Me deu oportunidades aqui.

Duckworth/Lewis and bad batting make for poor bedfellows

A culmination of poor batting, poor wicket and the dreaded Duckworth/Lewis method saw Hampshire Hawks fall to the fourth successive defeat in the Norwick Union League at Derby on Saturday. The Derby saga started on Friday when the team were told not to travel up to the Midland county until word was received as to the fitness of the ground. Hampshire coach Jimmy Cook and local umpire Budd Hill held the inspection and then telephoned the ECB, who after deliberations suggested that Hampshire travelled. So on Saturday, the teams, umpires, spectators all arrived for a prompt start!!!Although conditions following heavy thunderstorms were not ideal, Hampshire Hawks chose to bat but they struggled off the seaming ball on the damp green wicket, and lost 7 wickets for 50 before the first stoppage for rain. Apart from a run out when Crawley drifted down the wicket at the non-strikers end, the wickets belonged to the seamers, Dominic Cork was unplayable and he conceded just 9 runs from his 8 overs, 6 of them wides.Five overs per side were lost when another shower sent the players scurrying for cover. Nic Pothas saved a complete disaster with a polished half century, first sharing a 51 run stand with Shaun Udal and then a more unlikely 42 undefeated atand with Alan Mullally.Much scratching of heads around the ground as the Duckworth/Lewis came into effect, asking Derbyshire Scorpions to score 137 in 40 overs to win, some 6 runs less than Hampshire had scored. Even a phone call to Mr.Duckworth confirmed the scorers calculations as correct. The Scorpions innings owed much to their overseas star Michael diVenuto, as wickets fell at steady intervals. Hampshire used five seamers, with Shaun Udal resigned to a fielding roll, and at 100 for 7 the home side looked in trouble, Skipper Will Kendall bowled out his top bowlers early in an attempt to find a fginal breakthrough, but the Scorpions scraped home with 5 balls remaining, and left the Hawks cursing the D/L method.

India dominate England comprehensively

For a nation that heaps expectations on its cricketers, India’sdominance over England at Colombo was hugely satisfying, tosay the least

Erapalli Prasanna23-Sep-2002For a nation that heaps expectations on its cricketers, India’sdominance over England at Colombo was hugely satisfying, tosay the least. Coming after the equally exciting win at Lord’s inthe final of the NatWest Trophy, this game just goes to provethat India are now a daunting one-day outfit, and if anything willinstill fear into the hearts of their opponents, it is the battingthat Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag showed off on Sundayevening.
© ReutersGanguly, in my opinion, has started enjoying his cricket more oflate, but Sunday must have provided more than the usual shareof enjoyment and entertainment as he sat gleefully at the otherend while Sehwag went berserk. A smiling, encouraging captainis always a big asset, especially to the younger players, for hetakes the pressure off by a few opportune words.Once Ganguly and Sehwag had added 192 runs for the firstwicket in double-quick time, the match was virtually in the bag.Sehwag was the first to be dismissed, but not before he hadsealed a knock that is best described as inspirational. Hisdaredevil style of hitting through the line and on the rise -andhis astounding talent at succeeding – is quite, quite remarkable.England’s bowlers, especially Andy Caddick, were perhaps guiltyof trying to bowl too fast at Sehwag, for the increased paceonly made the youngster’s job easier, enabling him to use thepace to his own advantage. On a belter of a track like thePremadasa, there is little point in just trundling up and down, and more variations must be tried to throttle the batsmen.Sehwag in particular has a tendency to play a few loose shotsearly in his innings, and England’s bowlers failed woefully tocapitalise on that. With the line and length they were bowling, they only had a chance to get Sehwag if they obtained somemovement off the track. But as I said, given the pitchconditions, that was not likely to happen.Nasser Hussain could really not have anticipated such anonslaught, and in fact he would have been quite happy once hisbatsmen had put 269 on the board. Given India’s earlybreakthroughs, it was quite a feat by England to reach thatcompetitive total. Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan bowled brilliantfirst spells, and the early exit of Marcus Trescothick – always apivotal man for England – must have given the Indians a hugeboost.Hussain got out to a really atrocious stroke, and his battingmade the Indian quicks look twice as fast as they really were. That shot was not at all warranted in the situation, and if this ishow England is going to play in Australia, I am not sure they willbe able to make too many dents on the opposition. But I did likethe attitude and approach of young Ian Blackwell, refreshinglydifferent and positive as compared to his experiencedcolleagues.I must say, though, that India’s main spinners were a hugedisappointment. Both Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh areexperienced enough at the international level, and there is littleexcuse for not being on top of their game, especially on subcontinental tracks that always hold promise for spinners. I havealways emphasised the importance of turning and flighting theball, and neither Kumble nor Harbhajan managed to do enough ofthat on the day.On current form, the South Africans will surely find the Indianbatting too hot to handle. With Sehwag and Ganguly striking topform, there isn’t much any bowling attack can do, and the onlything India must guard against is complacency – a quality thatseems to creep in often, especially after a hugely one-sidedgame.

Newcastle transfer update on Lookman

The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas has claimed that Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Ademola Lookman in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Tight budget

As per Douglas, the St. James’ Park faithful have been operating on a ‘shoestring’ budget, amid their arbitration case against the Premier League being delayed until 2022.

This means that they will likely not be able to spend big fees on players, and as such, will be looking for potential bargains in the market.

The Latest: Lookman offered

Writing in his piece for The Chronicle, Douglas has claimed that the North East club have been offered Lookman, along with a number of other teams in the top flight.

The RB Leipzig ace, who is also interesting Southampton, is currently rated at £10m, which may be too much for the Tyneside club, despite Steve Bruce being a fan of his.

The Verdict: Sign

Lookman could well be an exciting signing for the Magpies, as he proved his qualities with some of his performances while on loan at Fulham in the 2020/21 season, with Toon legend Alan Shearer dubbing him as a ‘fantastic’ player back in April.

Being English, he helps fill the home-grown quota too, and at 23 years of age, still has a lot of potential to develop even further.

Thus, £10m could well turn out to be a snip, so long as NUFC can afford it.

Waughs under pressure – Hussain

COLOMBO – Australia has gifted England an Ashes leverage point byleaving Steve and Mark Waugh out of the one-day cricket side, accordingto England captain Nasser Hussain.

Michael Donaldson22-Sep-2002COLOMBO – Australia has gifted England an Ashes leverage point byleaving Steve and Mark Waugh out of the one-day cricket side, accordingto England captain Nasser Hussain.Hussain, in Colombo for the Champions Trophy, suggested the Waugh twins’places in the Australian Test team were tenuous – something the Englishcould exploit. The England skipper said he was dubious when he first heard the veteranpair had been left out of the Australian one-day team but could now seethe logic to it.”When I first heard it, I thought ‘that’s a bit harsh … it sounds abit early’,” Hussain said.”But then I came over here and saw the Australian one-day squad and theyall looked a young, athletic, fresh sort of side and I thought ‘it’s nota bad idea, they’re going to be a good side for a little while yet andit probably was a decent move’.”As a result he sees the brothers under a little bit of pressure to holddown their Test spots.”With the Test side … to be honest, we’ve got enough problems of ourown without worrying about the Australia side,” he said.”But whoever we come up against we have to believe that the nightbefore, or the day of, the game they’ll be nervous.”Whether it be the Waugh brothers or whoever’s taking their place.”At least there’s something to work on there now, the Australians havegiven us that.”If [the Waugh brothers] play they’ll be under a little bit of pressurebecause some people will be saying why have we gone back to the Waughbrothers.”Or, with whoever comes, if it’s a younger lad, he’s going to be under abit of pressure because he’s taking Mark or Steve Waugh’s place.”Hussain also believes the English will be better equipped to deal withShane Warne this summer thanks to the coaching of Duncan Fletcher.”We’ve had good success playing against Harbhajan Singh and AnilKumble,” he said.”It will be our greatest challenge because our record against Warne ispoor.”But there’s no reason, if we’ve played Harbhajan and Kumble so well, that we can’t go over and play Warne well.”The main difference Duncan Fletcher’s made is technically, hisunderstanding of batting.”Biomechanically, where people pick up their bat, where they’re going tohit the ball, playing of spin and angles, where you can sweep and whereyou can’t sweep.”He understands, more than any coach I’ve been associated with, theactual mechanics of the game of cricket.”That has really helped our game.”

Rangers miss out on Harry Wilson

Rangers had been tipped to sign Harry Wilson earlier in the summer but Steven Gerrard won’t be reunited with the Welshman at Ibrox after he completed a move to Fulham recently.

What’s the word?

Rangers were heavily linked with the Liverpool winger in 2018, with reports claiming that Gerrard was very keen to add him to his squad having managed him during his spell working in the academy at Anfield.

When it became clear that the Reds were keen to cash in on the 24-year-old permanently this summer after a number of loan spells away from the club, he was once again touted as a potential option for the Gers.

Former Rangers man Michael Ball tipped his old club to make a move for the Wales international earlier this year, saying: “Steven’s got that connection with him. He knows of him, so that personal relationship could be a bonus. The money, we’re not too sure what they have to spend, so it all depends if any players move out as well at Rangers.

“If [Alfredo] Morelos moves on, the big money that they’ll get would give Rangers the opportunity to bring Harry and maybe a few others in.”

Should Rangers have signed Wilson?

Wilson has regularly emphasised his class in loan spells away from Liverpool but has never really established himself as a regular in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, perhaps due to the world-class talent that the German has available to him at Anfield.

Last season saw Wilson join Cardiff City on loan and he impressed with his performances in the Championship, contributing seven goals and 11 assists in 37 appearances and averaging a solid 6.96 rating from WhoScored for his endeavours.

It is therefore no surprise that he has earned himself a permanent move to the Championship this summer, with Fulham paying £12m to sign him earlier this week as they look to secure an immediate return to the top flight.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

The “outstanding” winger – as hailed by Roy Keane – could have been an excellent addition to Rangers’ squad ahead of their upcoming Champions League qualifying campaign. Given Gerrard’s relationship with him, you could definitely argue that Ross Wilson should have acted faster to try and bring the Welshman to Ibrox this summer.
