Rangers have an "unbelievable" star who could now be their next big sale

Sunday was an absolutely sickening afternoon for all of a Rangers persuasion, with the Ibrox side defeated by fierce rivals Celtic in the League Cup Final in the most heartbreaking fashion imaginable.

Fair to say Glasgow’s big two served up a thriller.

Nedim Bajrami fired the Light Blues in front on the cusp of half-time at Hampden, only for Celtic to lead 2-1 and then 3-2 in the second half, but Mohamed Diomande and then Danilo hit back, the latter with a towering header mere moments after his team had fallen behind.

This forced extra time and, ultimately, a penalty shootout; just the second shootout in Glasgow derby history.

Nine of the ten spot-kicks were scored, but somebody had to miss and that someone turned out to be Ridvan Yilmaz, his tame attempt saved by Kasper Schmeichel, meaning it was Celtic who once again hoisted aloft the trophy.

From Philippe Clement’s point-of-view, he is still yet to beat Celtic in six attempts, but there are certainly signs his team are moving in the right direction, making the next Premiership Old Firm fixture at Ibrox as soon as 2 January so crucial.

Rangers players starting to show their best

Of course, Sunday’s shootout defeat was devastating, but it was another sign of progress from Rangers.

Three days earlier, they’d held Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw in the Europa League, unfortunate not to win that one, having scored nine goals across back-to-back Premiership victories against Kilmarnock and Ross County beforehand.

A key factor behind the Gers’ recent resurgence has been the emergence of Hamza Igamane.

The striker arrived from AS FAR in his native Morocco for £2.5m last summer, having minimal impact before opening his account against FCSB in late October, before scoring five in five between 28 November and 12 December, bagging a brace against Nice, before breaking the deadlock when Spurs visited Govan last Thursday.

Ianis Hagi’s return has also attracted a lot of attention, starting each of the last four domestic fixtures, registering a pair of assists during the demolition of Killie earlier this month.

This season’s top-scorer Vaclav Cerny, who has nine goals to his name, has also earned wide-spread praise, but there’s another Rangers player, who’s perhaps going under the radar, that could prove to be the squad’s most valuable asset.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rangers next big sale could be inbound

Nicolas Raskin arrived at Rangers from Standard Liège for £1.75m back in January 2023, making 67 appearances in Light Blue to date, his only goal for the club, so far, came during a 4-0 demolition of Hibs in October last year.

According to Sofascore, the Belgian is only Rangers’ joint-seventh highest-rated player this season, albeit he’s been rated 7 or higher in three of his last four Europa League appearances, as well as for each of his last seven Premiership outings.

Raskin is clearly a man in form, so could he command a massive fee, should he depart Glasgow in 2025?

As you can see, since Rangers returned to the Scottish Premiership in 2016, they have sold just six players for £2.5m or more, with Calvin Bassey, Nathan Patterson and Joe Arbo the only men departing for at least £10m.

During the same period, for context, Celtic have sold seven players for £10m+: Matt O’Riley, Jota, Kieran Tierney, Moussa Dembélé, Odsonne Édouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Jeremie Frimpong departing for a combined £138.5m.

If Rangers want to compete with their cross-city rivals, something Clement says they currently are unable to do financially, they need to start selling players for huge profits.

Key players from the Steven Gerrard title-winning campaign such as Borna Barišić, Connor Goldson, Ryan Kent, and Alfredo Morelos have all been allowed to depart for free, or for minimal fees, which simply isn’t allowing the Gers to reinvest.

So, they need to find those players and perhaps Raskin could be the man for the job. Rangers legend Kris Boyd labelled Raskin as “unbelievable” against Tottenham last week, adding that “it was his best performance for Rangers”.

The stats certainly told a pleasant story. Against elite midfielders such as James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur, the 23-year-old registered the most touches (76) and the most passes (49) of any Gers player, showcasing what a talent he is. As Glasgow World reporter Lewis Anderson stated, he was the ‘best player on the park against Tottenham’.

His stock continues to rise, so could he depart for a gigantic profit?

As well as Dessers: Clement must finally cash in on 1/10 Rangers flop

The Glasgow Rangers midfielder and forward should both be sold in the January transfer window.

Batting powerhouses clash in Royals-Super Giants contest at Wankhede

No clear favourite on who will be Royals’ fifth bowler after Coulter-Nile injury

Srinidhi Ramanujam09-Apr-20222:20

How do Royals deal with Bishnoi?

Big pictureKL Rahul vs Jos Buttler. Ravi Bishnoi vs Yuzvendra Chahal. The two in-form teams Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants clash against each other in a tantalising second game of the day at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Royals faced a minor hiccup, going down to Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets after winning their first two matches comprehensively, and slipped to the fourth position in the points table. A win here against Super Giants, who are placed third with three wins from four matches, will lift Royals to the top. However, that’s easier said than done. Super Giants boast of batting depth where three of their batters Quinton de Kock, Rahul and Deepak Hooda together have notched up 411 runs out of the 693 runs scored by the team and also feature in the top-10 run-getters this season. There is also the young Ayush Badoni, all of 22, who has produced stunning counter attacks, taking on the likes of Mohammed Shami and Lockie Ferguson. As far as captain Rahul is concerned, Wankhede has been a happy hunting ground in the IPL. The opener has scored 399 runs in eight innings – including two half-centuries and a hundred – at a strike rate of 146.Live in the USA

You can watch the match live in the USA on ESPN+.

Royals are also a batting-heavy side, with the likes of Buttler, Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer providing the fireworks. However, their weak link is the fifth bowling option which the Super Giants would be keen to exploit. The team has tried four different bowlers – including Nathan Coulter-Nile who sat out after getting injured in their opener- and all of them have leaked more than 10 runs an over. Navdeep Saini has been the expensive one, with an economy of 12 from six overs he has bowled so far.Despite managing to defend scores of 193 and 210 when other teams have largely struggled to do so this time, Royals might just start to worry about R Ashwin’s form as well, especially after his 21-run over against Royal Challengers which proved to be the turning point for them losing the game. The offspinner has conceded 90 runs in 12 overs so far, accounting for only a wicket. That there are three left-handers in the Super Giants’ top six could help Ashwin, who has a great record against these batters across formats, find his feet sooner than later. In the newsRoyals’ Australian allrounder Coulter-Nile has returned home after suffering a side strain. West Indies’ left-arm pacer Obed McCoy, who had a memorable 2021, picking up 24 wickets in 14 T20s, could be the team’s fourth overseas player. There is a chance that Super Giants might bring in Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera for Australian Andrew Tye, who has gone for 9.72 runs an over in three matches so far.Likely XIsLucknow Super Giants : 1 KL Rahul (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Evin Lewis, 4 Deepak Hooda, 5 Krunal Pandya, 6 Ayush Badoni, 7 Krishnappa Gowtham, 8 Jason Holder, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Ravi Bishnoi, 11 Dushmantha Chameera/Andrew Tye Rajasthan Royals: : 1 Jos Buttler, 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Devdutt Padikkal, 4 Sanju Samson (capt & wk), 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Riyan Parag, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Navdeep Saini/Obed McCoy, 9 Trent Boult, 10 Prasidh Krishna, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalStrategy punt de Kock may be coming off two half-centuries in four matches, but the opener will be wary of the threat posed by the dangerous spin combination of Ashwin-Chahal. The in-form Chahal has dismissed de Kock five times in seven T20s, while Ashwin has removed him four times in nine innings. Captain Rahul might be targeting Trent Boult, against whom he has enjoyed success, which is evident from his strike rate of 177 against the left-arm pacer. In the nine T20s, the New Zealander has dismissed Rahul only once.Stats that matter Buttler has scored 547 runs at a strike rate of 146.25 in the IPL at the Wankhede Stadium, most at a venue for him. Royals have hit ten sixes against spinners this IPL, the third-most by a team. Super Giants have accounted for ten wickets at the death in this season, most by a team.

Everton interested in signing "dangerous" striker with 31 goals last season

Everton are now interested in signing an “extremely dangerous” new striker in a bid to stave off the threat of relegation in the winter transfer window.

Everton transfer news

Despite a 4-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out, it would be fair to say the Toffees’ Premier League campaign has been underwhelming so far, having collected just 14 points from their opening 14 games.

As such, Sean Dyche may be keen to strengthen his squad this January, and there have been reports the manager is now pushing to sign Fenerbahce winger Oguz Aydin, having previously sent scouts to watch him in action.

Dyche may need to strengthen his attacking options this winter, as there have been reports the manager could look to cash in on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has already turned down offers to extend his stay at Goodison Park.

Signing a new striker may then have to become a priority for Everton, as Beto is also now pushing to leave the club due to his lack of game time this season. Torino are now in active talks over a deal which could amount to around £16.5m.

Everton pushing to sign "very intelligent" 24 y/o who Jose Mourinho loves

Scouts have been sent to watch him.

ByHenry Jackson Dec 9, 2024 Everton keen on Yuri Alberto

According to a report from The Boot Room, one new signing the Toffees have in mind is Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto, who has admitted that he dreams of playing in the Premier League. However, there may well be competition for the Brazilian’s signature from a number of other Premier League clubs, with both Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest named as potential suitors, while West Ham United have previously tabled a £14m bid.

A bid of £17m could be enough to secure the 23-year-old’s signature at the beginning of 2024, and he has stated there is a 50/50 chance he leaves Corinthians this January, which could open the door for a move to Goodison Park.

yuri-alberto-everton-transfer-news-premier-league

Although the Merseyside derby was postponed due to Storm Darragh last week, Everton’s fixture list still looks extremely tricky this winter.

As such, Dyche may be in a position where he needs to strengthen his squad in January to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle, and Alberto could be exactly the type of signing to propel the Toffees to safety.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded the Corinthians star as “extremely dangerous” in the past, and he was in fine form in front of goal for the Brazilian club last term. The former Santos man chalked up 31 goals in 57 games in all competitions, indicating that he could be ready to take the next step in his career by moving to the Premier League.

The uncertain futures surrounding Calvert-Lewin and Beto make signing a striker a priority for Dyche this winter, and at £17m Alberto could be the perfect replacement.

Matt Renshaw, Tom Lammonby set up batters' day for Somerset in Bristol

Four first-day half-centuries give visitors upper hand in West Country derby

ECB Reporters Network12-May-2022

Matt Renshaw leaves the field after being bowled by Zak Chappell for 94•Getty Images

Matt Renshaw and Tom Lammonby shared an opening stand of 172 to give Somerset early control of their LV= Insurance County Championship match with arch-rivals Gloucestershire at Bristol.Overseas recruit Renshaw hit 94, off 141 deliveries, with 16 fours, while 21-year-old Lammonby lost little in comparison, striking 11 boundaries in his 131-ball innings of 76.The two left-handers put together their chanceless partnership from 43.4 overs after Somerset had lost the toss and paved the way for a first day total of 319 for four on a benign pitch at the Seat Unique Stadium.James Hildreth contributed 53 and Tom Abell an unbeaten 52. Zak Chappell, one of three new loanees in the Gloucestershire side, was pick of the home attack with two for 49 from 18 overs.Renshaw and Lammonby dominated the morning session after Gloucestershire had elected to field in bright sunshine on a pitch with only a suggestion of greenness.Lammonby had a stroke of fortune on six when getting a leading edge to tall seamer Chappell. The ball spiralled back over the bowler’s head and fell safe.Ryan Higgins beat Renshaw’s outside edge a couple of times, but Somerset’s opening pair soon settled and batted with increasing assurance.Renshaw accelerated impressively and, despite being briefly becalmed in the forties, went to his half-century with a single off Brad Wheal, making his Gloucestershire debut on loan from Hampshire. The Australian had faced 85 balls and hit nine fours. Lammonby was particularly effective through the leg-side with some meaty pulls and drives as the partnership progressed to 114 off 31 overs by lunch. The afternoon session began with Lammonby moving to fifty with an edged boundary off Higgins, having faced 94 deliveries and hit nine boundaries. There looked to be little in the pitch for Gloucestershire’s injury-hit attack. But Chappell had stuck to his task, bowling a probing line from the Pavilion End, and was suddenly rewarded with two wickets in quick succession.Having previously demonstrated sound shot selection, Lammonby looked to guide ball that was too straight over the slips and miscued a simple catch to gully. In his next over Chappell produced the best ball of the day to beat Renshaw’s back-foot defensive shot with one that squeezed between bat and pad. From looking untroubled, Somerset had lost both openers and were 174 for two.Gloucestershire’s fightback continued when Tom Banton, who had lofted left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar over long-on for six on his way to 18, edged a defensive push off Higgins through to James Bracey. The wicketkeeper took a fine low catch, one-handed diving to his right, and at 207 for three Somerset were in danger of relinquishing their stranglehold.Skipper Abell and the vastly experienced Hildreth, 18 years to the day since scoring his maiden first class century against Durham, steadied things and took the score to 229 at tea.By the time Gloucestershire took the second new ball, a further 43 had been added under continuing blue skies, but with a stiff breeze blowing across the ground.Abell and Hildreth were looking rock solid, but having reached a 96-ball fifty, the latter pushed forward to left-armer Matt Taylor and edged through to Bracey. The stand of 85 had re-established Somerset’s dominance and Abell reached a 125-ball half-century with a glorious off-driven four. But Gloucestershire kept decent control of the run-rate and could also take positives from an absorbing day.

Forget Spence: Ange’s 3/10 Spurs star was "absolutely awful again"

A chaotic week for Tottenham Hotspur continued on Thursday afternoon, with Ange Postecoglou’s side slipping to yet another Premier League defeat after going down 1-0 to high-flyers Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

After a thrilling set of results against both Manchester United and Liverpool over the last seven days – the latter of which ended in a 6-3 defeat – the Lilywhites were rather muted at the City Ground, as things simply didn’t click into gear in an attacking sense.

At the other end, the north London side were undone just before the half-hour mark as Morgan Gibbs-White’s threaded pass caught the returning Destiny Udogie napping, with former Manchester United man Anthony Elanga duly prodding home to take the visitors into third in the table.

Having later seen one-time Forest loanee Djed Spence dismissed at the death to add further salt to the wounds, Spurs, meanwhile, now find themselves languishing in the bottom half following that latest defeat, to pile further pressure on that man Postecoglou.

Djed Spence's Forest return

Part of the side Forest side that secured promotion from the Championship under Steve Cooper back in the 2021/22 season, Spence would have been hoping to enjoy a positive return to Nottingham amid his recent renaissance in a Spurs shirt.

Handed his third successive league start by Postecoglou – who opted to drop Pedro Porro to the bench in place of the aforementioned Udogie instead – the 24-year-old was largely solid, in truth, for much of the affair, having provided an outlet in attack after chalking up two key passes in total, while completing 100% of his dribbles.

At the back, the one-time Middlesbrough man also won five of his nine ground duels and enjoyed a respectable 87% pass accuracy rate, even despite squandering the ball on 19 occasions amid his desire to make things happen for his side.

As football.london’s Alasdair Gold noted in his post-match player ratings, the defender’s late dismissal for a second yellow card came following ‘another otherwise solid display’, with it something of a blow that he will now miss the upcoming clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Spence then was no real villain despite that stoppage-time red, with the finger needing to be pointed elsewhere among his struggling teammates.

The Spurs star who was "awful" vs Forest

The north Londoners had scored 12 goals across their last three games in all competitions heading into Thursday’s encounter, with few likely to have expected that they would fire a blank this time around.

That said, injuries have left Postecoglou largely short of options in an attacking sense, with the only senior attacker on the bench having been that of Timo Werner, outside of teenage marksman, Will Lankshear.

With Werner only recently copping flak from his manager following an “unacceptable” first-half performance against Rangers, it is no surprise that the former Celtic boss has kept faith in captain Heung-min Son on the left flank, albeit with questions needing to be asked regarding the South Korean’s limp showings.

As GOAL journalist Mitch Fretton stated, the long-serving winger was “absolutely awful again”, prior to being replaced by Werner in the closing stages, having lost possession ten times from his 52 touches.

In truth, the 32-year-old failed to step up as Spurs sought to get themselves back into the game, with the attack in total manufacturing just a solitary big chance in Nottingham.

Heung-min Son

It was for that reason that the aforementioned Gold awarded Son a dismal 3/10 match rating for his troubles, while writing that the experienced figure put in ‘a mostly hesitant and ineffective display’.

With seven goals and six assists to his name this season in all competitions, the talismanic forward is certainly no busted flush, yet questions remain for Postecoglou as to just how to get the best out of his misfiring skipper.

Spurs could sign Premier League flop in awful Radu Dragusin repeat

The former PL flop should not be Spurs’ answer to their defensive crisis.
