Former Premier League manager Ian Holloway believes it is time that Jack Grealish was called up to the England squad – even in light of the recent good form of Dele Alli.

The likes of Grealish and Alli were among those who missed out on Gareth Southgate’s most recent squad as England confirmed their place at Euro 2020, with Holloway at a loss to explain why the Aston Villa man in particular has been overlooked to this point.

Grealish, who netted a superb curling effort at Old Trafford last weekend, is yet to make his senior international bow having clocked up seven caps for England’s Under-21s.

Discussing the chances of Grealish and Alli breaking into the squad on TalkSPORT, Holloway believes Grealish’s talents deserve recognition on the international stage.

He said: “I think he’s fantastic. I don’t want to bang his drum too much, but how we are overlooking him for that England lot, I’m reading their names and Jack – get in there, mate.

“I don’t think they have [left it too late to make the squad], I think Jack Grealish is so underrated, it’s unbelievable.

“I’ve always loved Dele Alli, and I’m loving what [Jose] Mourinho’s doing with him but for me, Jack Grealish – get in that team.”

Given Alli’s existing international experience and recent impressive form (with three goals in his last two games), the fact that Holloway holds Grealish in greater esteem demonstrates just how highly the ex-Crystal Palace boss rates him.

Grealish has netted five times since Villa’s promotion, with only Wesley scoring more often for Dean Smith’s side in the Premier League as the 24-year-old has shown few signs of being out of his depth at the top level.

Though Southgate may be well aware of his fine performance, he put Grealish’s omission down to the fact he has most recently taken up a role on the left wing, with rivals such as Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford difficult to dislodge at present.

Considering his versatility, it could be argued that he remains an option for the Three Lions, though being shifted out wide may be harming his international prospects regardless of his performance levels.

Leeds may be riding high, winning matches and playing great football, but that hasn’t stopped fans fearing the worst in regard to their promotion chances.

They’re 11 points clear of third-place Fulham having only conceded ten goals in 21 games and have impressively gained four more points than at the same stage last season.

Even though they have been without Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper in recent matches due to suspension and injuries they still look unbeatable, yet supporters are still worried that they won’t be able to see promotion through.

A stat comparing Leeds to previous promotion winners show that the Whites are well on track to reach the Premier League, as their 46 points from 21 games is better than what Norwich managed last season, and the same as Newcastle managed when they were promoted in 2017.

However, many fans believe it is still too early to be talking of promotion, and superstition means they think doing so will harm their team’s chances.

It is natural for supporters to feel as they do, but looking at the stats as well as performances shows that Leeds are in a very strong position, and there is little reason why they can’t see this form through until the end of the season.

There is strength in depth this time around. The likes of Helder Costa started the season slowly and though he rarely started at first, he is now proving his quality with a goal against Middlesbrough and an assist against Reading in recent games.

If Leeds can hold onto their best players in January they should have what it takes to continue winning matches, and slowly but surely fans may begin believing that they will reach the Premier League.

Leeds may have thrown away promotion last year but stats suggest that this time around things could be different.

Leeds United’s recruitment since Marcelo Bielsa took the reigns at the club has been nothing short of impressive. It’s hard to disagree when they sit top of the Championship standings a year after crashing out of the playoffs. That’s two top-three finishes under the Argentine.

And the west Yorkshire outfit could well be a Premier League side next term. If the season cannot be resumed, then the EFL will decide the final table via an unweighted points-per-game system which sees Leeds go up as champions – but this depends on the PL confirming that there will be relegations.

It means that this summer their moves in the transfer market will be huge as they can’t become a one-season wonder after a 16-year absence from the top-flight.

Just look at how things have gone for Aston Villa after they spent around £120m on new players yet find themselves embroiled in a relegation scrap.

This week The Athletic’s Phil Hay has shed some light on their plans and offered up potential targets. He said:

“A portion of the club’s transfer money and the budget set aside will be taken up by the conversion of loans into permanent deals. Leeds are already committed to signing Helder Costa permanently from Wolves. They are set on taking Jack Harrison from Manchester City and Illan Meslier from Lorient and have options to acquire both. They are also obligated to sign Jean-Kevin Augustin from RB Leipzig (for a fee in excess of £15 million) although that might be open to discussion if Augustin is in two minds about whether he wants the move. He hasn’t found his feet yet but he came with Bielsa’s blessing in January.

“It’s obvious that if Leeds can’t retain Ben White they’ll need another first-rate centre-back. They also have to make sure that they’re properly resourced at left-back. Manchester City’s Yan Couto, a right-sided Brazilian, is a player I’ve heard them strongly linked with.

“I’m told that the targets Leeds had before the pandemic haven’t changed. But nobody is quite sure what the post-COVID market will look like or how it will operate.”

He claims that the club will set aside money to try and keep hold of some of their successful loan stars such as Man City’s Jack Harrison and Lorient’s Illan Meslier. They are also, of course, obligated to buy Jean-Kevin Augustin and have to fork out for Helder Costa.

They could well try for Ben White too.

Interestingly, Hay also adds that they could go back to City to nab young Brazilian starlet Yan Couto on loan but most importantly, that their plans haven’t changed because of the pandemic.

It just remains to be seen what sort of market there is when – and if – football returns to normality.

The centre-back position will be one of Marcelo Bielsa’s biggest challenges ahead of next season as he faces the prospect of losing Gaetano Berardi and White, meaning only skipper Liam Cooper is the only senior option in the role.

وأوضحت أن ديست سيكون في حاجة إلى 48 ساعة للراحة على الأقل من أجل التعافي من حالة الالتواء، ومن ثم لن يكون جاهزًا لمواجهة هندوراس بعد غد.

وأفادت إنه رغم ذلك، فإن ديست يمكن أن يتعافى قبل مباراة برشلونة وإشبيلية يوم السبت المقبل، في الجولة الرابعة من بطولة الدوري الإسباني.

QPR chief executive Lee Hoos has not minced his words in reacting to the EFL’s decision to resume the Championship season on 20 June.

The EFL announced on Sunday evening that its highest division would resume later this month, subject to all safety guidelines being met, with hopes of playing the Championship play-off final in the last week of July. [via Sky Sports]

News of the English second tier’s planned restart comes just days after the Premier League announced that top-flight action is set to return on 17 June, but Hoops CEO Hoos is far from pleased with the EFL’s decision.

Giving his reaction to the club’s official website qpr.co.uk, he said: “I am absolutely stunned by this announcement, as is our Director of Football Les Ferdinand and our manager Mark Warburton.

“Incredibly, there has been absolutely no consultation with individual clubs nor with the Championship doctors’ working group by the divisional representatives – or anyone else in the Football League – regarding this matter. On top of that, we were only made aware of the statement 40 minutes before it was made public.

“Having spoken with Les and Mark, they share my views. We are vehemently opposed to this schedule. The players haven’t even returned to full-contact training at this moment and yet they are now expected to be in a position to play at a competitive level in just three weeks’ time.

“I have made our feelings known to the EFL and, having spoken with a number of CEOs at other Championship clubs, I am not a lone voice on this matter. We are absolutely appalled.”

As it stands, QPR are 13th in the Championship but still harbour very realistic hopes of finishing in a play-off place, just six points behind sixth-placed Preston with nine matches still to play (as per TransferMarkt). Therefore, the R’s still have a tangible incentive to resume rather than merely being left to play out the remainder of their season.

Despite the UK government approving the return of live sport behind closed doors from today, Hoos’ concerns about QPR returning to action on 20 June are understandable. His reservations about the players not being able to adequately get up to match speed by then, considering that they have yet to resume full contact training, are quite valid. Also, for Warburton to share similar concerns, as someone who works daily with the players on the training pitch, is significant.

Indeed, if Hoos is accurate in saying that the EFL took the decision to resume the Championship without even consulting key stakeholders, that reflects terribly on the league’s hierarchy.

Furthermore, QPR potentially face a stiffer challenge than most clubs in terms of players’ fitness and availability – Warburton has a modest squad size of 24 players, the fourth smallest in the division (as per TransferMarkt). Therefore, he can ill afford a glut of injuries or enforced absences when the season resumes.

While some Hoops fans might be eagerly looking forward to the return of live football, albeit without being able to attend matches, Hoos is quite justified in his “vehement” opposition to restarting the season in just 19 days’ time.
