Villarreal ‘accepted’ Spurs offer for Torres

Writing on Twitter, SIC Noticias reporter Pedro Sepulveda has dropped a Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Villarreal star Pau Torres.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing Torres move…

As per reliable sources like Veronica Brunati and The Times, Spurs are indeed eyeing a move for the Spain international as they seek to add at least two new centre-backs to Nuno Espirito Santo’s ranks.

They have already secured a deal for 2020/2021 Serie A MVP award-winner Cristian Romero but are yet to find his complimentary centre-half partner or back up option.

Now, Sepulveda has brought an update on Tottenham’s pursuit of Torres.

The Latest: Sepulveda drops Torres claim…

Writing on Twitter, the reporter has shared some Spurs news involving the 24-year-old and Fabio Paratici’s advances.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He believes that Villarreal ‘accepted an offer’ from Tottenham amounting to around €45 million (£38.2m) plus an extra €5 million (£4.2m) in add-ons, but Torres himself has swiftly rejected the move.

“Pau Torres refused to go to Spurs,” he explained on social media.

“Villarreal accepted an offer of 45 million euros + 5 million in goals but the defender refused to join the English club.

“Pau Torres says he wants to play in the Champions League.”

The Verdict: Blow for Spurs?

While a move for the 6 foot 3 powerhouse was always an uphill battle, we believe losing out on Torres is a blow for Nuno.

Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery, now manager of Villarreal, is certainly a huge fan – with the 49-year-old head coach branding Torres ‘amazing’ in an interview with football.london.

The centre-back was also a mainstay and one of the stars of Spain’s run to the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

Still in his early 20s, Torres also would’ve came with the potential for a big sell-on value in years to come.

Matthew Hayden has admitted he has not considered retirement despite growing speculation over his career following an extended lean spell. However, Hayden, who scored only 47 runs in the opening two games of the series defeat to South Africa, has refused to look beyond the third Test in Sydney starting on Saturday.Hayden was picked to open despite the strong claims of the state batsmen Phillip Hughes, Chris Rogers and Michael Klinger. Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, has begun to hear calls for his sacking after persevering with the 37-year-old Hayden, who has 313 runs at 22.35 since returning from a heel injury in India.Hayden said he hadn’t thought about stepping down. “I’m not sure going after you lose a series, in the middle of the series, would be the right time to go,” he told AAP. “There’s absolutely no doubt about that. So I didn’t think about it for a minute.”Two-nil down in the series, five days of cricket left, Australia need to play well and I need to be a part of that. And then whatever comes after that, that’s a new day.”Hayden said he understood that he needed to get runs. “But I think there’s a lot more facets to your game than just pure runs and I think experience in the side does make a difference,” he said. “As part of my role I see this next five days, no matter how the result goes for me individually and us collectively, it’s very important to gain the level of perspective that a 15-year career can hold in a dressing room.”Glenn McGrath, whose charity foundation will benefit during the Sydney Test, said he would pick Hayden in any Australian team. Pink stumps will be used during the match and supporters have been encouraged to wear pink to raise awareness of breast cancer. McGrath’s wife Jane died as a result of the disease last year.

Spurs XI vs Pacos - team and injury news

Tottenham Hotspur begin their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign later this evening.

Nuno Santo and his squad head to Portugal to face Pacos de Ferreira for the first leg of their qualifying clash at the Estadio Capital do Movel Stadium.

The 47-year-old head coach has already confirmed that he will be making vast changes for the encounter, with none of Sunday’s starting XI that defeated defending champions Manchester City expected to feature from the off.

That means plenty of Spurs’ fringe players and youth prospects are likely to start tonight but what sort of XI could we see from the Portuguese?

Football FanCast have predicted tonight’s lineup…

As mentioned above, there should be a whopping 11 changes from Sunday’s 1-0 victory over City, though Harry Kane has not travelled and Joe Rodon is out through injury, as per football.london.

With club captain Hugo Lloris earning a rest, there is likely to be a competitive debut for summer signing Pierluigi Gollini, who has joined on loan from Atalanta to be the Frenchman’s back-up this season.

His former teammate back in Italy, Cristian Romero, is another who looks set to start after Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez guided Spurs to a clean sheet at the weekend.

The 23-year-old colossus could partner youth product Maksim Paskotsi, who featured in many of the Lilywhites’ preseason matches as a right-back under Nuno. However, his primary position is in the middle and without Rodon, the young Estonian could be trusted at centre-back in what would be his senior debut.

Two of the full-backs named on the bench on Sunday, Ben Davies and Matt Doherty, should make a straight swap with Sergio Reguillon and Japhet Tanganga.

Meanwhile, in midfield, we could see a three-man engine room of Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and another Hotspur Way academy star, Nile John.

They’ll replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp (who has not travelled) and Dele Alli, whilst there’s no place for Tanguy Ndombele once again as uncertainty over his long-term future in north London continues to rumble on.

There could also be a third debutant in the starting XI, with Spanish winger Bryan Gil in line to feature from the off. He may partner the returning Ryan Sessegnon in the attack.

The versatile £25m wide man has not played for Spurs since March 2020 – the 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the Champions League – and enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at their Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim last term.

Whilst Nuno has confirmed that 17-year-0ld “diamond” Dane Scarlett will lead the line in the absence of Kane and Heung-min Son.

Man Utd must keep hold of Victor Lindelof

Manchester United have added significant strength to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team squad in the current window, but if some reports are to materialise, they could be about to undo some of their hard work.

What’s the story?

After bringing in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane on big-money deals this summer, 90min have claimed the Red Devils are now looking to offload several fringe players to make room for further additions.

The report stated that the likes of Phil Jones, Nemanja Matic and Alex Telles are deemed surplus to requirements by the Old Trafford hierarchy, but a surprise name was also on the list.

Victor Lindelof is now reportedly available for transfer following the arrival of Varane in the red half of Manchester, although sanctioning his departure could be a decision that new football director John Murtough comes to regret.

Solskjaer would be fuming

The 27-year-old initially struggled to adapt to the pace and physical demands of the Premier League following his arrival from Benfica back in 2017, leading to much criticism coming his way during his first 12 months on English shores.

However, the Sweden international slowly adapted to the new challenge, becoming a permanent fixture at the heart of the club’s defence under former United boss Jose Mourinho and his successor Solskjaer.

Mourinho once hailed the Swede as ‘brave’ and a ‘fantastic example’ after he played while injured in a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace three years ago, and his fighting spirit, coupled with his ability on the ball (88.4% passing accuracy throughout his career), has won over many of his critics since.

Nevertheless, the signing of Varane was rightly heralded as much-needed and a big upgrade on the £21.6m-rated gem, although there are not many players who can hold their own against the World Cup-winning defender’s impressive CV and skillset.

While Varane is expected to take Lindelof’s place in the starting XI, the Scandinavian should still have a big part to play in United’s fortunes this season.

In a campaign which can exceed 60 games in all competitions, it’s impossible to win a major trophy with only 11 quality players. Solskjaer will need a squad full of top-class talent if he’s going to bring silverware back to Old Trafford, and he will surely be fuming if his third-choice centre-back is sold.

Lindelof’s name may not be guaranteed to be on the team sheet anymore, but he’s still sure to play a big part for the Red Devils despite his diminished role in the squad, and his potential exit could be a nightmare for the 20-time English champions – especially if Varane or Harry Maguire succumb to long-term injury.

Ghai attacks "illegal" Kenyan board

Former Kenyan Cricket Association boss Sharad Ghai has launched a remarkable attack on the current board, accusing chairman Samir Inamdar of putting his globe-trotting ahead of the interest of the game

Cricinfo staff26-Jan-2009Former Kenyan Cricket Association boss Sharad Ghai has launched a remarkable attack on the current board, accusing chairman Samir Inamdar of putting his globe-trotting ahead of the interest of the game.Ghai was ousted in 2005 after bitter disputes with players and stakeholders. Despite that, Ghai, who many suspect of still harbouring ambitions to return to national administration, claimed that Kenyan cricket was now at an all-time low.Speaking to Sports Monthly magazine, Ghai slammed almost every aspect of the way Cricket Kenya is run. He reserved his most bitter attacks for Inamdar, a man who did more than most to help oust him. “The chairman is too preoccupied with the happenings at ICC at the expense of local cricket,” Ghai said, “and who is paying for the travelling expenses.”Ghai also accuses the board of remaining in office illegally by not calling elections, a comment that one senior administrator under both regimes described as “the ultimate example of the pot calling the kettle black”.Elections, which are scheduled for next month, should have been held in June 2007 but have been constantly delayed by the failure of the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association to sort out their own constitution. “The same person who is in the chair presently was a strong advocate of amending the constitution to be in line with CK,” Ghai said. “[But] the goal posts have been shifted to give the team the excuse to remain in power illegally.”Ghai then attacked the failure of the board to ensure that money from Tusker, the main sponsor, was paid. “I have had dealings in the past with the sponsors and can state they are serious people who meet every commitment and obligation,” he said. “CK has been giving the excuse the delay has been caused by a change of guard, yet successor takes over what his predecessor left.”Kenyan cricket has been reduced to the lowest standard of competition,” he concluded. “Cricket in Kenya is now in the ICU and if emergency measures are not taken, it is going to die.”

Top Scottish club faces bleak future

News comes of the possible demise of one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious clubs, Perth CC, is set to wind up

Cricinfo staff14-Feb-2009While Scotland prepare to play in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers, news comes of the possible demise of one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious clubs. Perth CC, which boasts Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer among former players, is set to wind up.Founded in 1826, the club was at the forefront of Scottish cricket for many years, but according to a report in the Scotsman it has not got enough players to raise even one XI and its facilities have been repeatedly vandalized.”There is every chance we will go down the tubes, secretary and captain Graham Ferguson told the newspaper. “There’s no point in kidding ourselves we can continue on that basis.”This isn’t something that has happened overnight, but we have lost 11 or 12 of our first-team players to other clubs, our facilities are sub-standard, our membership doesn’t seem to want to get involved in the day-to-day running of the place and we are simply not functioning as a club, where there is any chance of keeping things going 10, 20 years from now.””We have looked at all the alternatives, and we are very sad to be in this position, but placing the club into abeyance, prior to the 2009 season, is firmly back on the agenda, and if the response isn’t there, we will have to wind things up.”

Journalist says West Ham have £25m to spend - Exclusive

Evening Standard journalist Jack Rosser has told Football FanCast that West Ham have just under £25m to spend in the remainder of the window.

The Hammers have been chasing Jesse Lingard all summer, although it’s looking increasingly likely that he’ll remain at Manchester United despite his expected lack of opportunities.

David Moyes has made just one addition in PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola on loan, although the east Londoners are on the verge of completing a £25m deal for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

West Ham desperately need another striker, with the red-hot Michail Antonio their only senior frontman at the club, but Moyes has been unable to add to his front-line.

Meanwhile, with Areola joining on loan and Zouma’s move not completed, the Hammers haven’t yet spent the £20.05m they banked for previous record-signing Sebastien Haller in January.

And whilst GSB would appear reluctant to dip into their pockets following clubs’ recent financial problems due to the pandemic, Rosser told FFC that there are funds available for Moyes:

“The money that they’ve got to spend isn’t huge, but there is money there. They’re not going to blow anyone out of the water, but they’ve got just under the same they’ve spent on Zouma to spend.”

Pyrah extends Yorkshire deal

Richard Pyrah, the Yorkshire allrounder, has a signed a contract extension with the club that will keep him at Headingley until the end of the 2010 season

Cricinfo staff30-Jan-2009Richard Pyrah, the Yorkshire allrounder, has a signed a contract extension with the club that will keep him at Headingley until the end of the 2010 season. While Pyrah wasn’t a regular in the Championship team he became a valuable member of the one-day side where his medium pace was an important asset, especially in the Twenty20 Cup.”I’m delighted with the deal. I think it is an exciting time for the club,” Pyrah said. “With the way things went for me last year I’m quite positive about playing in all competitions if I can start the season well.”Pyrah has recently returned from a three-and-a-half month spell in Wellington and is now preparing for pre-season with the Yorkshire squad, which this year will include the former England captain Michael Vaughan as he tries to win back his Test place.Yorkshire are also under a new captain in 2009 with Anthony McGrath having taken over from Darren Gough who retired at the end of last season.

Dilan Markanday: Spurs’ next Dele Alli?

The Nuno Santo era could not have got off to a more perfect start for Tottenham Hotspur.

They sit top of the Premier League standings heading into the first international break of the season and have made it through the qualification stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

After sacking Jose Mourinho in mid-April, chairman Daniel Levy was reportedly on the lookout for an attack-minded head coach – one that can develop the club’s young prospects at the same time.

It’s still early days but Spurs are the lowest scorers in the top ten, though they are yet to concede a single goal after three successive wins. Nuno has also given an opportunity to payers like Japhet Tangana and Oliver Skipp, so there is that balance that Levy was looking for, in some respect.

You could argue that the Portuguese is lacking the sort of creative presence that can elevate Spurs’ game even more and perhaps he can kill two birds with one stone by looking to one of their more promising youth products.

Once again, it’s Harry Kane that sits near the top of the creativity charts, despite being their striker and only starting one game. Only one other player has averaged more than one key pass per game, as per WhoScored.

Nuno has trusted Dele Alli to start in a more advanced role in midfield but he’s yet to provide a key chance and is still some way off his 2016/17 form that saw him register 18 goals and seven assists in just one season.

Spurs’ next Alli could be found in Dilan Markanday, who just last week scored a hat-trick for the U23 squad.

According to the club’s official website, the 20-year-old gem is a ‘clever attacking midfielder who normally plays on the right’ – in some ways, this is similar to the Englishman under Mauricio Pochettino.

Furthermore, Markanday has earned a comparison to former academy star Marcus Edwards.

“Markanday has looked bright today. Have always felt he has a very similar running and dribbling style to Marcus Edwards,” football.london’s Alasdair Gold said. He also praised him when Spurs’ U19s faced Inter Milan in 2018.

“Inter are struggling to deal with Dilan Markanday. His dribbling and passing ability is pulling their defence and midfield all over the place.”

Spurs have only scored three goals in their opening three games, so it’s this sort of presence that is required in the no.10 role. Nuno should consider unleashing the U23 sensation and in doing so, he may well discover the next Alli in north London.
