Lungi Ngidi has his game face on for England series after fitness trials

Seamer emerges from strength and conditioning camp lighter, leaner and ready to lead South Africa attack

Lungi Ngidi has lost “probably four or five kilograms,” and some of his youthful spark after spending three weeks at a CSA strength and conditioning camp, intended to give him and three others time to work on their fitness.Ngidi was sent to the camp on the back of a hamstring injury, sustained in the first week of December in the Mzansi Super League, and has emerged from it lighter, leaner and ready for a leadership role in the upcoming ODI series against England. In the absence of Kagiso Rabada, who is being rested, and Dale Steyn or Chris Morris, who were not considered for this series, Ngidi is the most experienced frontline seamer in the attack. Only allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo has more ODI caps, which means Ngidi will be tasked with spearheading the pack. That reality combined with the lifestyle changes he has had to make in a bid to have an injury-free run may explain why Ngidi had his game-face, and not his usual grin, on ahead of his first training session with the national side on Sunday.”To be leading the attack, doesn’t feel any different. I’ve done it before,” Ngidi, said, trying to play down the responsibility that lies ahead in the next week. “There is always expectation playing for the national side. I am pretty used to that.”What he is less used to is the rigorous routine he was put through at the High Performance Centre, which included everything from fitness to food.”You speak to dieticians, work with strength and conditioning coaches and try find the best way to lose weight and to maintain strength and fitness,” Ngidi said. “There is a lot that goes into it behind the scenes. You’ve got to limit a lot more things that are harmful to your body.”The guidance on how to live like an elite athlete was provided by Adrian le Roux, a sports scientist who has worked with the Indian, South African and Kolkata Knight Riders teams, and who was put in charge of the recently completed camp. In attendance was Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Jon-Jon Smuts and Sisanda Magala.Consider those names and their frames (and the fact that Smuts was withdrawn from the T20 tour of India and Magala is unavailable to play in this England ODI series because both failed to pass fitness tests) and you will understand the company Ngidi was considered part of.While not necessarily overweight, the frequency of Ngidi’s injuries was cause for concern. Since his international debut in 2017, Ngidi has missed matches and entire series because of hip, abdomen, knee and hamstring injuries and has battled a stress fracture and a side strain. He is only 23, so the wear-and-tear that comes with age is unlikely to be affecting him yet. So what is the reason?”It’s hard to pinpoint,” Ngidi said. “We do a lot of work as national players but everyone’s formula is different and every person is different. I’m a bit bigger than the other guys to it probably takes a bit more out of my body to try and bowl. I’ve got to get the formula right.”Ngidi believes he has found a way to stay fit in shorter formats, which is why making a comeback for the white-ball leg of the England tour, rather than during the Tests, is ideal.”The format we are playing now doesn’t require long spells,” he said. “I’ve got my formula in the shorter format, I’ve got that nailed down. It’s just trying to find that formula for the longer format.”Whether that means South Africa will need to be more selective about Ngidi’s workload management in future will only be known later in the year. For now, it’s about getting Ngidi on the park, especially as he last played at international level three months ago, and watched the England Tests series from the sidelines, knowing his presence could have made a difference.”It’s always frustrating to be watching especially if we are not doing as well as we wanted to be doing,” he said. “From the side, a bit of frustration but the Test series is gone now, we’ve got to focus on the one-dayers.”With the fifty-over World Cup three years away and much rebuilding to be done before then, South Africa’s approach to ODIs may appear to be experimental. They head into this series with a new captain, Quinton de Kock, four uncapped players (fast bowler Lutho Sipamla, left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin and batsmen Janneman Malan and Kyle Verreynne) and an inexperienced attack. Beuran Hendricks, the other seamer in the squad, has played just four ODIs, leaving it to Ngidi to lead the attack. He spoke like someone ready to do it. Gone were the giggles of a boy just out of his teens, already living his dreams and in front of us was Ngidi 2.0, a man of maturity who would not even reveal which English wickets he would most value taking.”I would like all of them,” he said, barely cracking a smile. “To win this series would be a massive step for us, having not done as well as we would have wanted in the Test series. It’s a chance for us to redeem ourselves.”And a bigger chance for Ngidi, and his team-mates from the strength and conditioning camp, to do the same.

Ritu Moni flooded with memories of personal loss after career-best haul

Her one-time coach Muslim Uddin passed away soon after the team had arrived in Australia

Tears streamed down Bangladesh medium-pacer Ritu Moni’s face at the Junction Oval’s press conference room as she took her mind back to where her journey began – Bogra – and to Muslim Uddin, the man who helped her live her dream. It is in Bogra, a northwestern city in Bangladesh, that the dreams of many of the team’s current women’s cricketers started taking shape under local coach Muslim. As Moni, one of Muslim’s students, reflected on the career-best 4 for 18 – also the best so far at the ongoing T20 World Cup – she picked up against New Zealand on Saturday, memories of a personal loss – Muslim’s death on February 10 – left her sobbing inconsolably.ALSO READ: The toilet leading a women’s cricket revo-loo-tion”I started training under him and I am here today because of him,” Moni said after Bangladesh’s 17-run loss. “He passed away soon after we arrived in Australia for the World Cup. It is a big loss for all of us, considering how he helped so many of us to realise our dream of playing for Bangladesh. He was a great person, and has played a big part in my life.”We were to play a practice match a few days after his death, and it was quite difficult for me to get over the shock. But I told myself, ‘Muslim sir showed a lot of confidence in me. I must try to do my best in the tournament because it would be the best I can do for him.’ If he were alive today, he would have been able to see this day in my life.”In an international career spanning nearly eight years, Moni, now 27, has made 45 international appearances, scoring 292 runs and taking 17 wickets across the white-ball formats. The defining moment of her career, though, arrived on Sunday, her maiden four-for orchestrating New Zealand’s biggest collapse in T20Is – 8 for 25 – from the fall of the third wicket.By the innings break, Moni’s exploits, complemented brilliantly by captain Salma Khatun’s 3 for 7, had begun inspiring hopes of an unlikely upset in Group A as New Zealand set Bangladesh a modest target of 92.New Zealand’s slide began with the dismissal of Suzie Bates, their leading run-scorer in the format. Hurled at a gentle pace hovering just above 90kph, Moni’s inswinger on off had enough benignity to lure Bates to aim towards midwicket, only for her to lose her middle stump. Bates’ wicket in the 13th over was followed by Katey Matin’s in the next as she holed out to point, in a bid to force some pace on a slow, sun-baked Junction Oval track. It wasn’t long before Moni’s control and slowness through the air earned her two wickets in her fourth – and the innings’ 19th – over, with Fargana Hoque taking a stunning catch diving forward and Fahima Khatun gobbling up Amelia Kerr’s square drive with ease.”I didn’t do much, to be honest; just maintained my line and length,” Moni said, praising the role played by head coach Anju Jain and assistant coach Devika Palshikar, both former India players, in her growth as a medium-pacer. “Devika ma’am has been of incredible help. She makes sure that at the nets I am focused on my line and length. She asks me to bowl in, say, one area over after over.”And Anju ma’am says the same thing about bowling in my block, you know, to not try anything fancy. Sometimes simple and uncomplicated bowling can get you wickets, break partnerships, so that has been one instruction from our coaches I have tried to respect.”And Javed Omar [the former Bangladesh men’s Test cricketer, who was appointed manager of the women’s team last year] has also encouraged me to believe in myself. I hope that the confidence I have got from today’s performance takes me ahead in the future.”

Rangers can save millions on Tavernier successor with "highly-rated" star

Philippe Clement will head into his first summer transfer window as Glasgow Rangers manager with the aim of moving out some deadwood while bringing his own targets to the club.

Several players look to be departing upon the expiration of their contracts at the end of the season, which will free up some of the wage bill for Clement to utilise, but he will also need to sell players for transfer fees in order to improve his budget.

There should be no shortage of offers for a few of his first team regulars, although it appears a former Rangers manager has his eyes on not one, but two current players…

Rangers transfer news

According to the Daily Record, Steven Gerrard is eyeing a shock double swoop for James Tavernier and Connor Goldson this summer as he looks to bring the duo to the Middle East.

Both players, of course, worked under the former Liverpool captain during his three and a half year spell as Ibrox boss, helping the club win their first league title in a decade during the 2020/21 season.

Both players are on the wrong side of 30 and have two years left on their current deals, which suggests it could be a tempting proposition for Clement to move them on if he receives a sizeable transfer fee.

Goldson hasn’t quite been in the best of form in recent weeks, whereas Tavernier’s goal contributions have been vital for the Light Blues this season.

James Tavernier’s stats for Rangers this season

Once again, the defender is currently the top scorer in the squad, scoring 24 goals along with registering ten assists in what has been a career-best total for the former Newcastle United gem.

Tavernier notched his 131st goal of his career against Hibs in March, coming via one of his customary penalties which have formed the bulk of his goals. In the process, he became the highest-scoring defender in British football history, a stunning achievement for a right-back.

His goal involvements have been crucial to the club regaining their footing after a poor start under Michael Beale, and it appears as though Clement has placed his full trust in the 32-year-old to lead his team.

Among his teammates this term, Tavernier currently ranks first for overall Sofascore rating (8.08) in the top flight, while also ranking first for goals and assists (25), fifth for shots per game (2.1), first for big chances created (17) and for key passes per game (3.2), showing just how much of a positive influence he has in the current side.

Without his goal contributions, there is no telling where Rangers would be. One day, however, the club will need to find a replacement for him, which could prove to be extremely tough considering how much he offers, especially from an attacking perspective.

There will be players Clement has his eyes on in terms of potential long-term Tavernier successor, yet there could be someone who is currently out on loan who could forge his way back into the first-team picture next season – Adam Devine.

Adam Devine’s Rangers career so far

The right-back made his first team debut for Rangers during a clash against Dundee United towards the end of the 2021/22 season as Giovanni van Bronckhorst was looking to rest senior players due to their involvement in the run to the Europa League final.

His first start came a week later in the final match of the season against Hearts, and he impressed during a 3-1 win, succeeding with 100% of his dribbles while taking 79 touches, showing his willingness to get on the ball.

Rangers defender Adam Devine.

The youngster had to wait until December to feature for the first team again, as injuries meant Beale called him into the starting XI for three successive games, playing particularly well against Ross County a few days before Christmas.

Not only did he make four key passes during the tie, but Devine also succeeded with both of his dribbles, won four of his seven ground duels contested along with making two tackles, and it looked as though he had a bright future ahead of him.

In total, Devine played eight times for the senior side throughout the whole of last season, gaining vital experience, and it looked as though he could push on this term. After playing just nine minutes in the League Cup for the Light Blues, Clement sent the defender on loan to Motherwell in order to give him some much-needed game time.

Adam Devine’s statistics for Motherwell

The 21-year-old was hailed by former Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall after the Jags signed him on loan in 2021, describing him as “a highly rated young player” and his current spell at the Steelmen may have given Clement plenty to think about.

So far, he has played nine games for the club since his arrival in January, scoring once and grabbing an assist. Of the eight league matches, Devine has started in six of them, averaging 0.4 key passes per game, succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts, recovering three balls per game and winning 0.9 ground duels per game – an impressive success rate of 70% – which has proven his ability to perform on a consistent basis in the top flight.

While he may not offer the same sort of attacking qualities as Tavernier, Devine could be a solid option for Clement to call upon next season.

He still has plenty of time to develop as a player, while being homegrown will be advantageous with regard to European games, as the squad has to have a certain number of homegrown players present.

Hopefully, Tavernier still has a year or two left at Ibrox before he moves on to pastures new, but that’s not to say Devine should be intimidated by his presence.

Gaining minutes in certain matches next season could allow him to continue his rapid development while demonstrating his talents to Clement in the process, as the manager could save millions in the transfer market by trusting the youngster.

Ministério Público usa Copa América como argumento para retorno das aulas presenciais: 'Não há maior incoerência e hipocrisia'

Australian cricket set to be able to welcome crowds

The return of spectators to events next month bodes well for the cricket season later in the year

Crowds appear a certainty at Australian cricket grounds this summer and the case for the T20 World Cup has improved after the federal government’s announcement that some venues will be able to host up to 10,000 spectators for sporting events from July.At the moment the move only applies to grounds with a capacity below 40,000 so excludes the five major Test venues – MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval, Gabba and Perth Stadium – but would cover some of the smaller grounds used for cricket, including Hobart, the WACA and Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast, and is another positive step as sport continues its comeback in Australia. South Australia and Queensland state governments have also said they plan to reopen their borders in July as domestic travel restrictions are eased. The move to allow spectators back in reasonably significant numbers raises the likelihood that crowds may be able to attend international cricket and the Big Bash during the summer. It could also boost the chances of the T20 World Cup still taking place in October and November, although Prime Minister Scott Morrison said decisions over the larger grounds would take more time and for the World Cup there remains the logistical challenge of having 15 visiting teams in the country.ALSO READ: T20 World Cup fate under ‘very high risk’- Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts”This is going to be looked at over the next few weeks. For the larger ones [venues] I would venture that it would be the subject of a discrete approval for each venue that would be worked out with the Chief Health Officer in each state or territory,” Morrison said.”So by the time you get into July there may be that type of opportunity for the rules that apply to those under 40,000 carry over to those above 40,000. These will be practical, commonsense issues, work through by the medical expert panel over the next few weeks and I think they will give a great instruction.”The chance of crowds for big-ticket events during the season, especially the India series, would add another element to Cricket Australia’s financial planning which has seen them model for up to a 25-30% reduction in revenue if games were played behind closed doors. It could also increase the challenge for them in getting their budget plans approved by the Australian Cricketers’ Association who have already cast doubt on the bleak picture painted by the board.Cricket Australia recently announced a full fixture list for the 2020-21 season although with the caveats that much could change. As it stands Australia are scheduled to resume with a one-day series against Zimbabwe in August but that remains in significant doubt with the more likely resumption of international cricket being the women’s series against New Zealand in late September.Cricket Australia’s decision makers were encouraged by the announcement over crowds, albeit as the start of a long process towards working up plans for bigger venues set to host international and BBL cricket.Across the Tasman in New Zealand there are even fewer restrictions with full crowds able to attend this weekend’s rugby matches.

Derby hit the jackpot signing a star who’s now worth more than Sibley

Paul Warne proved, once again at League One level this time with Derby County, that he's a promotion specialist as a manager for teams wanting to break out of the third tier.

Amazingly, this most recent promotion success with the Rams – clinched with a final day win versus Carlisle United to secure that second golden automatic promotion spot – was Warne's fourth such achievement on his glittering managerial CV, with three of those four coming with Rotherham United before taking over the reins at Pride Park.

There have been plenty of stars in Derbyshire this campaign who have played their part in the promoted Rams leaping back up the second tier, with experienced heads such as Sonny Bradley and James Collins showing their know-how in the division with top-drawer displays.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who is 32 years of age himself, has arguably been the best of the more seasoned bunch for Warne's men with his transfer value rising subsequently, according to Football Transfers, even as he finds himself deep in the twilight years of his career.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's transfer to Derby

Joining on a free transfer in 2022 after his Sheffield Wednesday contract had expired, with the one-time Owls dud struggling at Hillsborough with just two goals and three assists registered from 18 games, the Rams took a punt on the 5 foot 11 winger coming good knowing it was risk-free to a degree with him coming in as a free agent.

His first campaign as an experienced option down the flanks for Warne's men showed off Mendez-Laing's class at the level in spurts, with the former Cardiff City man picking up eight goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

However, based on his second and more impactful season in 2023/24 playing a key role in Derby securing back up to the Championship, Mendez-Laing was only getting started when first introduced into the first-team ranks.

Now, the ageing forward will have a chance to strut his stuff again in the Championship and with a point to prove after exiting the division in 2022 after that aforementioned forgettable stint with the Owls.

Mendez-Laing's season in numbers

Labelled as being "crucial" to his team's promotion-chasing exploits by football journalist Jacob Hackett earlier in the campaign, Mendez-Laing has blown everyone's expectations out of the water at Pride Park with how much of a talisman he has turned into.

After the full-time whistle was sounded against Carlisle, Mendez-Laing ended the season overall with a very impressive haul of 27 goal contributions from 50 games including this pivotal winner away at Cambridge United the match before the home showdown with the Cumbrians to effectively seal promotion.

The ex-Bluebirds attacker would also be given the captain's armband for his side's final six games in the third tier, taking in the ecstasy of promotion knowing that he was a key cog in Warne's relentless machine with this polished Derby team managing to add yet another promotion to his loaded CV.

Warne didn't splash the cash in order to put together the intimidating squad that was eventually assembled, however, utilising free buys such as Mendez-Laing to his advantage on top of further free transfers in the form of Curtis Nelson, Conor Hourihane and more who have been of equal importance to the success story as the former Wednesday winger has.

These heroics for the Rams has seen Mendez-Laing's transfer value rise unsurprisingly, according to Football Transfers, with the electric Derby number 11 now worth even more than Louie Sibley despite the homegrown product being ten years younger than his teammate.

Mendez-Laing's transfer value in 2024

Once worth in the region of £1.7m back in 2018 when starring for Cardiff, Derby must still thank their lucky stars that they managed to pick up the standout 32-year-old on a free two years ago.

Now, after two excellent seasons back-to-back in his secure Derbyshire location, Mendez-Laing finds his valuation now stands at a pretty £775k which is more than what Peterborough United paid for him back in 2012 when signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the region of £258k.

Mendez-Laing was a new kid on the block at Posh 12 years ago – highly thought of in the Molineux youth set-up before moving on – yet with his career nearing its end soon, his valuation is now higher for Warne's men than his early playing days.

The eight-time Guatemala international also now finds his worth higher than that of Louie Sibley in Warne's camp currently, with the former Academy prospect turned regular first-teamer's valuation standing at a lesser £602k.

This is despite Sibley coming up trumps in key moments for Warne's men across the gruelling League One season as well, with the former Rotherham boss safe in the knowledge that both of them should be able to adjust to the tricky step-up a division without much difficulty.

Louie Sibley's season in numbers

In and around Derby since 2010, through all the youth set-ups up to the bright lights of the men's team, Sibley is living his boyhood dreams out playing for the Rams especially in a promotion-winning side.

The versatile 22-year-old, who can play down the wing or through the middle of park, would amass seven goals and five assists across all competitions with two of those five assists coming right at the end of the season when games became more tense and pressurised.

Setting up Mendez-Laing for the crucial winner at the Abbey Stadium before the big clash on the final day, Sibley also managed to pop up with a goal against Stevenage in February when the tense contest looked set to finish as a stalemate.

Regardless, Sibley finds his worth all the way down at £602k, even with his value once sitting at an extortionate £5.9m when first being touted for big things at Pride Park back in 2021.

Warne will want both Mendez-Laing and Sibley to turn it up a notch moving into the Championship, using their fantastic individual campaigns in an unforgettable collective season as a platform to become even better in the second tier which could see their values rise higher and higher.
