Carlos Tevez issues Manchester City apology

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has issued an apology to the club for his actions over the last couple of months.

The Argentina international had been on self-enforced exile back in his homeland, but after failing to secure a move elsewhere in the January transfer window returned back to the Etihad Stadium.

After a meeting with the club’s representatives on Tuesday night, including City’s football administrator Brian Marwood, Tevez has said sorry for his actions.

“I wish to apologise sincerely and unreservedly to everybody I have let down and to whom my actions over the last few months have caused offence. My wish is to concentrate on playing football for Manchester City Football Club,” a statement on the club’s official website reads.

Etihad Stadium boss Roberto Mancini spoke to reporters ahead of the club’s Europa League last 32 second leg with Porto, but refused to be drawn into conversation regarding Tevez.

“I am here to talk about Porto,” the Italian told reporters, published on Sky Sports.

When asked if he would meet with Tevez soon to discuss the player’s future he remained adamant not to mention the subject.

“There is a meeting tomorrow – against Porto,” the trainer defied.

Meanwhile, Samir Nasri has admitted that he would welcome Tevez’s return to the City first team, as the current Premier League leaders search for glory this season.

“I didn’t speak to Carlos.

“I think he is an important player for us and for every team in Europe, because he has quality.

“I don’t know what happened. If he has to apologise, then he has to do it and then he will be in the squad, because we need players of his quality to win the league and the Europa League.

“After that it is for the club and Carlos to deal with,” the French midfielder admitted.

£11m bid a no-brainer for Kenny & £15m fee to throw Liverpool off the scent – Best of LFC

If you are going to win a derby then do it in style and Steven Gerrard inspired Liverpool to arguably their most comfortable win in years that saw the Reds complete a league double over their fierce rivals. The win brought welcome relief to Kenny Dalglish, who has challenged his players and his strike force in particular to follow the lead of the club captain in being more clinical in front of goal that has arguably been the real problem for the Reds this season so far.

This week on FFC we have seen a mixed bag of blogs that include Dalglish’s problems with the Press are justified; a Liverpool great treated poorly, while the ten positives to take from the season so far.

After 15 years of gloom at Hillsborough could the glory days finally be on their way back?

The relationship of every football fan to their club has its ups and downs – but it’s fair to say being a Sheffield Wednesday fan over the last 15 years has been a pretty relentless, depressing slog.

Relegation from the premier league, two drops from the second tier, almost going bust, performances of such staggering ineptitude as to take your breath away, John Beswetherick, it’s not been much fun. And for the younger fan, it’s all they’ve ever known – the glory days of Hirst, Waddle, Wembley trips and European football happening in the far distant past for these tender young owlings.

That’s why this season has captured the imagination of all Wednesdayites – for probably the first time since  the mid 90s, we are in the mix, a force to be reckoned with, one of the better teams in the league. (Granted, we did manage to get promoted in 2005, but we didn’t exactly dominate anything that season apart from a couple of heady, Kenwyne filled months). And this Saturday, away at Huddersfield, could be the most massive game in a season chock full of massive games.

We currently lie in third – two points behind our bitter, and significantly less successful, city rivals Sheffield United and three points above the Terriers. A win at the Galpharm and we all but bury our West Yorkshire cousins – leaving a straight shoot out between us and the Blades.  A loss, or a draw, and things look pretty rosy for United as they bid to avoid the buttock-clenching uncertainty of the play-offs. But form is with us – since Dave Jones took the reins at Hillsborough, following the controversial departure of life-long fan and ex-player Gary Megson, we have not lost a single game.

Five wins and a draw have seen us take 16 points from a possible 18 – promotion form in any division. However, without wishing to be disrespectful to Bury (if such a thing is possible), the upcoming all Yorkshire tie will be the first real test since the super scouser arrived at the helm.

Few will forget the enthralling (and unjust) 4-4 draw in December when Jordan Rhodes set Hillsborough alight with a four goal haul and, as a side who have only lost four times all season, no one doubts that three points is a tough ask.

But there are reasons to be optimistic, Mikael Antonio, on loan from Reading has hugely impressed with his cheetah-like pace on the wings, Jose Semedo has been quite literally magical all season, and target man and part time horse boxer Gary Madine has found his scoring boots again.

Four thousand Wednesdayites are expected to make the short hop to the wrong side of Yorkshire and will no doubt be in fine voice throughout, but the pressure may finally tell on a Wednesday side as they near the final hurdle.

Things Go From Bad To Worse At Coventry

More bad news came out of Coventry last Friday as Clive Platt decided to leave Coventry to join League Two side Northampton Town.

Northampton are currently being managed by ex Coventry manager Aidy Boothroyd, the man who brought Platt to the Ricoh two years ago.

Platt was also managed by Boothroyd at Colchester United and it is clear that the two have a good relationship. Platt undoubtedly suits the style of play that Boothroyd makes his teams play and this good relationship and style of play which plays to Platt’s strengths will have had some influence on his decision to drop down to League Two.

Coventry City’s development director Steve Waggot went on record saying however that it was due to a disparity on the length of the contract the player wanted and what the club was prepared to offer. This is unbelievably frustrating as it’s the same thing that happened with Marlon King a year ago.

He has taken a two year contract at Northampton which means we could have only offered him a one year deal. Personally I feel that is insulting to Platt and I completely back him in his decision to leave. Everyone knows we have a very small squad size and with a transfer embargo in place we cannot increase the size of it; for that reason we should be doing everything we can to keep the players that we actually are allowed to keep.

We are now down to the bare bones in terms of forward players. In the last 12 months we have lost the likes of King, Jutkiewicz and now Platt. Only McDonald was brought in as a permanent replacement with Nimley being a short term fix in the latter part of the season.

We now have McDonald, McSheffery if you class him as a striker which personally I don’t and O’Donovan who we can all agree is not even worth counting as a striker. Look passed them and then we are down to youngsters like Jeffers, Wilson and Daniels who are either not good enough or not ready to make the step up to the first team.

If this is the strike force that we are going to begin next season with then we are going to find goals hard to come by. McDonald has every potential to be a brilliant League One striker and I was actually quite excited to see him play. However now that he has no real strike partner I can’t see him flourishing in the way he could have if given someone to play alongside him.

Another player who is rumoured to possibly be on the way out is that of Gael Bigirimana. I have heard some fans saying that they wouldn’t be too bothered if he was to go because at least we should get a decent amount of money for him. This is irrelevant though as for one the transfer embargo stops us from reinvesting the money and plus SISU wouldn’t give us a penny of that money to spend on a new player anyway.

Bigirimana had a bright start to this season and showed a lot of promise, winning praises from everyone involved with Coventry City and many others from the footballing world. His form did tail off through the season though and at times became a bit of a liability in the middle of midfield. He is however very young and should never have had to be involved in what was a disastrous season for the club.

He has clear potential and is exuberant and unbelievably passionate. He won the Football League Apprentice of the Year this season which is not easy and really tells its own story of what a brilliant young lad he is. I personally would be gutted if he left as he is the type of player that could make himself a bit of a legend at the club.

If players continue to leave then I can only see one thing happening and that will be relegation to League Two. Andy Thorn has stuck at it through testing times but if he sees all of his best players leave and is not able to replace them for the second season in a row then he surely will walk away and then what? No-one is going to be stupid enough to take on what is clearly a sinking ship and having already appointed from within last time around who will be left to take over.

Everybody at the club including the players must be becoming disheartened and the longer it continues the more disheartened they are going to become. I would not blame any of the players for leaving and I am surprised that any of them actually want to stay. The continuation of bad news after bad news is becoming extremely difficult to take and everyone at the club is in need of a lift. Let’s just hope we get one soon and I am personally hoping it is the news that Keogh will be staying, although this is looking more and more unlikely.

Potential bargains for Premier League clubs as the ‘Submarine’ sinks further

In much the same way Athletic Bilbao have suddenly become everyone’s second favourite team following their heroics against Manchester United—or indeed, the flavour of the month—Villarreal used to offer up similar alternatives to the big two in Spain in Real Madrid and Barcelona. If you were looking for a attractive football complemented with players capable of executing the free-flowing ideologies of the club’s ethos, then the Yellow Submarine were an exceptional offering, especially for those looking for strength in Spanish football besides the two regular heavyweights.

What has been deeply saddening is the way in which Villarreal have crumbled this season following their fourth-placed finish in the league last year and the quality they displayed on countless occasions. This is a team who are now dangerously close to the relegation spots, a team who have sacked a second manager this season, and who have only won back-to-back games once all year. There’s a very real possibility that if the Yellow Submarine sink into the second division in Spain, it may be a very long time before they surface in the top flight again.

The positives for the club at the moment is that they do not make up part of the 752 million euros owed to the taxman as much of Spanish football do. They have continued to go about their business in a respectable manner, selling in order to buy; the meagre capacity of 25,000 at El Madrigal is reflective of this, but their showing in European competition in recent years is suggestive of a team who are very much on the up.

Even without the threat of relegation this year there was always a certainty that key players would be moved on. A move for star striker Giuseppe Rossi to Barcelona failed to materialise last summer, while the club were desperately trying to find a buyer for the Italian’s strike partner Nilmar in the winter transfer window. Despite losing Rossi in October for six months to injury—a striker who netted 32 times last season—Nilmar’s sale was vital for the club who had struggled to pay their players.

But the problems are a little deeper than their failure to find the net on a consistent basis this year—deputy Marco Reuben is just not of the quality of Rossi or Nilmar—the club lost their creative spark, their ‘real’ talisman and their identity on the pitch and in the dressing room when Santi Cazorla joined Malaga last summer for 21 million euros. Dubbed ‘Our Ronaldinho’ by his team-mates, the Spanish winger was just as influential to Villarreal as the Brazilian was to Barcelona in the early-mid 2000s. He was their driving force on the pitch, was an extremely likeable and funny character in the dressing room, and was perhaps the closest thing they had to the superstars in the squads of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Much like the club will need to do this summer, they desperately needed to shift one of their star players and bring in serious money. The proceeds from Cazorla’s sale went on Udinese’s defender Cristian Zapata, who has not done the job at the back for the side this season, and Jonathan de Guzman from Mallorca.

[ad_pod id=’dfp-mpu’ align=’right’]

The transformation from a team who recently finished second in La Liga and qualified for this season’s Champions League via fourth place last year to a team on the brink of relegation is sure to spark an number of big name exits in the summer. Borja Valero, despite having failed to make an impression at West Brom in 2008/09, is sure to be on the radar of many clubs with a much greater standing than the midlands club—Barcelona have in the past been singled-out as a possible destination. While goalkeeper Diego Lopez, midfielder Bruno, defender Gonzalo Rodriguez and, of course, strikers Nilmar and Rossi are all capable of going abroad and making an impression.

The arrivals of Juan Mata, David Silva and Sergio Aguero in the Premier League, and specifically the success of the latter two, are sure to open the door for a smaller, technically gifted footballer in the shape of those at Villarreal.

Who Will Be Ipswich’s Goalkeeper Next Season?

Paul Jewell has made no secret of the fact that he is looking to sign a new goalkeeper for next season.

Since then everyone has been left guessing as to who will actually be in between the sticks next season.

Ipswich have struggled to maintain organisation and leadership at the back largely due to the fact that they haven’t had a permanent first team goalkeeper in so long.

Many fans have voiced their displeasure towards the approach of signing goalkeepers on loan for obvious reasons. Often goalkeepers loaned in like David Stockdale have been very disappointing in terms of their on field displays. Whilst Stockdale was capable he did seem to be very over rated before joining Ipswich and when he was recalled from his loan he wasn’t missed by many.

The other problem with a loan goalkeeper is even more fundamental, as if you actually manage to capture a decent goalkeeper on loan then he could well be recalled and leave the team in a bad state. It may have worked for other clubs but Ipswich really haven’t had much luck with loaning goalkeepers and it would be very surprising to see Paul Jewell make the same mistake again.

By that logic young Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Amos can almost completely be ruled out as an option as he would probably only sign on loan. His former team mate Tomasz Kuszczak is a more likely option as he is available on a free transfer after being released from Manchester United. At 30 years old Kuszczak has at least 3 seasons left in him before he starts to decline in terms of his playing ability so he wouldn’t just be a short term option for Ipswich. Whether the Polish international would be interested in joining Ipswich is another matter though. It is important to remember that there are probably a lot of clubs interested in Kuszczak and chances are they are in a much more promising position as a club.

A shorter term option would be taking on unwanted QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny. It is likely that Kenny will join up with Neil Warnock though as he has been Warnock’s right hand man for many years now. Even if Ipswich were able to convince Kenny to join I would be much happier to see them search for a goalkeeper who would be capable of playing for at least the next 3 or 4 seasons.

If Ipswich were to gain promotion ideally they wouldn’t want to be forced into spending a large amount on a Premier League goalkeeper, similarly, if Ipswich fail to gain promotion they will want to build a stable squad for the future with a consistent face in goal.

The other players that Ipswich have been linked with are Scott Loach, Brad Guzan and Colin Doyle. It is safe to say that Scott Loach probably won’t be joining Ipswich as he would cost a reasonably large fee to buy, whereas the other options are better and cheaper.

Personally, I rate Brad Guzan over Colin Doyle but either would do a good enough job at Championship level. In terms of who Jewell ideally wants it is probably Kuszczak as he is a top quality goalkeeper who would be capable of playing in the Premier League.

However, like I mentioned earlier it is likely that Kuszczak will be well sought after and his wage demands are likely to be very high. A more realistic hope would be that Ipswich sign Guzan or Doyle. Whoever the next signing is everyone will be hoping that they will be a solid choice for the long term.

Rodgers believes Luis Suarez will extend deal

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has stated that he expects key forward Luis Suarez to sign a new contract this summer.

The Uruguay international has been a controversial figure since moving to Merseyside from Ajax in January 2011, but has shown some exhilarating performances on the pitch also.

Due to the media frenzy that brewed up over his racist remarks to Patrice Evra the South American has been linked with a transfer abroad, with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus said to be keen.

Despite this the Northern Irish coach expects Suarez to prolong his stay at Anfield.

“I have had a good conversation with Luis over the phone,” Rodgers told the club’s official website.

“From the outset, he has seemed a really good guy. He loves the city and the passion.

“We have exchanged lots of texts. He sent me a text on the first morning, wishing me good luck.

“He has really bought into what we are trying to do.

“He was really excited about how we played at Swansea last year. He is really keen and looking forward to playing in a similar sort of model.

Fulham looking to test Wolves’ resolve with bid

Fulham have made a £4.5 million bid for Wolves winger Matt Jarvis, according to The Telegraph.

The Molineux club were relegated from the Premier League last season and now face a battle to hold onto their best players.

Martin Jol is eager to strengthen his contingent this summer, and has lodged the bid with the Midlands club.

As yet there has been no news on whether the offer has been accepted or refused, but it is believed that Wolves are eager to recoup closer to the £10 million mark for Jarvis, who has been capped by England on one occasion.

Meanwhile, Jol has also identified Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes as a possible transfer target and will make an enquiry over the Scotland international in coming days.

The attacker has caught the attention of several Premier League clubs in recent times after a stellar goalscoring record in the lower leagues, but Fulham face competition from Blackburn to sign the £6 million-rated forward.

The Full Leeds United Season Preview

Summer is never an easy time for Leeds United fans. Ever since their relegation from the Premier League, the first team squad has proved easy pickings for the vultures preying on United’s precarious financial situation. Even now, with the club on a secure financial footing, the sale of the best players is still necessary to keep Leeds above board. In the last couple of seasons, the likes of Jermaine Beckford, Max Gradel, Bradley Johnson and Jonny Howson have all moved on to pastures new. This summer, it was the turn of captain and talisman Robert Snodgrass to desert the ship, joining Leeds’s apparent parent club Norwich for a fee of £3 million.

Snodgrass’s departure, along with the failed takeover bid has caused a certain level of despondency among the supporters. The takeover in itself is a joke, indeed news regarding its progress had been sparse all summer, before word got through that the bid had fallen through. Although it is reportedly back on, the club still remains in the hands of Ken Bates going into the new season, a situation that everyone connected with the club had hoped would not be the case. The lack of development on the takeover almost caused Neil Warnock to walk away, which would have left Leeds seriously struggling.

It’s not all doom and gloom though and in fairness to Warnock, he’s pulled out his usual trick and worked wonders on a limited budget. The sale of Snodgrass, and also Adam Clayton and Andy Lonergan funded an entire squad revamp that ensures almost the entire first team will be different personnel to last season. Paddy Kenny has been reunited with his favourite manager to play between the sticks and this is a positive sign given his form in the 2010/11 Championship season when QPR got promoted. Lee Peltier, Jason Pearce and Adam Drury have all arrived to form a new back four with youngster Tom Lees who was the pick of Leeds’s side last season. Defence was the main area where the Whites suffered last season, conceding goals with a worrying regularity, but Warnock appears to have addressed this problem and you’d be surprised to see Leeds as shaky at the back again next season.

Even in the days of Jonny Howson and Bradley Johnson, Leeds always looked lightweight through the middle of the park, but the arrival of Jamaican enforcer Rodolph Austin has ensured this won’t be the case in 2012/13 and he is fast on his way to achieving cult hero status at Elland Road. David Norris and Paul Green appear shrewd purchases on paper and Luke Varney’s performances in pre-season and the Capital One Cup suggests he will have a big part to play down the left hand side. The question marks remain up front. Ross McCormack’s future is still up in the air with his contract due up in a year, but the player has suggested he wants to stay at Elland Road and the fans certainly want last year’s top marksman to lead the line in the coming campaign. Luciano Becchio will start up front, but he looked short of form and fitness last season and needs to recapture his previous best to remind everyone of why he’s so revered around these parts of West Yorkshire.

You’d expect Warnock to make a couple of new additions before August ends, the squad still lacks depth, especially up front, while a touch of stardust ala Robert Snodgrass is needed to challenge at the top. The wildcard signing of maverick El-Hadji Diouf could prove to be a masterstroke in this department, but the fans haven’t exactly warmed to him while nobody knows whether Diouf’s temperament will last five minutes, let alone a whole season. The opening game against Wolves will be an interesting test of Leeds’s promotion credentials, especially against a side just relegated from the Premier League. The next home game sees Blackburn travel to Elland Road as well, so Warnock has to negate a tough start to get the Whites on track.

Everyone talks about Warnock’s reputation in winning promotions, indeed they seem to be his speciality. You have to wonder whether this could be a bridge too far even for his magical abilities as Leeds seem to be behind their promotion rivals in terms of ambition and spending power. However, the current Leeds squad now has more than a passing resemblance to the one Warnock assembled at QPR two years ago, with plenty of grit and determination amongst a sprinkling of quality on display at the club. Automatic promotion may be out of the Whites’ grasp, but you’d hope for a playoff challenge at the very least. Warnock famously told Nigel Clough when his Derby side won 2-0 at Elland Road ‘you’ll never see a Neil Warnock or a Leeds United side play like this again’ and you can only hope he’s right!

Brendan Rodgers promises transfer prudence

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has stated that he plans to be prudent in the transfer market this summer.

The Northern Irish manager has added Joe Allen and Fabio Borini to his Reds squad this summer so far, and is still eager to strengthen his contingent.

However, with predecessor Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli in mind, Rodgers has expressed his intent to be sensible in the search for new players.

“You have to spend money but not throw it around,” explained Rodgers. “In professional and social life, I like to get value. That is just my nature and my upbringing. I won’t pay anything at all costs, absolutely not,” The Telegraph quote Rodgers as saying.

“There have to be certain factors to make a player want to come and play for you. Unfortunately for people, money distorts the reality.

“I prefer the hungry player and those that want to succeed. Of course they will earn good money – and they will get their value and worth if they perform. I also understand that it is about two things for some players – game time and money.

“Signing for Liverpool should be the beginning. If you look at the history of the club, it is about hungry players, coming in from the lower leagues, from clubs in Scotland and Ireland, and working their way up.

“Talent aligned with hard work takes you a long way. I just want to maintain that spirit within the club,” he concluded.
