Chelsea eyeing move to sign "big-name" player to replace Conor Gallagher

After another nightmare season, Chelsea have already turned their attention towards the summer transfer window and handing Mauricio Pochettino a replacement in the event of some potential exit news for the Argentine.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have often been in the headlines due to their incomings since the beginning of Todd Boehly's ownership, but that could change this summer. Despite spending an endless amount of money to first build a squad for Graham Potter and then for Pochettino, the American has been forced to watch on as the London giants fall to consecutive campaigns stuck in the Premier League's mid-table.

"Basically a done deal" – 19 y/o set to leave Chelsea on permanent deal

The Blues are set to net a hefty fee too

ByBen Browning Mar 10, 2024

With poor performances on the pitch and the Premier League not exactly afraid to punish a side for any Financial Fair Play wrongdoings, Chelsea could now endure a summer in which departures steal the headlines over incomings. And that may include Conor Gallagher, according to Graeme Bailey for HITC, with Chelsea sticking to their plan to sell the midfielder in the coming months.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

It's not the news that Pochettino will be wanting to hear, having praised Gallagher so highly earlier this season. The Chelsea boss previously said:

"I think he is a player with a great commitment to the team. He is always trying to compensate in every situation, in offensive and defensive situations. It's priceless to have a player like him."

As Gallagher departs, however, the Blues will have room for a "big-name" replacement it seems. According to Bailey, Chelsea appreciates Frenkie de Jong, Vitinha and Bruno Guimaraes, whilst Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone are being looked at to replace Gallagher this summer. Bailey posted the news on X, saying:

With an impressive list of targets, Chelsea could finally find the catalyst behind an eventual revival following a period to forget at Stamford Bridge.

How Chelsea's targets compare to Gallagher

In a frustrating season, Gallagher has been one of the few bright sparks under Pochettino, creating more questions about the decision to show the England international the exit door this summer. Here's how he has compared to a couple of the Blues' reported targets so far this season:

That said, if Chelsea manage to lure either Guimaraes or De Jong to Stamford Bridge, then sacrificing Gallagher could be seen as a wise choice in the middle of Pochettino's midfield. On paper, the stats suggest that either of those two options would slot perfectly into the middle of the park alongside Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez to form a solid trio.

As the summer approaches, Gallagher's potential exit may quickly prove to have quite the knock-on effect at Chelsea.

Everton struck gold by offloading £25m star who’s goalless this season

It's well documented that Everton have struggled with their finances in recent seasons, with the club suffering with a six-point deduction this campaign.

They've found themselves in trouble with the Premier League due to their erratic spending in previous years, with the club also investing a large amount of money towards their new stadium.

However, their poor business in the market is certainly eye-catching with the club spending over £20m on players such as Yerry Mina, Yannick Bolasie and Jean-Phillippe Gbamin, with the trio leaving the club on free transfers at the end of their contracts and failing to provide value for money.

Everton defender Yerry Mina.

In recent times, the club have operated more efficiently, buying youngsters such as Jarrad Branthwaite, with the defender joining from Carlisle United for £1m back in 2020, with the 20-year-old now subject to £75m interest from Manchester United.

The club have also conducted good business in selling players in recent years, with the club doing the right thing by selling one player for a hefty fee despite his lack of impact at Goodison Park.

Moise Kean's stats at Everton

In August 2019, the Toffees completed the signing of 19-year-old striker Moise Kean, on a deal rising to £27.5m – with the Italian having a lot of potential to live up to after two goals in his first three international games.

The striker made 33 appearances during his first campaign in English football, with Kean only managing two goals during the 2019/20 campaign.

However, he would start the next campaign in good goalscoring form for the Toffees, scoring twice in his first four outings, before agreeing a loan deal to join Ligue 1 side PSG for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

The move would be a success for the youngster, with the marksman scoring on 17 occasions during his one season at the Parc des Princes – but the French side would not make the deal permanent with Kean returning to Goodison at the end of his loan move.

Kean would feature twice at the start of the 2021/22 season, before leaving Everton once more to re-join Juventus on a two-year loan deal, with the Italian giants having an option to make it a permanent.

The Old Lady decided to take up the option in the loan move, with the now 24-year-old re-joining the club for £25m – just £2.5m less than they sold him four years prior. A brilliant piece of business by Everton, considering his lack of goals in England.

Moise Kean's stats in 2023/24

Nearly one year on from the 6-foot striker's permanent return to Italy, he has failed to replicate his form that saw Everton decide to fork out £27.5m for his signature.

In Serie A this season, the Italian has failed to score a single goal in his 14 appearances, with his market value of £14m as per Transfermarkt now less than Everton's latest big-money forward, Beto.

The Portuguese forward joined Everton from Udinese for a fee in the region of £30m, with the 26-year-old scoring just four times for the Toffees in a rather inconsistent debut campaign.

beto-everton-dominic-calvert-lewin-dyche-dwight-mcneil-injury-premier-league

His market value has since dropped to £18.7m according to Transfermarkt, but his goal return this season is far superior to Kean's with Everton doing the right thing in replacing the Italian with the 6 foot 4 attacker.

When delving into the stats of the two strikers, Sean Dyche may well have hit the jackpot with Beto's stats per game much more positive than those of Kean.

During the 2023/24 season, Everton's number 14 has averaged 4.2 aerials won per 90, with his tally over three times higher than the Italian's, with Kean only able to manage 1.3.

The Portuguese striker also has the edge over the Juventus forward, with his tally of 1.7 tackles more than Kean's 1.3 – with Beto a better fit for Dyche's system of pressing from the front, one of the reasons the Toffees have the best defensive record outside the Premier League's top four.

Despite Beto not scoring as many goals as the Everton faithful would've liked, it's clear the club conducted great business by allowing Kean to leave and replaced him with a player who's more suited to the manager's playstyle.

Mitchell Marsh received a succinct response from Australia coach Justin Langer after he suffered a broken right hand from punching the dressing room wall at the WACA on Sunday.”He just told me I’m an idiot basically. He was disappointed for me,” Marsh said as he spoke to reporters with his right hand in a cast. “It certainly will be an isolated incident, that’s for sure, and it won’t be happening again.”Marsh faces up to six weeks on the sidelines which is likely to rule him out of both Tests against Pakistan and he may just get one more Sheffield Shield match before it breaks for the BBL in mid-December.”It’s pretty uncharacteristic of me to want to punch a wall. I’m a pretty easy-going sort of bloke,” he said. “I’m just disappointed really, gutted. The feeling of letting your team-mates down and not being able to be a part of the journey for the next four to six weeks, that was the point I wanted to stress to the lads, that I was really sorry and it’s not an example I wanted to be setting. They got around me. They still love me, so it’s all good.”Marsh was an incumbent in the Test side following his recall for the final match of the Ashes although there was no guarantee that he would have been retained for the Pakistan series.Australia’s second Test assignment of the season is a three-match series against New Zealand which begins in Perth on December 12.Western Australia could now be without their captain for half of the Sheffield Shield campaign. Following the BBL, the competition resumes in mid-February for the final four rounds.

KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw dazzle with fifties; Yuzvendra Chahal takes 3 for 27

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant could not put in big scores for their teams

Prithvi Shaw goes down the ground•BCCI

KL Rahul’s blazing half-century against Punjab gave Karnataka their third win in as many matches in the Super League of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20. Prithvi Shaw played a similar knock for Mumbai as they defeated Jharkhand in the other Group B game.Meanwhile, in Group A, Haryana beat Delhi with the help of Yuzvendra Chahal’s three-for and replaced Baroda at the top of the table. Baroda lost to Maharashtra earlier in the day.Karnataka v PunjabRahul’s unbeaten 48-ball 84 trumped Mandeep Singh’s 76 off 50 balls as Karnataka beat Punjab by seven wickets. In response to Punjab’s 163 for 6, Rahul got Karnataka off to a flyer and despite Devdutt Padikkal scoring 2 off three balls, the duo added 33 in just 2.1 overs for the first wicket. Rahul kept going for his shots and brought up his fifty off 22 balls.Along with Manish Pandey, Rahul took the side past 100 with a 60-run stand for the third wicket. Pandey fell for a 29-ball 33 but by then his side required just 25 from 29 balls, which they knocked off with 12 balls to spare.Shubman Gill, who was released from the Test side along with Rishabh Pant on Friday, managed only 11 off nine balls, as Ronit More took 4 for 27, his best T20 figures.Mumbai v JharkhandSmarting from their defeat against Tamil Nadu, Mumbai rode on Shaw’s 39-ball 64 to take down Jharkhand by five wickets.Chasing 171, Shaw targeted the arc between long-on and deep midwicket and took Mumbai to 50 in 5.2 overs. He got to his fifty off 28 balls with a straight six off left-arm spinner Sonu Singh before dragging a sweep on to his stumps.Despite Shaw’s innings, Mumbai still needed 64 from 36 balls. However, a 26-run 16th over took the game away from Jharkhand. It started with Shivam Dube hitting offspinner Utkarsh Singh for three successive sixes, and while Dube perished attempting the fourth, Siddhesh Lad smashed the fifth ball for four before collecting two off the sixth.Earlier, Kumar Deobrat struck 58 off just 30 balls with the help of eight fours and two sixes, but once he was dismissed, Mumbai didn’t let the other batsmen score freely. Jharkhand’s eventual 170 for 5 didn’t prove enough.Maharashtra v BarodaRuturaj Gaikwad, Kedar Jadhav and Azim Kazi all scored in 40s before their bowlers skittled Baroda for 98 to give Maharashtra a 67-run win.Continuing his good form, Gaikwad smashed seven fours and a six in his 27-ball 47 before he was trapped lbw by Swapnil Singh. Jadhav (47* off 42) and Azim (48* off 33) then added 87 in 61 balls in an unbroken third-wicket stand to take them to a competitive 165 for 2.Baroda’s chase never really took off. Samad Fallah dismissed Aditya Waghmode for a first-ball duck in the opening over. And when Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya too fell cheaply, Baroda were struggling at 37 for 3 in the seventh over.Kedar Devdhar (27 off 20) was the only one to offer some resistance but once he was run out, the rest of the batting just collapsed.Haryana v DelhiHimanshu Rana starred with 59 off 40 balls as Haryana beat Delhi by 30 runs in the north India derby.Batting first, Haryana lost their openers in the first two overs but Rana and Shivam Chauhan (47 off 31) added 105 in 66 balls for the third wicket. While they got out in back-to-back overs, the incoming batsmen kept finding the boundaries and powered the side to 181 for 6.Navdeep Saini had an uneventful return from the groin injury, conceding 21 from three overs without picking up any wicket.Bolstered by Pant’s addition, Delhi would have backed themselves to chase the target down but the wicketkeeper-batsman ended up consuming 32 balls for his 28. By the time he got out, the asking rate had gone past 13. Nitish Rana showed some fight with a 25-ball 37 but it came a too little too late. For Haryana, Chahal was the most successful bowler, registering 3 for 27, his best figures in the seven matches he has played this tournament.

Spurs must ruthlessly drop 4/10 star who was saved by Son & Johnson

Late-stage drama has been a prominent factor behind the respective campaigns of Tottenham Hotspur and Luton Town, with the typical contrasting results coming into play when the teams clashed on Saturday afternoon.

Indeed, Heung-min Son bagged a late winner after Tottenham had fallen behind in the early stage, with the skipper's deflected strike spinning a bleakly familiar narrative for the valiant Hatters on their first campaign back in England's first division.

Heung-min Son scores for Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou's side had restored parity early after the break after Issa Kabore turned into his own net following Brennan Johnson's cross.

The Wales international was introduced after the break, and while Son took the limelight with his late winner, Johnson deserves all the plaudits for his difference-making display.

Brennan Johnson's performance vs Luton

Son bagged to take his seasonal tally up to 15 goals and eight assists from 26 Premier League appearances, taking Harry Kane's mantle as the club's talisman with resounding success this year.

The South Korean star was the man to initiate the late winner, but it was Johnson who cleverly crafted a pass to set his skipper on his way.

Signed from Nottingham Forest for £47.5m last summer, Johnson has now chalked up four goals and seven assists from just 15 top-flight starts in a Lilywhite shirt, really turning the tide after replacing Dejan Kulusevski at half-time.

Kulusevski has so often been essential to Tottenham's performance this season but Johnson might just have played himself into his teammates' position, influential yet again.

Dejan Kulusevski must be ruthlessly dropped

Kulusevski has been a key component of Tottenham's efforts this term but he faltered against Luton, and after being hooked for Johnson at half-time, Postecoglou clearly played the right move given the Welshman's influential moments.

As per Sofascore, Kulusevski took 32 touches across his 45 minutes of action but completed just 67% of his passes – albeit making three key passes for his peers.

The Sweden international also won just three of his eight contested duels, was dribbled past and failed to make a single dribble himself, but he was wasteful and ineffective on too many occasions and will be displeased with his effort.

Football.london correspondent Alasdair Gold was particularly scathing in his post-match comments, branding Kulusevski with a 4/10 match rating and writing: 'A poor pass in a great position early on set Luton away for their early goal. Did play Werner through with a good pass about 10 minutes later and played Son through to hit both posts, but his passing was otherwise off though and he did not reappear for the second half.'

While the one-time Parma man has received much praise this season for his energy and enthusiasm, even described as the "engine" of Postecoglou's system by Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir, it's hard to ignore Johnson's continual impactful performances right now.

Dejan Kulusevski for Tottenham

The shrewd recruitment since the end of last season enables Postecoglou to bench such a player as Kulusevski – who is considered Tottenham's most valuable player by CIES Football Observatory.

Luton are deceptively tricky customers and Spurs should be delighted with a hard-fought victory to continue the fight for Champions League football.

Kulusevski has been integral this season, but he's fallen from form and Johnson must now be provided with centre stage. He's really starting to come into his own.
