Tottenham Hotspur’s frustrating start to the 2019/20 season went from bad to worse as they were thrashed 7-2 on their own patch by Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

A Champions League clash against the Bundesliga giants in their new stadium should have been an occasion to remember for the club, but it turned into a nightmare in the second half as the north London outfit collapsed and conceded three goals in five minutes in the latter stages of the contest.

While Jan Vertonghen started in defence, Christian Eriksen only had the chance to make a difference from the substitutes’ bench when he replaced Tanguy Ndombele – one of the only players on the night to receive any credit from Spurs supporters – in the 64th minute, but he failed to do so.

Both players looked dejected and had looks of anguish on their faces as they left the pitch at full-time, and you wonder whether the result could have an impact on their respective futures.

Vertonghen is reported to be in talks with Tottenham over a new contract with his current one due to expire next summer, although the north London outfit are seemingly unwilling to offer the 32-year-old more than a 12-month extension.

Meanwhile, Eriksen is in a similar boat to his Belgian teammate in terms of his deal expiring, but he appears determined to make his exit either in January or at the end of the season given he has rejected every offer he has had from Daniel Levy, as per Marca.

Roberto Firmino quietly dropped another master-class on Wednesday evening in the Champions League, including accomplishing something he has never done before at Liverpool.

The Reds suffered quite the scare at the hands of Red Bull Salzburg, surrendering a three-goal lead in the second half. Of course, Mohamed Salah popped up with the goods like he always does, but he couldn’t have done it without Firmino.

Liverpool’s mercurial ‘false nine’ has been lauded by fans and pundits alike this season, and it seems like he is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

For all the talk of the crazy Salzburg comeback, Virgil van Dijk finally looking human and Salah’s brace though, the Brazil international’s two-assist display has somehow flown under the radar.

In typical Firmino fashion, the 28 year-old set up the two most important goals of the game with inch-perfect passes. First, he linked up with Sadio Mane to open the scoring, and then he helped decide the match with a lovely dinked ball for Salah’s winner.

Of course, Firmino is more than just goals and assists, and he fired in two shots of his own, provided an extra key pass that was not converted, and also danced his way past a defender on one occasion, per Sofascore.

The spearhead of Liverpool’s pressing machine did his part defensively too, winning four duels, completing one tackle and making one clearance.

Perhaps most surprising of all, this was the first time Firmino has assisted both Mane and Salah in a single match, per Andrew Beasley.

Considering how often the Brazilian is the glue that holds the front three together – he has assisted both wingers three times each already this season – it seems scarcely believable that he hadn’t managed this feat before.

That said, this has us wondering if there is anything else the enigmatic forward can break his duck on this season. A scorpion kick? A one-two with himself? Rounding the goalkeeper while doing kick-ups? We wouldn’t put it past him…

Just last weekend, the Frenchman did the very same as he picked up a red card against West Brom for scything down Hal Robson-Kanu with the Baggies scoring a winner from the resulting free-kick.

It appears that patience is wearing thin for much of the Rs’ fanbase, and several of them have taken to Twitter to vent their anger.

One supporter claimed the defender needs to be sold while he was also brandished as a ‘walking disaster’ and ‘liability’ by others.

Another fan joked that the 26-year-old must be trying to get into the Guinness Book of Records for giving away the most penalties.

وواصل: “أتوقع أن تريزيجيه سيكون أمامه مستقبل كبير، والفرق بين محمد صلاح وغيره من اللاعبين هو الطموح والعمل على نفسه في وقت الفراغ”.

وبسؤال من هو اللاعب الذي تتمنى أن تصبح وكيله؟، أجاب: “طاهر محمد طاهر لاعب مختلف وعقلية مختلفة ويجيد اللعب في أكثر من مركز، وأتمنى بالتأكيد أن أكون موكله”.

As we find ourselves in the midst of an international break, what better time to reflect on the start of the campaign than now?

In this instance, we’re talking about transfers. Specifically Crystal Palace’s dealings in the market.

The Eagles completed four signings back in the summer when bringing Gary Cahill, James McCarthy, Jordan Ayew and Victor Camarasa to the club, but how have the quartet got on at Selhurst Park since?

Let’s take a look, and also attempt to rank the signings out of 10…

Gary Cahill 

At 33 years of age, you couldn’t have blamed Palace fans for possibly feeling like Cahill’s best days may have been behind him, but the England international has been brilliant for Palace.

He has helped the Eagles to four wins and a draw from his first six Premier League appearances and has also drawn praise from some supporters on Twitter for his performance against Manchester United.

Cahill has also helped the south Londoners to two clean sheets in those six league outings, with Palace conceding just eight goals in eight games as a whole.

Having arrived for free, there can be few complaints about Cahill’s start to life in SE25.

James McCarthy 

The Irishman has been in the Premier League for many years now with both Wigan and Everton, ensuring that he would most likely be a safe pair of hands for Palace when they signed him back in the summer.

McCarthy has started just one league game but did well against West Ham when doing so as we detailed here.

The former Hamilton man looks like he’ll fit in perfectly at Palace if the early signs are anything to go by, as his energy in midfield and vast Premier League experience suggests he will by no means be a passenger.

For a man who cost under £1m, the infancy of his Palace career suggests McCarthy will be an astute piece of business.

Jordan Ayew

It seems as if on-loan Jordan Ayew is a completely different player to permanently contracted Jordan Ayew.

Having scored just one league goal while on loan last term, Ayew has scored three in seven so far for Palace this season, including the winning goals against Aston Villa and West Ham.

He has led the line admirably while Christian Benteke continues to misfire and Connor Wickham’s polystyrene knees remain – in truth, he has been the only Palace striker who looks up for it this season.

The former Swansea man looks a man reborn in that No.9 shirt, and like Cahill, there can be few complaints about him.

Victor Camarasa 

This is a tough one to judge.

The Spaniard joined from Real Betis on a season-long loan, but his only start has come against Colchester in the Carabao Cup – apart from that, he has played just five Premier League minutes.

As a result, we simply can’t give him too high a rating.

In that game against Colchester however, while Palace did eventually lose on penalties, Camarasa was handed the WhoScored Man of the Match award, having taken two shots while also completing three key passes.

تلقى فريق وست هام خبرًا سيئًا بشأن اللاعب ديكلان رايس حسبما ذكرت تقارير صحفية إنجليزية اليوم.

وكان ديكلان رايس قد تعرض لإصابة في الركبة خلال تواجده مع منتخب إنجلترا في فترة التوقف الدولي خلال شهر مارس الماضي.

وذكرت صحيفة “ذا صن” الإنجليزية، أن الفحوص التي خضع لها ديكلان رايس كشفت عن خبر صادم لـ وست هام بقيادة ديفيد مويس.

وأوضحت أن رايس سيغيب عن وست هام على مدار الأسابيع الخمسة المقبلة.

هذا الأمر يعني غياب ديكلان رايس عن وست هام في المباريات السبع القادمة، وهو ما يُعد ضربة قوية لـ ديفيد مويس، في ظل القتال على المراكز الأربعة الأولى.

وأكدت الصحيفة أن ديكلان رايس لا يحتاج إلى الخضوع لعملية جراحية في الركبة.

يُذكر أن وست هام يحتل حاليًا المركز السابع برصيد 49 نقطة، بعد خوض 29 مباراة.

Tottenham have released the interesting cover of their matchday programme for this weekend’s clash with Watford, which depicts Davinson Sanchez on the front, prompting hope amongst some Spurs fans that he starts on Saturday.

It is fair to say that the Spurs defence has endured a torrid time of late, conceding 13 goals in their last five matches, with the most recent drubbings against Bayern Munich and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld partnered each other at the back in those games, and so some supporters are hoping to see a change in personnel, with Sanchez currently viewed as a safer option by comparison.

However, the Colombia international hasn’t faired much better than his defensive teammates this season if truth be told.

He has only been on the winning side once in six matches, and in those games Spurs have conceded eight goals, so it may be a surprise that some sections of the fanbase are desperate to see him in action.

However, neither Vertonghen nor Alderweireld appear to be in the right mindset currently, and that could be contributing to Spurs’ problems in defence, which explains the reactions of some hoping that Sanchez starts, as seen below.

تحدث جونزالو هيجواين عن قصته مع المنتخب الأرجنتيني واعتزاله اللعب الدولي، والانتقادات التي تلقاها بعد خسارة كأس العالم 2014.

هيجواين أعلن اعتزاله اللعب دوليًا في عام 2019، بعد 10 سنوات مثل فيها المنتخب الأرجنتيني، وخسر العديد من البطولات في اللحظات الأخيرة.

وقال هيجواين أن قميص المنتخب الأرجنتيني ثقيلًا، وهو ما أوضحه بعد الانتقادات التي تعرض لها، وذلك خلال مقابلة مع صحيفة “lanacion” الأرجنتينية.

وأوضح هيجواين: “لقد أسيء فهمي، الرسالة التي كنت أقصدها، هي أن قميص المنتخب الوطني ليس سهلًا، كنت أشير إلى الضغط الذي يمثله اللعب لبلد بأكمله”.

وأضاف: “لم يثقل قميص المنتخب الأرجنتيني كاهلي أبدًا، فقط كنت أتحدث عن المسؤولية التي يمثلها هذا القميص، ربما مع الفري لديك مدينة خلفك، بعض الجماهير، ولكن ليس 40 مليون شخص يمنهم أن يجعلوك تشعر أن سعادتهم تعتمد عليك فقط”.

هيجواين سجل أهم هدف للمنتخب الأرجنتيني منذ مونديال 90، وهو الذي سجله في بلجيكا بمونديال البرازيل 2014، لأنه سمح للفريق بكسر العقدة والتأهل إلى ربع نهائي كأس العالم.

وعندما سُئل جونزالو، هل تتمنى تقديرك في وقت ما بالأرجنتين، أجاب: “أعتقد ذلك، كل شيء يستقر بمرور الوقت، الوصول إلى النهائي ليس أمرًا سهلًا”.

وأضاف: “سيقدرون ما فعلته مع الوقت، ليس لدي شك في ذلك، يجب أن يمر الوقت، ويُدركون أنني سجلت أهدافًا في مراحل خروج المغلوب بمونديال جنوب إفريقيا في المكسي 2010، وبلجيكا في البرازيل 2014، والعديد من الأهداف في التصفيات وبطولات كوبا أمريكا”.

وأشار: “أنصح لاوتارو مارتينيز بأن يكون هادئًا، أحذره بألا يحدث معه مثلما حدث معي، لأنني قبل مونديال 2014 ومباراة ألمانيا تحديدًا، كنت أفضل مهاجم 9 في العالم، وبعد النهائي، انتهى كل شيء، حتى ذلك الحين”.

واختتم: “أريد أن أقول لـ لاوتارو أن يتحلى بالهدوء، لأنه الآن كل الألوان وردية، لكن قد تأتي اللحظة في مباراة كبرى مثل نهائي كأس العالم أو كوبا أمريكا، وإذا كان سيء الحظ، سيتحمل المسؤولية وحده، لذلك لا ينبغي عليه أن يصدق نفسه في الأفضل أو الأسوأ، يدع الأمور تسير، ويثق في نفسه”.
