Leeds’ red card last Saturday shows why change is needed to refereeing

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Enough is enough and it’s time for a change.

With the news that Gaetano Berardi’s red card at Millwall has been rescinded, it’s got a lot of people talking about the ramifications.

One of those people is former Leeds United defender Danny Mills. Whilst he might be happy that the red card was overturned, he wasn’t entirely convinced that the league did everything they could in the situation.

What’s he said?

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills said that he wanted more of an explanation as to why the referee gave the decision that he did:

“I thought if you were making a deliberate attempt for the ball or it wasn’t deliberate act to bring somebody down, then it’s just a penalty. I don’t understand where the red card’s come from. I think the red card wasn’t warranted, it wasn’t necessary.

“What I would like, what I’m sure everybody would like, is an explanation as to why he was sent off. What, under the laws of the game, did the referee decide was a red card offence? That would be most impressive to hear, but don’t hold your breath.”

Mills is absolutely spot on with this. There hasn’t been enough of an explanation as to what exactly has gone on, both with the red card and the rescinding of it. Even Leeds United’s statement didn’t go into much detail.

It was a bizarre situation as a whole as the Swiss defender saw red despite barely touching Tom Bradshaw.

What should we do about it?

Seeing as the NFL is currently in town as part of their International Series, it’s time that we took a leaf out of their book.

Every time an infraction is committed the referee announces over the stadium PA system exactly what has happened and what the punishment is.

You could even take the rugby example with ref-link and have the crowd hear exactly what the discussions are.

Even if you don’t want to go to those lengths of doing it as the game is going on, then keeping the fans updated afterwards is the least that they can do.

A simple red card and a statement simply isn’t good enough anymore. It’s time that the governing bodies of football at all levels start treating fans properly.

Manchester United could be on the road to relegation, Sam Allardyce claims

You’d have to go back to 1974 to see the last time Manchester United were dumped from the English top flight, but given how they’re currently performing, there’s a very real chance we’ll see history repeat itself in 2020.Following their 1-0 defeat to Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United side on Sunday, the 20-time champions of England have slumped to just two points above the relegation zone where Everton, Norwich City and Watford are currently keeping the seats warm.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The concept of United suffering relegation seems fairly alien to most that have only ever experienced the wonder that was Sir Alex Ferguson and the success that he brought.

However, after years of unrest following his departure, and as they tail off in a new direction under one of the stars that helped develop the invincible façade, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, there’s a creeping feeling that maybe, just maybe, the unthinkable could happen at the “Theatre of Dreams.â€

Speaking to talkSPORT, former England manager Sam Allardyce recalled the last time the Red Devils dropped into the second tier and explains why he thinks there’s a chance they could suffer the same fate again…

Bold. Very bold indeed.

Man Utd fans have their fingers crossed over Glazer family report

Could this be the beginning of the end? Manchester United fans have had to put up with the Glazer family for a number of years now, and every time it has looked even remotely likely they could be heading out, it just hasn’t turned to be the case.

Earlier this year, reports had suggested a Saudi Arabian firm were interested in taking over the Red Devils, but that did not transpire in the end. However, it appears United may be saying goodbye to at least one of the Glazers in the near future.

According to The Sun, Kevin Glazer – son of Malcolm who took control of the club 14 years ago – is “set to cash out” of Old Trafford, after documents were recently filed with the USA’s Securities and Exchange Commission in proof of him converting all his B class shares into A class stock.

The report adds the A shares are available to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange, and that the “only conceivable reason is to sell up”. The Sun further notes however that the move does not necessarily mean the prospect of new owners anytime soon for United.

After hearing the news, Red Devils fans flooded to Twitter, and judging by their reaction, there is a definite sense of hope and wilful optimism that this could potentially lead to some massive change at the top.

Check out some of the reaction of United fans below:

Leeds fans can’t get enough of this moment from Ben White

As if he couldn’t endear himself to the fans anymore.

Ben White certainly has made a great impression in his first couple of months in a Whites shirt since joining on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.

He’s been lauded with praise from the fans, and has even picked up a Player of the Month award to go with it.

He’s been getting plaudits from the pundits as well, with former Leeds man Noel Whelan saying that he could go on to reach the heights of £80m Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

There was one incident though in this weekend’s game against Birmingham that has really got fans talking.

In the second half and with the visitors bearing down on goal, White threw himself in front of an effort from Alvaro Gimenez and received a bit of a whack in the process for his troubles.

Leeds supporters loved the commitment that he showed in defending the cause, even though he isn’t technically one of their players.

Here’s what they had to say.

On the day that Leeds celebrated their 100th anniversary, you wonder if he’s going to go down in the same breath as some of the legends that have gone before him at Elland Road with moments like this. Although he may have to stick around for a lot longer than his one season on loan to find out.

Everton fans are hoping that Djibril Sidibe stays at right-back

Everton fans are praying that Djibril Sidibe remains in the starting XI over Seamus Coleman after the Frenchman put in an impressive display against West Ham United.

Sidibe was part of an Everton defence which managed to keep a clean sheet for the first time since the second game of the season. Against the Hammers, he made four tackles and had 63 touches on the ball – only Lucas Digne had more with 75, per SofaScore.

The Monaco loanee has had to settle for Carabao Cup appearances thus far, playing twice in the competition. His start over the weekend was his first in the Premier League, and fans are hoping it won’t be his last.

Some supporters have stated it’s “not even a debate”, whilst others are begging that Marco Silva does not change the winning team at all.

Sidibe’s opportunity came as a result of Coleman’s sending off against Burnley. To add to the Irishman’s woes, he was sent off again 10 days later after a blatant handball for his country against Switzerland.

Coleman will be available for Silva this weekend, though, should he wish to start the 31-year-old.

However, fans have the opposite in mind and believe now is the time for the Monaco loanee to make the spot his own.

Here’s what some of them had to say…

Tottenham fans chastise Danny Rose, Serge Aurier and Christian Eriksen

Loads of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to chastise three of their own players after the 2-1 defeat against Liverpool – Christian Eriksen, Serge Aurier and Danny Rose.

The trio all started at Anfield on Sunday as Spurs threw away a 1-0 lead to lose to the European champions, and were the focus of a lot of Spurs supporters’ frustrations.

Rose made an error leading to Jordan Henderson’s equaliser after he missed his header in the box, allowing the ball to bounce nicely for the England midfielder who slammed home.

His full-back partner, Aurier, then gave away a penalty after a foul on Sadio Mane, which allowed Mohamed Salah to power the ball in from 12 yards and hand Jurgen Klopp’s side yet another win.

In Eriksen’s case, the Dane didn’t have a single shot on target, nor did he record a single key pass or a dribble on an afternoon where he was practically non-existent.

Let’s see what the Tottenham fans on Twitter have been saying about the trio…

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk’s comments show just how well he’s done

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has talked up his side following their 0-0 stalemate in Saturday’s Yorkshire derby.

His post-game thoughts go to great lengths in highlighting just how much of a brilliant job he’s done so far at Hillsborough.

What’s he said?

Both teams missed an opportunity to take possession of the Championship lead at the weekend as first-placed West Bromwich Albion slipped up at home to Charlton Athletic.

The Owls had one of the best chances of the match in the second half when Steven Fletcher rifled an attempt off the crossbar while Leeds United could have won it late on if wing-back Ezgjan Alioski’s header was inches to one side.

Speaking after the match, the 40-year-old said:

“We were very unlucky not to have won the game.

“If you keep putting in performances like that and pushing that standard like that, you’ll be able to win games, dominate games and regularly be in situations where you take points whilst we’re still growing.

“We were up against a team that has been together for two seasons under that manager and we have been together for eight weeks and the way we went about it, you’d have thought it was the other way round.

“I was very proud of that performance.”

Major encouragements

Wednesday currently occupy a playoff position in fifth place as they remain three points behind West Brom.

Under Monk, they have lost just one of eight matches, and that came in the absence of their top goalscorer, Fletcher.

It means the south Yorkshire side have picked up 15 points from a possible 24, which prior to the game had the former Leeds boss well on track to smash all of his recent predecessors out of the water.

The Owls haven’t been able to reach the Championship playoffs since 2017 recording successive seasons languishing in midtable, so the fact that Monk has them in and around the top five at this early stage is only a compliment on just how well he’s done in such a short space of time.

In addition to that, he’s not been able to fully stamp his own mark on the squad after joining at the start of September, outside of the transfer window.

All the more impressive.

Ian Wright urges Man United star Marcus Rashford to keep working after cup stunner

Ian Wright has hyped up Marcus Rashford after the Manchester United forward knuckle-balled his team into the next round of the Carabao Cup after beating Chelsea for the second time this season 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old handed United the lead with a penalty, his first since missing against Norwich at the weekend, after Marcos Alonso clumsily fouled Daniel James. United currently top the table for most penalties received in the Premier League, though their conversation rate (33.3 per cent) is the second worst.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Rashford’s upturn in form has seen him score three goals in his previous two appearances in all competitions and comes off the back of widespread criticism and questions over his suitability as a no.9 from the likes of Michael Owen, Jose Mourinho, Roy Keane and Graeme Souness.

Wright, who’s also a keen follower of Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah and knows a thing or two about scoring goals, having netted 163 in his career, posted about Rashford’s performance on Twitter and encouraged the in-form youngster forward…

We all need a Wright in our lives.

Leeds fans wish they signed Romaine Sawyers last summer

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been expressing regret after Romaine Sawyers put in a brilliant performance for West Bromwich Albion in their 2-0 win against Stoke City on Monday.

The Whites were apparently interested in the former Brentford midfielder this summer, but he ended up at the Baggies.

It’s hard to disagree with fans who are regretting that the club didn’t sign him as he’s been brilliant for the Midlands club so far this term.

Indeed, the midfielder boasts a pass success rate of 92 per cent, which is the third-highest percentage in the entire division – only being topped by Fulham’s Tim Ream and Harry Arter.

Unfortunately, Leeds missed their opportunity to sign the 28-year-old, and he’s now a key player for one of the Whites’ biggest promotion rivals as he’s started every game for table-topping West Brom after signing for £3m.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying about Sawyers on social media…

Tottenham defender Danny Rose set to run down his contract

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose has confirmed that he intends to leave the club when his contract expires, per The London Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

The England international says that Spurs attempted to sell him in the summer – he was spotted at Watford’s training ground on transfer deadline day – after being told that he would not be given a new contract.

And Rose now says that, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season, he will not be committing to fresh terms.

He said: “It’s pretty obvious what happened (during the summer). People upstairs at Tottenham were trying to do what they were trying to do. I’ve said, I’ve got 18 months left on my contract and I’m not going anywhere until my contract has finished.

“In January, you’re probably going to hear something (regarding a possible departure). I’m telling you right now that I’m not going anywhere until my contract is finished.

“(Spurs chairman) Daniel Levy told me in the summer there was no new contract for me at Tottenham, which is fine. I respect that. We move on.

“My contract is up in 18 months’ time and I’ll leave the football club then. People can save their time trying to get stuff ready for January about me being sold.

“Because I can tell you now: it ain’t happening. I know what people were trying to do in the summer… There were no bids — that was rubbish.”

The worst possible timing

Spurs haven’t won a league game since September.

They haven’t won away from home since January.

The club are currently 14th in the Premier League and 11 points behind the top four.

This is not the time for personal revelations about the transfer window.

Admittedly, Rose is currently on England duty so he is technically freed from his club responsibilities but, surely he knows that this comes at the worst possible time.

Spurs need to be presenting a united front, a togetherness that speaks to the supporters and tells them that they are working as hard as possible to steady the ship and come out of a slump that has led to reports that Mauricio Pochettino could lose his job.

Instead, Rose is in the press, talking about how he was nearly pushed out of the club and how he is likely to stay for at least another season essentially against their wishes.

This is despite a decline in form that has seen Rose collect an average rating of 6.61 from WhoScored thus far this season. He has already collected five yellow cards in just nine games.

He has no real right to open his mouth in the manner he has and this is unlikely to endear him any further to the fans who are paying to watch him, and the rest of the Spurs team, struggle on a weekly basis.
