Liverpool fans react to Minamino loan links

Southampton have reportedly made enquiries into the potential loan signing of Liverpool winger Takumi Minamino, according to talkSPORT.

The Japan international spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan with the Saints and scored two goals in ten appearances for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side as they finished 15th in the Premier League table.

It appears as though he’s made a good impression on Southampton, who are reportedly keen to agree a deal to sign Minamino for another spell at St Mary’s this term.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for the 26-year-old at this stage of the transfer window as Jurgen Klopp prepares for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Minamino has been hailed as a ‘lively character’ by Football Insider pundit Kevin Campbell but has struggled to make his mark at Anfield, scoring just four times in 31 appearances and being limited to four Premier League starts for the Reds since joining in January 2020.

Plenty of Liverpool supporters took to social media to issue their thoughts on Southampton’s rumoured interest in signing Minamino, with some disparity among the reactions.

Arif makes an immediate impression

John Ward reports on the second day of the Championship match between Worcestershire and Glamorgan at New Road

John Ward at Worcester18-Jul-2008Glamorgan 136 for 4 (Rees 59*) trail Worcestershire 457 for 8 (Smith 99, Davies 83, Mitchell 78, Solanki 69, Moore 57) by 321 runs
ScorecardAfter conceding a total of 457 to Worcestershire, Glamorgan found their top-order batting shattered by a remarkable spell of genuine pace bowling from the home side’s overseas debutant, Imran Arif. In his first six overs in first-class cricket, the 24-year-old former Yorkshire Academy bowler, born in Kashmir and with a Pakistani passport, ripped out three top-order wickets to give his team a fair chance of winning this match – weather permitting. In the morning, Worcestershire continued very capably from their overnight score of 307 for 4. Overnight batsmen Ben Smith and Steven Davies again had to face some good deliveries early on from Jason Gillespie – who again had no luck – but otherwise they had no problem in taking control of the bowling. Davies, who played some superb off drives in particular, dominated the partnership, gaining steadily on Smith, and one wondered if he might beat him to the century. In the event, neither was to reach the landmark. Smith moved smoothly through the nineties, with Davies about 20 behind, until he reached 99. Then came an unexpectedly awkward delivery just outside the off stump from the persevering seamer James Harris, that bounced at some pace and, caught in two minds, Smith appeared to decide too late not to play it and was caught at first slip. The pair had added 143 for the fifth wicket, and Davies soon followed, driving a hard catch straight at cover, where Gareth Rees held it at the second attempt. After lunch, Kabir Ali made 12 before being caught by Mark Wallace at the wicket down the leg side, sweeping at the left-arm spinner Dean Cosker, and by now Worcestershire were looking for a declaration. This was not immediately obvious, as Simon Jones bats the same way in most circumstances. His 25 off 23 balls was very much block-and-slog, containing as it did four sixes, a single, and 18 dot balls. He got off the mark with a six off none other than Gillespie, over long-on, and followed with three more off Cosker, the biggest being over cow corner over the trees into the car park. Going for a fifth, he was held off a skier near the midwicket boundary.Worcestershire immediately declared, with Gareth Batty undefeated with a sedate 18. Their 457 for 8 was their highest total of the season to date. Harris and Cosker took three wickets each, with Alex Wharf the most disappointing bowler, going for more than five an over.Richard Grant began Glamorgan’s reply positively, with some good strokes and some fortuitous ones, mostly off Jones, who was quick but a little erratic at times. At the other end Kabir bowled five tight overs for five runs before Rees off drove him superbly for four. At 42, Grant (27) was strangled down the leg side off Jones, and soon after Imran was called upon to bowl his first over for the first time. He managed two balls before a drizzle started and an early tea was called. It took almost two hours for him to complete that over, and he showed some impressive pace. He struck in his third over, as David Hemp (3) flashed outside the off stump and edged a catch to the keeper. Michael Powell soon followed, after a handsome cover drive for four, also caught by the keeper, a harder one at the second attempt, diving to his right. Two balls later, Jamie Dalrymple no doubt hoped to get away with four leg-byes; unfortunately for him, he was instead adjudged lbw without scoring, and Glamorgan were in trouble at 56 for 4. Imran had taken three wickets in 11 balls; in his spell, he took 3 for 22 in six overs. Not wanting to burn him out, Vikram Solanki rested him after this, and this enabled Rees and Mark Wallace to bat with considerable freedom, the former running to his fifty off 105 balls, after a slow start. It was surprising that the captain did not give Imran even two more overs before the belated close of play – a combination of rain and an abysmal over rate – as by the close the pair had added a further 80 runs with little difficulty.

Albie Morkel, the South Africa allrounder, is confident that his side have what it takes to secure the forthcoming one-day series against England and make it a tour to remember.Morkel, older brother of Morne, missed the 2-1 Test series win but is keen to ensure South Africa end their already impressive tour of England on a high. South Africa’s first task is a Twenty20 next Wednesday, followed by five ODIs.”We’ve been playing some good one-day cricket, we were number one in the world earlier this year and we’re a proud nation,” said Morkel. “For us to come over here and win a Test series and a one-day series in England would be a big achievement and we’re all really keen to do that.”Morkel is an entirely different cricketer from his younger brother Morne, a versatile and primarily one-day player who has experienced English conditions while playing for Durham in this year’s Twenty20 Cup. He already has form against England, too: his 20-ball 43 and 2 for 12 helped notch a comfortable win for South Africa in last year’s ICC World Twenty20.”I’ve tried to keep myself fit during my time off and played a couple of games for Durham and then after that club cricket, but adapting to international cricket again is going to be my big challenge irrespective of the conditions,” he admitted. “Getting used to the intensity that international players play at again is going to be my biggest step.”The rest of the guys [one-day specialists] have been busy back home and they might be a bit rusty to begin with but they’ve got three warm-up games to get it right so hopefully we’ll be alright for the start of the series.”Morkel warmed up for the one-day series with a useful allround performance against a PCA Masters XI at Wormsley, cracking 35 off 21 balls before picking up 3 for 29.

James Pearce gives Liverpool transfer latest

Liverpool could still make an attacking signing if certain players leave in the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Quiet summer at Liverpool

While the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have spent big this summer, the Reds have had a low-key window.

Ibrahima Konate remains Liverpool’s only new signing, while Gini Wijnaldum is yet to be replaced after his move to Paris Saint-Germain.

It remains to be seen whether any news faces will be brought in, but Pearce has given an update on the current situation.

The Latest: Pearce provides key update

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic after Liverpool’s 3-0 win away to Norwich on Saturday, the journalist said that Xherdan Shaqiri or Divock Origi leaving could lead to some transfer activity, particularly if the latter moves on. He outlined:

“As I’ve written a few times it all depends what happens with outgoings. If Shaqiri and Origi both leave then I’d expect LFC to bring in an attacker. I asked Klopp about the midfield yesterday and he’s adamant he has enough cover.

“With AFCON on the horizon, I do think the squad needs another Jota type signing. My info is that if as expected Shaqiri goes he’s unlikely to be directly replaced as they see Elliott having his minutes. If Origi left too then I think LFC would be active in the market.”

The Verdict: One more addition needed

Liverpool’s squad looks strong, as shown by them beating Norwich comfortably without Andy Robertson, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Roberto Firmino starting, but a new signing would still be welcome.

Greater attacking depth would help ease the workload of the current players, giving Jurgen Klopp extra options in the final third throughout the season.

It is slightly frustrating that Wijnaldum seemingly won’t be replaced, but if Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain stay fit, that issue will be somewhat alleviated.

Duas coisas emperravam as conversas: o alto salário do zagueiro e o quanto o Vasco iria pagar.

Wolves make Nikola Milenkovic enquiry

Bruno Lage’s start to life as Wolves manager hasn’t been an easy one.

The Portuguese coach hasn’t been able to spend too freely in the transfer market and then oversaw a defeat during his first competitive game in the hot seat.

What’s the word?

If Wolves’ 1-0 loss to Leicester on Saturday told us anything, it’s that the Old Gold still desperately need to bring in some new faces in the transfer market.

Fortunately, Fosun are planning on doing exactly that.

According to Sky Sports, the Molineux outfit are keen on signing two defenders based in Italy; Takehiro Tomiyasu at Bologna and Nikola Milenkovic at Fiorentina.

With Tomiyasu preferring a move to Spurs, we want to focus on the latter, a Serbian centre-half who Wolves have reportedly made an enquiry to sign.

Big upgrade

After Wolves had to field Max Kilman and Romain Saiss at centre-back on Saturday afternoon, it’s evident that Lage is in need of some more recruits.

The former was a player tipped to leave under Nuno Santo while Saiss is thought to be an expendable asset in the club’s bid to sell players this summer.

The versatile Moroccan hasn’t been at his best for a while now as he threw in some poor individual displays last season.

Sadly, he wasn’t really at the races in pre-season either, putting in a dismal showing against Celta Vigo where he gave away a penalty.

Signing Milenkovic, therefore, would give them an instant upgrade.

Speaking about the colossal 6 foot 5 defender in the past, journalist Dejan Stankovic compared him to one of the best we’ve ever seen in the Premier League.

“Milenkovic is better than Vidic with the ball at his feet, and he is much calmer on the field,” Stankovic began. “He is the most talented centre-back Serbia have had since Vidic, and they definitely have one thing in common – both are fearless.”

That’s quite the appraisal for a player who’s caught the eye in Serie A. He won three aerial duels per game last term while completing 86% of his passes.

Both statistics were greater than Saiss who succeeded with 81.2% of his passes and won 2.6 aerial duels a match.

He’s proven to be somewhat of a liability over the last 12 months and if Wolves have desires of breaking into the top half of the table again, they will need to find a suitable alternative.

Milenkovic should be that man.

The tour includes two four-day games in Pretoria, starting August 8, followed by three one-dayers.Making a comeback from injury is Marshall Ayub, the Under-19 batsman. Announcing the squad at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday, Rafiqul Alam, the chief selector, said Ayub had fully recovered from the knee injury which kept him out for a year.”Marshall is now fully fit to play competitive cricket and has been practising with the academy players for the last one and a half months,” Alam said. The squad doesn’t include any of the Bangladesh A cricketers currently in England. “We picked the best side from the available 19 academy players as six of them are travelling with the Bangladesh A team in England,” Alam said. “We excluded the players touring in England as getting a South African visa for them from England would be difficult.”Shakil Kasem, the head of the development committee, said such tours are important to cover for the shortcomings of the domestic structure in the country. He added that former and current national players like Mohammad Rafique, Khaled Mashud and Mohammad Ashraful will interact with the squad on August 2, two days before departure.”It is the breeding ground. The next four-five years is very important for us because we have to produce some quality players to fill the gap,” Kasem said. “As our domestic competitions are not organised enough, where will these players get seasoned before entering the international stage? So we have to concentrate more on the academy team.”
