Rio Ngumoha joins the 10 youngest goalscorers in Premier League history

The Liverpool teenager is the latest to join the list.

ByLewis Thompson Aug 26, 2025

The top 11 players who have scored the most Premier League penalties:

11 Wayne Rooney 23 penalties

Starting the countdown is all-time Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney, who netted 23 times from the spot. However, the Englishman also missed 11 times from 12 yards – the most in Premier League history.

Interestingly, the striker didn’t score one until his third attempt, which was in the 2009/10 campaign against Arsenal.

10 Thierry Henry 23 penalties

dusan-vlahovic-thierry-henry-arsenal-opinion

Thierry Henry was not only a master goalscorer, but a king from the penalty spot. The Frenchman did miss penalties for Arsenal, but never in the Premier League – scoring each of his 23 attempts (at a significantly higher success rate than Rooney).

One of his most famous was his penalty during the final game at Highbury, as his hat-trick secured a 4-2 win and Champions League football for the Gunners.

9 Matt Le Tissier 25 penalties

Former Southampton star Matt Le Tissier’s penalty record was incredible during his career, with the Englishman scoring 47 of his 48 spot kicks.

25 of those came in the Premier League, with Le Tissier leaving the club in 2002 as their second-highest scorer of all time.

8 Jamie Vardy 27 penalties

Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy also sits on 27 penalties, with the first of those coming during the Foxes’ famous 2015/16 title-winning season.

In fact, Vardy scored five in that memorable campaign and scored his first from 12 yards in more than three years in October 2024. However, he has missed seven top-flight spot-kicks – including his most recent attempt against Wolves in April 2025.

7 Sergio Aguero 27 penalties

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero is best known for his dramatic title-winner on the final day against QPR in 2012 and being a prolific striker in the Premier League.

He also took plenty of City penalties, and ended on a total of 27 out of 33. The Argentine’s first came against Newcastle back in 2011 and his last was in 2021 against Fulham.

6 Mark Noble 28 penalties

Mark Noble scored 28 Premier League penalties and missed five during his 18-year career with West Ham United.

The midfielder’s first two were winners against Birmingham City and Liverpool in 2007/08 and his last was against Watford in 2021.

5 Steven Gerrard 31 penalties

Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard scored 46 penalties for the Reds in all competitions, with 31 coming in the Premier League.

The first came in a 1-0 win over Arsenal at Anfield in 2006, however, Gerrard’s last spot kick in the top flight was missed against QPR in 2015.

4 Harry Kane 33 penalties

Former Tottenham captain Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur and England’s all-time record goalscorer was always going to be on this list. Harry Kane converted 33 times from 12 yards before joining Bayern Munich in 2023.

The striker only missed four for Spurs in the Premier League, although none of his misses were in defeats.

3 Mohamed Salah 34 penalties

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has climbed up this list since scoring his first Premier League penalty for the Reds back in 2018. He now sits fourth after scoring nine times from the spot in the 2024/25 season.

The Egyptian King has been a constant performer in front of goal at Anfield, but he has also missed six times from 12 yards, including his first attempt in the Premier League in 2017.

2 Frank Lampard 43 penalties

Chelsea icon Frank Lampard comes in at second on the list with 43 Premier League penalties, with his first two coming while he was at West Ham.

The box-to-box midfielder made the move to Stamford Bridge in 2001 and two years later, he was first-choice from the spot for the Blues.

It’s not Ramsey: Spurs must sign "fearless" £80m-rated Aston Villa star

Despite a few missteps here and there, Tottenham Hotspur have looked reasonably impressive this season.

Ange Postecoglou has seemingly corrected some of the mistakes his side were consistently making towards the end of last year, but has kept the ultra-attacking style of play that makes them so dangerous.

We saw this against Aston Villa yesterday afternoon, as despite going a goal down in the first half, Spurs fought back and ran out 4-1 winners, showing that when they are on song, few sides can curtail their attacking talent.

Yet, everything can be improved upon, and there’s a Villa star who should be on the top of Daniel Levy’s wishlist next year to reinforce the club’s attacking options, and it’s not Jacob Ramsey.

Spurs' attacking stars

As yesterday’s game made abundantly clear, Tottenham’s biggest strength is their attack, so let’s look at a few of their standout stars.

The first is the man of the moment, Dominic Solanke, who, after a tough few weeks, roared back to life against Villa, scoring two goals and deservedly claiming the Man of the Match award from Sky Sports.

The £65m man now has five goals and two assists to his name in 13 appearances for the Lilywhites, which, for a debut season with a new club, isn’t too bad at all, and based on yesterday, those numbers could soon skyrocket.

Another of the goalscorers from Sunday’s impressive win was Brennan Johnson, who, like Solanke, had a rough start to the season but now has a serious claim to being the North Londoners’ most important player at present.

In his 15 appearances so far, the Welsh international has scored seven goals, meaning he is currently averaging one every 2.14 games, which is undeniably impressive for a winger.

Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson

Lastly, James Maddison also found himself on the scoresheet against Unai Emery’s side, and while he’s endured a mixed tenure in North London thus far, he has been a reliable producer of goal involvements this season.

For example, despite having some off games here and there, the former Leicester City star has racked up an impressive haul of three goals and four assists in 13 appearances, which equates to a goal involvement every 1.85 games.

In all, the North Londoners have an impressive array of attacking talent to choose from, but should they move to sign Villa’s only goalscorer from the weekend, they’d have one more.

Why Spurs should sign Villa's rising star

So, the Villa star in question is the incredibly exciting Morgan Rogers.

Now, Spurs may have been interested in signing the Englishman’s teammate and compatriot Jacob Ramsey over the summer, but should they go back to Villa Park in 2025 looking for recruits, they should drop their previous interest and move to sign Rogers instead.

The Halesowen-born dynamo has been in stupendous form this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists in just 13 appearances, equating to a goal involvement on average every 2.16 games, which is remarkable for a 22-year-old midfielder.

Moreover, the “fearless” phenom, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, hasn’t just been performing in the Premier League. He also started all three of the Villans Champions League games this year, picking up one of his assists against Bologna.

There is, however, one small problem with signing the “box-office” midfielder, as dubbed by Sky Sports journalist David Reed, and that is how much he could cost, with former Spurs and Villa manager Tim Sherwood suggesting that the Midlands side could demand up to £80m for their prized asset.

It would represent a significant investment from Levy and Co, but given the 6 foot 2 dynamo’s sensational form this season and the prospect of seeing him play under the tutelage of Postecoglou, one well worth making.

Ultimately, Spurs are a side blessed with attacking talent, but when the transfer window reopens next year, the club should do what they can to add Rogers to their ranks.

Lopetegui can fix Alvarez blow by starting West Ham ace in unfamiliar role

West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui is going into this weekend’s Premier League clash against Everton knowing he’s a man under serious pressure.

The Hammers lost their last outing 3-0 against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, currently sitting in 14th place and only six points clear of the drop zone.

His side have only claimed three wins out of their ten league outings this season, but they have all come at the London Stadium, with the Spaniard hoping to add to that collection this afternoon.

After utilising a 3-4-2-1 against Nuno Espírito Santo’s side last time out, it’s highly likely that Lopetegui will revert to his usual 4-2-3-1 system, allowing more players to feature in a more natural role.

However, he will be without one player for the visit of the Toffees, with a real question mark as to who could come in to replace the absent first-team member.

Edson Alvarez’s absence vs Everton

Mexican holding midfielder Edson Alvarez arrived with real promise from Ajax in the summer of 2023, seen as the perfect replacement for Declan Rice by many.

However, his move to the Premier League has failed to take off as many envisaged, with his start to the current campaign nothing short of a disaster.

The 27-year-old was sent off in the 5-1 Carabao Cup thrashing by Liverpool at Anfield back in September, before receiving his second dismissal last weekend.

Alvarez was initially booked for a deliberate tug on Murillo, preventing the Brazilian from leading a counterattack, before a needless lunge on Anthony Elanga saw the Mexican receive his second booking, which ultimately led to his sending off.

As a result, he’s unavailable for today’s clash against Sean Dyche’s side, with Lopetegui likely to operate with yet another different two-man pivot at the base of the midfield.

Guido Rodriguez has been a constant figure in that role in recent weeks, looking set to be joined by another body later on today – but Lopetegui could consider putting a player in that role despite it being an unfamiliar one to the West Ham star.

The player who could star in an unfamiliar role against Everton

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta has featured in numerous different roles already this season as the Hammers boss looks to extract more tangible rewards out of the 27-year-old.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta

He’s often played in a number 10 berth, or wide left and also featured as an advanced playmaker off the right-hand side against Forest last weekend, but he could be considered for a more deep-lying role this afternoon.

Whilst on the face of it, it may seem a bold call to drop one of your most creative players into a slightly deeper position, Paqueta has all the qualities to star in such a role – potentially providing the difference to end the club’s current rotten form.

In the Premier League this season, Paqueta, who’s previously been dubbed a “magician” by journalist Robbie Mustoe, has averaged 3.6 long balls completed per 90, having that eye for a forward ball into attacking areas – allowing him to find the runs of Crysencio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen.

The slightly deeper role could allow him to see more of the ball, subsequently handing him more opportunities to unlock the Everton backline – with Dyche’s side likely to sit in a low block and try to counter.

However, the Brazilian has the ability to prevent such a case from happening, with his tallies of 1.2 tackles won per 90 along with six recoveries made – making him a great option for Lopetegui to consider.

It could allow for the likes of Carlos Soler to feature as a number 10 and finally start to demonstrate why the club worked so tirelessly to bring him in from PSG over the summer.

Today is another huge game for Lopetegui and his side, looking to go into the last international break of the year on a high and try to resurrect their early-season slump.

Undoubtedly, it will be a tricky ask against a well-drilled Everton side, but should the Spaniard utilise Paqueta in a slightly different role, it could allow for that added edge that his side has often lacked in recent weeks.

Mominul Haque 'didn't sleep at all' leading into final day

Bangladesh Test captain “not surprised” that Ebadot Hossain stepped up with a six-for in the second innings

The prospect of a famous, history-making win kept Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque sleepless heading into the fifth morning of the first Test against New Zealand.Bangladesh ended day four in control with New Zealand only 17 runs ahead, with Ross Taylor at the crease, but only five wickets in hand. But that wasn’t a dominant enough position to let Mominul rest.”I didn’t sleep at all last night,” he said. “When we took the fifth wicket yesterday [on the fourth day], I thought that they might get out for a small total, but it could have been very different too. My message to the bowlers at the start of the [fifth] day was to repeat what we did in the last four days. We can’t go for wickets. You might ask how can they take wickets then? The plan in this Test was that we will not concede runs trying to take wickets. We wanted to create pressure in that way. Whether we get wickets or not.”The visitors picked up the last five New Zealand wickets in 9.2 overs while conceding just 15 runs. Mominul said that even before that Ebadot Hossain’s three-wicket burst on the fourth evening gave him the first genuine sign that they could be on to something big.Related

Reactions – 'This win will be cherished for a long time'

“When Ebadot suddenly took those three wickets, we felt that we were on to something special. It got a bit clearer after we bowled them out today,” he said. “I don’t think we were over-excited at any stage. You must have seen how calm and cool we were. We were feeling a bit of pressure when we went out to chase the 40 runs. But when Mushfiq hit that [winning] boundary, it did [feel] like we had won.”Mominul heaped praise on his bowlers – particularly Ebadot who finished with 6 for 46 in the second innings, the first six-for by a Bangladesh fast bowler in almost nine years. He also said that Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were great support acts in a four-man attack many believed wouldn’t be able to take 20 wickets.”I am not surprised that Ebadot did well,” he said. “I knew – and many others knew – that the day he gets it right, the opponent is finished. But obviously he wasn’t consistent [before the six-wicket haul]. The bowling coach has worked hard with him. I think we are rewarded for playing him consistently in the last few Tests.”Winning a Test match with just four bowlers is unbelievable. We won this game due to the bowlers. Taskin was outstanding in containing the runs. The way the youngster Shoriful has become an important member of the team in only his second Test is something else. On a wicket that wasn’t offering turn, Miraz [also] eked out the wickets.”Mominul said that he didn’t even allow himself to think about beating New Zealand in New Zealand previously – or at least till the fourth afternoon of the Mount Maunganui Test.”We didn’t think about the result. I mean, people would call me [mad] if they heard me talk about winning here,” he said of his side’s first Test win in the country. “We felt confident, we prepared well. We just stuck to the process. We wanted to bat for long. We wanted to bowl in one spot. These are parts of the process that I keep talking about.”
