Players ask for patience but hope issues can be settled this week

New Zealand’s cricket players have asked for patience and understanding from the public in their dispute with New Zealand Cricket

Lynn McConnell21-Oct-2002New Zealand’s cricket players have asked for patience and understanding from the public in their dispute with New Zealand Cricket. They said they were hoping to reach agreement with NZC within the week. The parties resume negotiations in Wellington tomorrow. The New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association (NZCPA) today released their response to New Zealand Cricket’s (NZC) offer made to them last week. They have also taken the step of releasing their background document for the claim to the public.NZPCA representative Rob Nichol said today: “We want to ensure the public of New Zealand that what will result will be in the best interests of cricket in New Zealand both in the short and long term.”This is a hard process. It is one which tests everyone who is involved. We ask for patience and understanding while we try and resolve matters in a professional and timely manner,” he said. The talks will also resolve the CPA claims that NZC chief executive Martin Snedden broke the bargaining protocol by releasing NZC’s offer and background paper to the public.A claim that Snedden has denied. The CPA has called for mediation on that issue.”What the documentation shows is that there are some differences in the philosophies of the two parties and how the relationship should work,” Nichol said.”Both parties place different levels of priority and importance on the role the players play in that relationship.”We have discussed at length during negotiations the New Zealand Cricket Bargaining Teams (sic) perspective and our own. We believe that both parties understand and respect the position of the other.”Somewhere in between lies the middle ground and that is more than likely where an agreement will be found,” Nichol said.”The parties are agreed on a substantial number of the issues requiring resolution. In respect of the outstanding issues the NZCPA is aiming to provide the NZC bargaining team with a counter offer,” he added. However, he did say there were some key issues which required discussion and agreement before the NZCPA could be in a position to provide a meaningful and responsible counter offer.”The key issue is reaching agreement on the mechanism that will be used to both calculate and forecast the income figures from which any player payment pool will be calculated.”Until we have achieved this it is difficult to calibrate any offer and ensure the reasonableness of it,” he said.

Ex-Newcastle defender not fussed by Mario Lemina failure

Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has told The Transfer Tavern that he would not have brought Mario Lemina to the club after the Magpies missed out on his signature.

Lemina recently joined Nice from Southampton after spending last season out on loan at Fulham.

However, prior, he had been strongly linked with a move to Newcastle, with the MailOnline claiming club staff managed to convince owner Mike Ashley to revive talks for the player after he initially pulled out due to concerns surrounding age.

Considering that, it appears that Lemina was a midfielder manager Steve Bruce really wanted. Howey, though, does not think the Magpies boss should be losing too much sleep over it.

“I didn’t think Lemina was a good buy if I’m being brutally honest,” the ex-Newcastle centre-back said. “No disrespect, but do you want to buy a player that’s not wanted by a club which you’re supposed to be a little bit better than?

“Listen, he’s very, very talented. But when you’re under the cosh and you need your players to dig in, and every single one of them, there is the accusation that he goes missing. I wouldn’t have brought him in.”

You would now expect Newcastle to quickly move on as they continue to be linked with a host of other midfielders.

According to The Athletic, the Tyneside outfit have an interest in the likes of Jens Cajuste and Hamza Choudhury.

Governo do Rio caminha para fazer nova licitação do Maracanã

O governo do Rio ainda confirma.

Gold drops enticing Spurs update involving Tomiyasu

Speaking in a football.london Q&A, reliable correspondent Alasdair Gold has shared ‘further good news’ for Spurs involving transfer target Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Lowdown: Spurs closing in?

Tottenham have been targeting a move for the Japan international since the start of July, originally having a £12.9m (€15m) bid, plus an extra £2.6m (€3m) in add-ons, rejected by Bologna (Sky Sports).

The Athletic then reported that Spurs were closing in on a deal for the versatile defender and finalising terms on an agreement worth around £15 million plus add-ons.

While reports died down soon after, Gold shared news last week from Tomiyasu’s side – with the journalist claiming those close to the deal were ‘confident’ that a Lilywhites move ‘will be agreed’ after his involvement in the Olympics (football.london Q&A).

The Latest: Gold drops another Tomiyasu update…

Reiterating what he said last week, Gold still expects Spurs to come back in for Tomiyasu with his part in the Tokyo games now finished.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sharing ‘further good news’, the journalist has also relayed that the 22-year-old’s ankle injury has now cleared up – meaning he could be match fit in time for the new season if he does indeed sign for Tottenham.

“He’s just finished his time at the Olympics with Japan and some people involved in the deal on his side told me a few days ago that they were confident he would become a Tottenham player this window,” Gold explained (via football.london).

“Let’s see whether they now push that through. It’s not huge money we’re talking about in relation to the Romero deal as I’d be surprised if they don’t.

“Japan are now done at the Olympics following their defeat to Mexico in the bronze medal match. In further good news, that ankle injury from earlier in the tournament appears to have now cleared up.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

Tomiyasu’s possible signing for Spurs has been on the cards since mid-way through last month and it’s high time sporting director Fabio Paratici got it done.

The young defender can operate as both a centre-back and full-back, potentially killing two birds with one stone for new manager Nuno Espirito Santo – adding depth in multiple positions all for a relatively meagre potential fee.

Cristian Romero’s signing is just one of two defensive additions Spurs would, ideally, like to add this summer (football.london) – and we believe Tomiyasu should certainly be next.

In other news: Bid made – Tottenham have now lodged offer to sign player with ‘gigantic buzz’, find out more here.

Ponting impressed with Test squad's depth

Australia’s series victory was not as emphatic as they had hoped but Ricky Ponting was pleased with the long list of contributors to the 2-0 result over West Indies

Australia’s series victory was not as emphatic as they had hoped but Ricky Ponting was happy with the long list of contributors to the 2-0 result over West Indies. Matthew Hayden was unable to play any of the Tests due to a lingering achilles tendon problem and Stuart MacGill departed mid-tour, leaving Australia with an unfamiliar-looking line-up.They were already in transition mode following a host of key retirements in the past 18 months, but Ponting said the efforts of the replacement players gave him confidence the team’s future was in good hands. Beau Casson debuted in Barbados and picked up three wickets in the second innings to help seal a 87-run victory and Simon Katich made two centuries in the series, which was his first international outing since 2005.”It’s given an opportunity for some of our younger players in Australia to show what they’ve got and I think all the guys who have been given an opportunity in the last 12 months have stood up and done a really great job,” Ponting said after the game. “You look at this series, Simon Katich has been terrific for us at the top of the order, and Phil Jaques bounced back to form in this game.”Beau Casson makes his debut and takes wickets for us on the last day, which is what you need from a spinner. So all the guys who have come into the side can hold their head up high and say that they’ve done a really good job for the team over the last few weeks.”Ponting is enjoying having so many different people in the squad. “I actually said when some of the more senior players moved on that I felt it was going to be one of the more exciting periods in my career to have some new, fresh faces around the team,” Ponting told AFP. “I thought it was going to be exciting, and it has been, it has been great.”I have enjoyed having guys making their debuts and guys who have played a handful of Tests in the side because I feel I have a lot to offer to those guys by way of experience and know-how in certain situations in games. If I can go and say one thing to them that is going to help them out in situations in games, I feel that’s my job.”West Indies scared Australia on the fifth day when, despite chasing what would have been a world-record 475, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo anchored a remarkably strong effort from a side not renowned for its tenacity against the odds. It was typical of the fight the hosts displayed throughout the series and Ponting was impressed.”This game here has gone pretty much to plan for us but the West Indies have got a lot of positives out of this as well,” he said. “The way they attacked the run chase in the second innings, I thought showed a lot of heart and a lot of character. Luckily for us we batted well enough in the second innings to set up a really big lead.”That advantage was based around 157 from Katich, who was named Man of the Match, and his strong tour resulted in him finishing second to Ponting on Australia’s series run tally with 319 at 63.80. Katich enjoyed being back in the Test set-up after a lengthy absence and he is philosophical about his likely demotion for Australia’s next Test, against India in October.”If Matty Hayden hadn’t have got injured I probably would have been pouring some drinks,” Katich said. “Obviously if Matty gets fit he’ll be back in, because he’s a champion. It’s just nice to be back in the squad and I’ve really enjoyed playing here.”Ponting said some of the conditions the team had experienced in the Caribbean would be useful preparation for India, and the side also learned it needed to be more patient. “There are lots of positives there for us, but we’re probably not demolishing sides like we might have done two years ago,” he said. “We are grinding teams down and winning Test matches, and we’re doing it well.”It’s the style of play more than anything else. You have to accept that the game may go into the fifth day and you have to be patient. You have to grind an innings out, or in the middle of a bowling spell, not try to attack too much.”

Apesar do desejo do treinador, o Inter será forçado a mexer.

– O Roberson voltou a treinar hoje (sexta).
