‘É o maior desafio da minha carreira, o time de maior expressão. Tive passagens por vários clubes. Em todos, tive que me dedicar e correr atrás de melhorar para estar aqui com esta oportunidade’, declarou.

‘É até curioso. Eu não esperava. Tinham murmúrios do Grêmio, mas nunca chegou nada. O Ypiranga e o Brasil de Pelotas me procuraram. Quando veio o Inter… Pô! Meu time do coração. A felicidade foi enorme’.

'Going to try and bring that into my game' – Pretorius hopes to emulate Dhoni's calmness

The South Africa allrounder talks about his major takeaways from his IPL stint with CSK

Firdose Moonda06-Jun-20223:37

Pretorius: Playing in IPL was one of my bucket list items

Dwaine Pretorius has started to believe he can do anything on a cricket field, thanks to MS Dhoni. After a season with the Chennai Super Kings, and four stints with Dhoni at the crease, Pretorius has had first-hand experience of how to combine calm and confidence to pull off a successful chase.”The biggest thing I learnt from him is how calm he is at the crease and how much he tries to take pressure off himself and put it onto the bowler,” Pretorius said, from India, where South Africa will play India in five T20Is starting on Thursday. “He made me realise that at the death, the batter isn’t under more pressure, it’s actually the bowler that is under more pressure.”As a bowler, you can still lose the match if you have to defend 18 off the last three balls and as a batter you can win it. It was a fresh mindset. He doesn’t get too excited. He doesn’t get too down on himself. Anything is always possible and I love that about him. He is very optimistic. He believes he can do anything.”Pretorius and Dhoni’s most memorable partnership came on April 21, against Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium. Chasing 156, CSK needed 50 runs off 26 balls when Pretorius walked out to bat. He was greeted with a searing yorker from Jasprit Bumrah and went on to hit two fours off the next two times Bumrah tried the delivery. By the time Pretorius was dismissed, CSK needed 17 runs off five balls and Dhoni got them home, with a four off the final delivery.Related

That match stood out for Pretorius as an example of how Dhoni can take matches deep, and even though Pretorius is not South Africa’s usual batting finisher, he’d be willing to do the job if needed. “I am going to try and bring that into my game: the calmness but also that self-belief that from any position, any game can be won.”But it wasn’t all celebratory at CSK this season. The franchise strung together their worst set of results in their IPL history and finished second from bottom on the points table, having gone into the tournament as defending champions. Despite the disappointing outcome, Pretorius said the mood in the camp did not dampen and they’ve chosen to take the long view as they rebuild following a mega-auction.Dwaine Pretorius fronted up to bowl at the death for Chennai Super Kings in his first IPL season•BCCI

“What was nice about the CSK franchise is that it is very experienced. We all understand that cricket doesn’t always go your way,” Pretorius said. “It’s very important to just take the positives out of a bad season and try and build for a stronger future. It’s all about building for the next year or three years and trying to make sure a bad season is not a complete loss.”He called the CSK environment, “performance based,” where players were “given a lot of responsibility to prepare like you want to, come up with the plans that you believe will work and making sure you execute your plans.”While Pretorius didn’t pick up anything particularly new that he could use in the international T20 game, he made a case for one of the innovations of the IPL – the strategic time-out – to become a more prominent part of fixtures.”I enjoy it quite a bit. I know it makes the game a bit longer but it just splits the game into three parts – the one before, the one in the middle and the one after. It gives each team a moment to assess their strategy and what’s the best way to go forward,” he said. “And it’s about getting the coach – that will always have an objective view from the outside’s opinion as well. It makes the game a bit more liquid and it breaks up momentum.”Primarily, Pretorius is batting for the time-out for the same reason he enjoyed watching Dhoni bat: because it gives anyone an opportunity to make a big play. “Even if you might be out of it for the first few overs, you can always come back into the game after the strategic time out. It just breaks the momentum of either the bowling or the batting team,” he said. “It makes it quite interesting.”

Offer made: Spurs target dream Maddison rival in £25k-p/w "magician"

There is no getting away from it; it’s been a dire season for Tottenham Hotspur so far.

Ange Postecoglou’s side currently find themselves in 11th place in the Premier League, and while they have a League Cup semi-final to look forward to, it’s against the utterly sensational Liverpool, who look practically unbeatable.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though, as the club do have a number of genuinely exciting youngsters in the squad and academy, which could see them become a serious force a few years down the line.

Moreover, it would appear as if Daniel Levy and Co are leaning into this strategy further, as recent reports have linked the club with another exciting prospect who could be the ideal long-term rival for James Maddison.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Tottenham are very interested in Brighton & Hove Albion prospect Facundo Buonanotte, who’s currently on loan with Leicester City.

In fact, the report has revealed that the North Londoners have already acted upon their interest and have made an offer of around €45m for the young Argentine, which works out to about £37m.

However, the story claims that this fee may not be enough to tempt the Seagulls into selling the £25k-per-week gem, which only shows how highly rated he is.

Brighton midfielder Facundo Buonanotte.

It could prove to be a complicated and potentially costly transfer to get over the line, but given Buonanotte’s ability and potential, it could be well worth pursuing, especially if he can offer Maddison more competition in the short term.

Why Buonanotte would be a good signing

There are two key reasons why Buonanotte could prove to be an excellent signing for Spurs.

The first is the extra competition he could offer Maddison over the next couple of years.

Now, at just 20 years old, there shouldn’t be an expectation on the Argentine’s head to come in and displace the Englishman, but as things stand, he looks like he could at least challenge him for minutes here and there.

For example, while the former Leicester City ace has scored eight goals and provided five assists in 26 appearances this season, the current Foxes “magician,” as dubbed by Rising Stars XI on X, has scored four goals and provided two assists in just 18 appearances.

Now, while that means the Coventry-born ace is averaging a goal involvement every two games to the Argentine’s average of one every three games, he is doing so in a more attack-oriented and better-resourced side, not to mention the fact that he’s eight years older.

In short, while the Brighton prospect wouldn’t displace the Lilywhites’ number ten right away, he certainly looks like he’s on the right track, which brings us to the second reason the North Londoners should sign him: their project.

With the additions of Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert, Lucas Bergvall, and Yang Hook combined with academy products like Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear, it’s clear that Levy and Co are building for a bright future, and therefore, a player like Buonanotte would be the perfect addition.

As talkSPORT’s Jack Johnson says, the youngster “is going to be a star,” and if you still aren’t convinced, then you only need to listen to former Premier League winner Carlos Tevez, who said the youngster “reminds me of Messi” a few years ago, and that “he has no ceiling.”

Ultimately, while it is a lot of money to spend on a youngster, Buonanotte has already shown he can contribute now, and based on the opinions of those in the know, he could be an absolute world-beater a few years down the line.

Therefore, Spurs should do what they can to bring him to N17 next year.

Chelsea keen on "devastating" £50m star who could end Mudryk’s Blues career

Chelsea have clearly undergone a massive squad rebuild in the past few years, getting rid of some of their older squad players and replacing them with young and exciting talents in each position on the pitch.

In some areas, you can already see this paying off, such as central midfield with the big-money signings of Enzo Fernández, Moises Caicedo and Roméo Lavia, who could dominate that midfield for years to come.

However, one area the Blues continue to spend money on in each window is wide attackers, acquiring the likes of Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho in the summer just gone, to join the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Raheem Sterling in the years before.

Whilst many of these signings have shown glimpses of brilliance, it seems Chelsea are yet to fully nail down that superstar wide player, and intentions remain around the club to improve in this area if the opportunity arises.

Chelsea considering LaLiga winger

Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, David Ornstein reported that Chelsea maintain an interest in Athletic Bilbao winger, Nico Williams. Arsenal are also interested in the Spanish wideman, but the package would likely cost around €60m (£50m) which is the player’s release clause.

It is said that the overall package of the deal (including the winger’s high wages) is what deterred Chelsea from a deal in the summer, and this is likely to be the case again with any immediate deal for Williams. According to Capology, the 22-year-old is currently earning just over €200k-per-week, which is around £167k.

Williams has made 25 appearances for Bilbao in all competitions so far this season, scoring two goals, providing five assists and totalling 1,710 minutes played.

Williams vs Mudryk comparison

Unfortunately for Chelsea, with Mudryk now out through suspension for an unknown period of time, the Blues could be forced to act early on another forward addition, and Williams would offer that. The Ukrainian has made 73 appearances since arriving at the club in 2023, scoring ten goals and providing nine assists in that time.

So, by taking a look at the stats, we can see just why the “devastating” winger – as he was described by Emmanuel Petit – would be a sizable upgrade.

When comparing the two players, you can instantly tell both have similar play styles, in the fact they are truly carry-first wingers, boasting the quality and creativity to find their teammates with progressive and key passes and find entries into the box via their skill set.

However, whilst Williams has struggled for goals this season (only two so far, giving him 0.09 goals per 90), his shot volume is still higher than Mudryk’s and that is a trait which Chelsea lacks in wide areas apart from Madueke on the right.

This blend of ability to create for others, as well as himself, would be a welcomed attribute for Enzo Maresca on the wing.

Whether Chelsea look to sign Williams in January, go back in for him in the summer, or move onto other targets come the summer, the need for another left-sided player will be determined by the length of time Mudryk is out, so it’s definitely one to keep a close eye on.

Spinners will make the difference in Galle scrap between Sri Lanka batters and Pakistan quicks

Sri Lanka and Pakistan are three and four on the WTC table, and this series could make a difference to their chances of making the final

Yasir Shah will be back in the XI, but can he recapture the magic of 2015?•AFP/Getty Images

Big pictureThrough the middle of the last decade, Sri Lanka and Pakistan seemed to play Test series annually. Often, these were closely contested, and frequently produced compelling cricket. Pakistan’s two incredible fourth-innings chases stand out – the manic one in Sharjah in early 2014, the masterful Younis Khan-led triumph in Pallekele the following year. There were the Rangana Herath routs as well, such as in Abu Dhabi in 2017, and Galle in 2014.Kumar Sangakkara’s mastery over Saeed Ajmal, Yasir Shah dominating a series in Sri Lanka in 2015, Sri Lanka quicks occasionally outdoing Pakistan’s in the UAE. This is a low-intensity rivalry, perhaps, but the narratives have been consistently gripping. These teams had played a series in Pakistan in 2019, which the home side had won 1-0. But in Sri Lanka, at least, this seems a fresh start. The batting greats from either side are gone. Pakistan have fearsome young quicks, and Sri Lanka’s batting is beginning to make strides, despite their woeful outing in the first Test against Australia. As this is a Galle Test, however, spin is the thing, and here is where the greatest unknowns are. Yasir is likely to be back in the XI, but can he recapture the magic of 2015? His last Test came in 2019, and he wasn’t particularly impressive in the warm-up match in Colombo, where he took 86 for 1. Nauman Ali, the other spinner who is likely to play, went wicketless for 60 in the warm-up, and took his wickets at 42.22 in the recent series against Australia, though that had been on flat surfaces.Sri Lanka are going in with a confident but inexperienced attack. Prabath Jayasuriya is almost certain to play, having claimed a match-winning 12 wickets on debut last week. Ramesh Mendis has been somewhat consistent, but he’s played only eight Tests himself. Maheesh Theekshana, the other likely spinner, has played only four first-class matches all up.How the slow bowlers from either side impose themselves on the match may go a long way to deciding the outcome.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Sri Lanka WLWDL
Pakistan LDDWWNiroshan Dickwella’s place is under a little bit of scrutiny•AFP/Getty Images

In the spotlightWith Sajid Khan left out of the squad and Nauman Ali out of the XI for the first Test, Pakistan are trying an entirely new spin combination. While Yasir Shah can win Test matches by himself – and has done so before in Sri Lanka – he is returning from injury, and could do with solid support from the two allrounders in the XI, neither of whom is proven at this level. If Mohammad Nawaz and the debutant Agha Salman can give him that, Pakistan could have the tools to keep Sri Lanka’s batters under control. There is a theory that Niroshan Dickwella is Sri Lanka’s best wicketkeeper, but in recent series, there has not been a lot of evidence in this direction. He missed four stumpings in the series against Australia, two of which were fairly straightforward [in his defence, opposition wicketkeeper Alex Carey did not have a great series with the gloves either]. Add to this his often promising but insubstantial contributions with the bat, Dickwella’s place is under a little scrutiny.Team newsSri Lanka are likely to stick to the same spin attack that routed Australia in the second Test between those teams. But they will bring back Dhananjaya de Silva into the middle order, despite Kamindu Mendis’ excellent outing on debut. Seamer Asitha Fernando may come back in for Kasun Rajitha too, after missing the last match with Covid-19. Pathum Nissanka remains out with Covid-19, and Oshada Fernando will open instead.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Oshada Fernando, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt), 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Angelo Mathews, 5 Dhananjaya de Silva, 6 Dinesh Chandimal, 7 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 8 Ramesh Mendis, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Prabath Jayasuriya, 11 Asitha FernandoAllrounder Agha Salman is set to make his Test debut for Pakistan, following an impressive run in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class tournament in the last three years. Legspinner Yasir Shah, the hero of Pakistan’s 2015 series win in Sri Lanka, will also return to the XI, as will 28-year-old Mohammad Nawaz, who last played a Test in November 2016.Pakistan: 1 Abdullah Shafique, 2 Imam-ul-Haq, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Babar Azam (capt), 5 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 6 Agha Salman 7 Mohammad Nawaz, 8 Yasir Shah, 9 Hasan Ali, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Naseem ShahPitch and conditionsThe surface is likely to be decent for batting in the first two days, before it starts to take spin from day three. There is always the likelihood of rain in Galle at this time of the year, while the stiff wind that blows across the ground will also be something bowlers will have to contend with.Stats and triviaPakistan have won 20 Tests to 16 they have lost against Sri Lanka. Even within Sri Lanka, they have a better-than-even record – they have won eight and lost only seven. Dickwella’s best batting average is against Pakistan. He averages 40.55 against this opposition, with 365 runs across ten innings. Yasir averages 19.33 in Sri Lanka, which is better than he averages anywhere else. He has only bowled in six innings and taken 24 wickets there, though, all in that 2015 series. Sri Lanka sit at third on the World Test Championship points table, and Pakistan fourth. A 2-0 win for either could put them in with an outside chance of making the WTC final.

Arsenal could now move for £50m forward who scored against them this season

Arsenal are targeting a forward who’s already bagged a goal against them this campaign, and it is believed they could advance on a January move before deadline day on February 3.

Arsenal in market for attacker after Saka and Jesus injuries

Star winger Bukayo Saka will be out of action until March after undergoing surgery on a hamstring problem, while Gabriel Jesus is set to miss the rest of this Premier League campaign after rupturing his ACL.

Arsenal also weighing up January move for £25m Dusan Vlahovic alternative

He’d be a much cheaper option.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 15, 2025

Saka’s return of goals and assists has been sorely missed by manager Mikel Arteta, even if they did secure North London Derby bragging rights with a 2-1 win over Tottenham on Wednesday evening, while Jesus’ absence has left the Spaniard with just Kai Havertz as his only striking option.

Arsenal can scarcely believe their luck when it comes to injuries in attack recently, which has reportedly prompted the Gunners to dip into this January market in search of external solutions.

Arteta has confirmed that the club are actively pursuing potential signings right now, and it is reliably believed that a striker is being targeted by Arsenal this month (Sky Sports).

“We are actively looking in the market to improve the squad, and that’s been the same since day one,” said Arteta on January transfers.

“It would be naive not to do that because it is always an opportunity to evolve the team and improve the squad, especially with the circumstances. So yes, we are looking, and we are trying and let’s see what we are able to do.”

Arsenal hold a concete reported interest in Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus as one target, while there are rumours that they could look to bring in Marseille striker Elye Wahi, amid reports he’d cost just £25 million.

Given both Saka and Jesus’ absences, it is little surprise we’re now hearing Bryan Mbeumo being mentioned as a potential option.

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo

The versatile Cameroonian can play both out wide and as a centre-forward, acting as cover for both Jesus and Saka, with reports claiming he’s valued at around £50 million by Brentford.

While Thomas Frank has insisted that he’s not for sale this month, you could argue that a big offer could tempt Brentford into selling, especially when you consider the African has just 18 months left on his contract.

Arsenal could advance on potential Bryan Mbeumo deal in January

According to RMC Sport and reliable journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Arsenal could “go on the offensive” for Mbeumo before the end of this transfer window after registering an interest in his services.

Bryan Mbeumo celebrates for Brentford

Arteta’s side are joined by Tottenham and Man United in this regard, with all three sides gathering information on the 25-year-old who’s scored 13 goals for Brentford in all competitions so far this season.

One of those strikes actually came against Arsenal, where he played up front in a 3-1 defeat against them at the G-tech Community Stadium on New Year’s Day.
