com ponto nenhum. Saímos na frente no placar, os três pontos eram bons para a gente, mas dentro do jogo muitas coisas aconteceram, tomamos o 2 a 1 e no final ainda conseguimos o empate. عاد لاعب خط الوسط إلى ما أسماه “المنزل” في تورينو بعد فترة ستة أعوام قضاها مع مانشستر يونايتد، وفي كل من عامي 2012 و2022 وصل كوكيل حر.
وقال بوجبا لـ”DAZN Italia”: “سعيد جدًا بالعودة إلى هنا، لقد جعلني الجميع أشعر وكأنني في المنزل”.
بعض الأشياء لم تتغير، لأنه مثل فترته الأولى مع البيانكونيري، أصبح ماسيمليانو أليجري مدربًا ليوفنتوس مرة أخرى.
وأضاف بوجبا: “المدرب لا يزال هو نفسه بالضبط، لم أعد أبلغ من العمر 22 عامًا، ولكن عندما يكون لديك عائلة ومسؤوليات، فإنك تتعلم الكثير في الحياة، لقد تغيرت جسديًا أيضًا، أنا أكثر قوة”.
