Andersen can be Arsenal’s dream Luiz heir

Joachim Andersen is a target for Arsenal this summer transfer window…

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim the Lyon centre-back is likely to end up in North London with both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur battling it out for his signature after an impressive loan spell at Fulham this campaign.

Arch-rivals Spurs appear to be the clear favourites, whilst Europa League runners-up Manchester United have also been mooted with interest, but there is seemingly still a chance that he could end up at The Emirates.

The 25-year-old is likely to command a fee in the region of €23m (£20m) and the Ligue 1 outfit are said to be open to offers, with them not planning for his return ahead of pre-season.

Luiz replacement

This could be quite a shrewd piece of business from Mikel Arteta and Edu as they certainly need to bolster their side’s defence following the confirmed departure of David Luiz.

After two years at the Emirates Stadium, the 34-year-old will leave the club following the expiry of his contract, leaving a huge hole in the backline.

Andersen may well have been part of a side relegated from the big time this season but he was one of the few shining lights in Scott Parker’s side – evidently if three of the traditional top seven are mooted with interest.

Luiz, a renowned livewire, has been a very good ball-playing defender for the Gunners. For example, this season, his 83.5% passing accuracy and 3.6 long balls per game saw him rate out as one of Arteta’s best options.

As per WhoScored, the five-cap Denmark international recorded a respectable 5.8 successful long balls each outing and still brought home 81.4% accuracy, which was better than midfielders like Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ademola Lookman.

His form at Craven Cottage has earned a fair share of plaudits, with the 6 foot 4 centre-back being described as “absolutely sensational” by club legend Tony Gale and “magnificent” by the Mirror’s chief football writer John Cross.

For just £20m, there can’t be many better alternatives out there at such a bargain price, especially if Arsenal want to instantly get back on track next season.

Andersen just proved he can cut the mustard in the Premier League and with Arteta in need of a new option, Edu must look to secure him as he seems to be the dream replacement for Luiz, on the above evidence.

AND in other news, Edu could finally replace Ozil with Arsenal swoop for “exceptional” £18m-rated wizard…

England overwhelm Sri Lanka on day of more controversy

Today may have been a religious day in the sacred city of Kandy but it was far from a harmonious one as tempers flared on a dramatic third day

Charlie Austin09-Mar-2001Today may have been a religious day in the sacred city of Kandy but it was far from a harmonious one as tempers flared on a dramatic third day. England overwhelmed a distraught Sri Lanka side and now look certain to level the series tomorrow.Sri Lanka had begun the day with high hopes of wrapping up the England innings in the morning. It wasn’t to be as a combination of controversial umpiring decisions and excellent batting allowed England to add 87 runs for the sixth wicket and 41 for the last, which gave them a precious lead of 90 runs.

Disaster then struck for Sri Lanka as they lost three wickets in the first 13 balls of the innings. Darren Gough ripped out Marvan Atapattu for two and had Aravinda de Silva caught in the gully off his glove for one. It was the dismissal of Sanath Jayasuriya, however, that broke the back of the Sri Lankans.Jayasuriya had just watched his vice-captain depart in Gough’s aggressive first over and knew that his team needed an innings from their leader. He drove at Andrew Caddick’s first delivery and appeared to edge the ball into the ground. It ballooned up and Graham Thorpe took an athletic catch at third slip. The English players appealed and the Sri Lankan umpire BC Cooray gave Jayasuriya out after confirmation by Koertzen that the catch had been taken cleanly.Jayasuriya could not believe what was happening. He thought they would refer to the television umpire but, as Hanumant Singh, the match referee confirmed afterwards, catches can only be referred if there is doubt as to whether the ball was taken cleanly. Bump balls, he said, are a matter for the umpires.Jayasuriya lingered on his way back to the pavilion and threw his helmet in disgust and sat on the dressing room balcony fully padded as if he expected a reprieve at any moment. He became the latest player to be hauled into the match referee’s room after the close of play to receive a suspended suspension of two Test matches and two One-Day Internationals. He was also fined 60 per cent of his match fee.”The team are trying their best but unfortunately we cannot do anything about what is happening to us at the moment,” said Jayasuriya afterwards. Commenting on his own fate: “There was no luck at all for me – everyone can see the television replays, but I cannot comment on the decision.” Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore struggled for words, but said: “It was very tough to sit here and watch.”Soon after Jayasuriya’s dismissal, Kumar Sangakkara and Michael Atherton were involved in a verbal confrontation, which ended up with Atherton pointing his finger. Hanumant Singh admitted afterwards that he would be looking into the incident tomorrow. The ECB issued a statement afterwards, which said: “Mike Atherton was using his finger to make a point about a remark made to him by a Sri Lankan player. He was not abusive to the umpire.”Jayasuriya admitted afterwards that he was going to struggle to lift his players tomorrow: “When everything is not going your way, it is very difficult to pick up the morale, but we have to come back tomorrow and try to get a lead of 150, which would put England under pressure. Sangakkara is still there and we are hoping that he can get a big one.”

The day began well for England as Alec Stewart and Craig White added 87 priceless runs to overhaul the Sri Lankan lead and then, after the home team had taken three quick wickets after lunch, Robert Croft and Darren Gough added 41 more for the last wicket. After an early tea Gough’s fast bowling could not be faulted. He exploited Atapattu’s off stump weakness to perfection and then produced a brute of a delivery first up to Aravinda de Silva in his second over.Following the dismissal of Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara counter-attacked bravely, scoring 39 runs in 46 balls. It was electrifying batting and was only ended by a distinguished off cutter from White that Jayawardene played on to his stumps.Russel Arnold then added a further 39 runs with Sangakkara before Robert Croft snatched two further wickets to seal Sri Lanka’s fate in this match. Arnold was adjudged lbw as he padded up for 22 and Tillakaratne Dilshan was caught at slip without scoring. When asked about a previously arranged dinner engagement, a Sri Lankan player summed up the situation for his side perfectly: “I don’t think today is a good day.”

Villa’s owners want James Ward-Prowse signed

Aston Villa have been handed a transfer update on their pursuit of England and Southampton star James Ward-Prowse, and it should leave fans buzzing.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from The Guardian, Smith is keen on landing the midfielder this summer  – a move that would fit in with what the Villa boss recently had to say about the club’s transfer plans and signing Premier League proven players.

Now, Football Insider claim that “Aston Villa owners Wes Edens and Naseef Sawiris will throw their financial might behind the bid to lure James Ward-Prowse from Southampton.”

It’s added: “A Villa source has told Football Insider that billionaire owners Edens and Sawiris are backing Smith to the hilt for a third consecutive summer as they look to build on the club-record capture of Emiliano Buendia last week. The owners are keen for a deal to be finalised in time for the midfielder to be at the club’s Bodymoor Heath training ground for the start of pre-season.”

Dean Smith will be buzzing

As Southampton captain, and that too at only 26, the midfielder is the cornerstone of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, and it’s no surprise the Saints boss has waxed lyrical about him.

Speaking about Ward-Prowse’s influence, he said: “You have to walk out there and always be the role model of what we are standing for. When you see him running and him fighting for everything in every game then this is what a captain should do.

“Not speaking in the dressing room or telling people how it works, but showing it on the pitch how it works. For me, this is how a captain should be.”

The news that NSWE will be backing Smith to the hilt this summer with potential new signings, including getting a big-money deal for Ward-Prowse over the line, should be music to the ears of the Villa boss.

Smith showed last season in the Premier League that with the right kind of financial backing, he can work wonders – you only have to look at the signings of Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez and how they turned them into a team just outside the top ten to see that.

Having that same kind of commitment from the owners this time around is a recipe for success, and the Villa boss will be absolutely buzzing with this latest transfer update.

Meanwhile, Villa could deliver another Buendia masterclass with this star…

Wasim Akram, the great survivor

Till the very last minute, fast bowler Wasim Akram’s inclusion in the England-bound squad remained a matter of conjecture and suspense

Till the very last minute, fast bowler Wasim Akram’s inclusion in the England-bound squad remained a matter of conjecture and suspense. That he finally made it, apparently in the face of stiff opposition by the team captain, his one-time bosom pal Waqar Younis, has been attributed to the desperate, almost pathetic, efforts that he was forced to make on his own behalf. It was reported that he sought the intervention of various people, including his mentor Imran Khan, to achieve his cherished desire of a fourth tour of the island nation on whose greens the game of cricket had originated. This running-from-pillar-to-post mode of selection by one who has been termed as an all-time great fast bowler in the annals of cricket, makes for sorry reading. In the normal scheme of things, his unrivalled record of 400-plus wickets in both Test and one-day cricket, and his vast experience of English conditions (three tours, a World Cup and numerous years for his county Lancashire) would have made him an automatic choice for the tour. Also, Pakistan, seeking to avenge its recent 0-1 loss to England in the home series would have preferred the strongest possible side, and dropping Akram would have been tantamount to neglecting a `force-multiplier’ weapon in its armoury. All’s well that ends well, goes the clichéd saying, but it must be recorded that the doubts and uncertainty surrounding his berth had little to do with Akram’s undoubted cricketing skills. Many non-cricketing reasons were cited in a bid to keep him out. Maybe it was Akram’s offhand treatment of Younis that still rankled with the latter. Or it may be those numerous instances when various captains felt that when he was not leading the side, Akram was not only not giving of his best but also distracting other, younger and more impressionable members of the team. There is also this feeling in the PCB boardrooms that with Moin axed in a bid to make a few examples, Akram remains the last vestige of player power that has dogged Pakistan cricket through the ’90s.

Anyway, now that Akram has survived – albeit after considerable humiliation – it remains to be seen how well he does in England. Despite the weight of his performance over the last decade and a half, it would be extremely difficult for Akram to maintain his place in the outfit if he fails to produce anything less than really high-calibre stuff.Akram, however, is a great survivor. In the last eight years or so, this champion all-rounder had to undergo many a setback and ignominy – charges of ball-tampering (1992), rebellion against his captaincy (1993), allegations of match-fixing (1994 to date), debilitating effects of diabetes (1997 to date).Almost always he emerged stronger than before. Despite having 16 years of a fast-bowling career behind him, that this most `natural’ of southpaws is still a force to reckon with is reflected from his performance in the year 2000. At St. John’s, Antigua, he took a 10-wicket haul against the West Indies – it would have been a match-winning effort had a couple of umpiring decisions not deprived Pakistan of a much-coveted first series triumph in the Caribbean. Then he had a big hand in Pakistan winning its first Asia Cup, and immediately afterwards two back-to-back Man of the Match awards in Tests in Sri Lanka for his all-round performance. Pakistan ended up winner in both encounters. His fitness is not an issue at this point, for he seems to have recovered from his injuries and one has to believe him when he says that he is all fired up to do well in England. Clearly, if he were not fit he would not have gone to such great lengths to secure a place in the squad. So Wasim Akram, the `temperamental team man’ but a great performer nevertheless, has to do well to silence his many detractors. And, considering his track record, especially when he wants to make a point, that is bad news for England!

Crystal Palace linked to Eddie Nketiah

Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, as chairman Steve Parish plots a summer overhaul of his club’s first-team squad.

What’s the story?

Many changes are expected at Selhurst Park over the coming months following Roy Hodgson’s departure, and the 22-year-old could be one of the first arrivals in south London if he does decide to leave Arsenal.

Nketiah found chances limited with his boyhood club last season but has still attracted the attention of several Premier League sides, according to journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Fans will be buzzing

After impressing during several cameo appearances in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, the England Under-21 international found his chances limited last season.

He was restricted to just four Premier League starts as Mikel Arteta consistently favoured Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette at the top end of the pitch.

Nketiah did manage to bag a respectable six goals in all competitions, though, making decent use of his 29 outings which predominantly came in cup competitions.

His solid displays did enough for the Gunners to offer the £14.4 million rated gem a new contract, but it remains to be seen whether he sees his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium.

Romano reported that West Ham United and Watford are also interested in Nketiah ahead of the upcoming transfer window, whilst Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen are keen to sign him on a permanent deal too.

Although the youngster may not have the experience or prolific goalscoring record to back up his potential just yet, he’s shown glimpses of what he could achieve and a standout performance against Manchester City last year drew praise from Arteta.

“I want him to keep doing what he’s doing. The way he played last night against those players, in those difficult conditions, for me is extraordinary at his age,” said the Spanish tactician.

“He has an immense personality to play, confidence, he’s powerful and is developing in every area I think. I have a lot of faith in him.”

Christian Benteke has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal, yet Michy Batshuayi has rejoined parent club, Chelsea, leaving a big hole in the Eagles’ forward line.

Nketiah could be the perfect man to fill that void, and the Palace faithful will surely be hoping that Parish can get this deal over the line.

And, in other news…Get it done: Parish must sanction CPFC swoop for 19 y/o prodigy, fans will be buzzing
